’180 canvases’, by designers marcella campa and stefano avesani of instant hutong, is a site specific installation which fills the arrow factory gallery in jianchang hutong, beijing — a former vegetable stand which now hosts exhibitions. playing with the original concept of the space — a store-front facing the main street — the addition of vibrantly colored panels in a three-dimensional formation catches the attention of passing-by viewers. graphics and found materials are integrated into a previously private, now exposed public space. the contrast of a bold wunderkammer featuring 180 hand-painted canvases juxtaposes the grey color of surrounding walls. the installation reminds viewers of the local tradition of chinese paper cutting as well as the ubiquitous hanging clothes lines which is referenced by the wire holding sheets in place.
