“this is different than the typical school dance though.” he pointed out with a shrug of his own. “i didn’t ask anyone. i’d much rather spend time with my friends that night. why do you want to bail on your prom date?”
“because he’s an asshole,” she shrugged. “but going with friends is smart... i might end up doing that, i feel like my mom would be pissed if i didn’t go at all.”

“i feel like as long as you’re kind and not rude about it, they shouldn’t get mad. but if they do, tell me and i’ll go tell someone else to yell at them.”
“do you think mom’ll be pissed if i don’t go at all? we already, like, got the dress n’stuff.”

“i guess.” elliot just shrugs. “why don’t you wanna go with him anymore?”
“we, uh... got into a moral disagreement.”

“wait, hol’ up. you gonna break up with y’mans right before prom?” she questioned, a little shocked. “i would say as soon as possible if you’re trynna go with someone else. if not, i dunno.”
“he’s not really, but... yeah?” she sighed and shook her head, “i’m not, no... i just, i don’t want to go with anyone, really. i probably won’t even go at all.”

“The whole reason he asked is probably because he wanted to go to prom with you as his date kiddo.” She gives a small smile of sympathy. “You could always let him down easy and go just as friends?”
“he couldn’t have wanted it that bad, he was pretty rude,” she sighed, “but yeah, that might work. if we go as friends i probbaly wouldn’t have to hang out with him the whole time, don’t y’think?”

“then i’ll do it for you. who the hell is it?” he raised an eyebrow, almost waiting for an answer so he could sort this out. “i don’t think it could ever be considered rude though. if you’re not comfortable with that person, then that’s that.”
“just a dumb guy, please don’t do anything,” she shook her head at her brother. “yeah, i hope. we just, like, got into a disagreement, y’know? and i don’t wanna waste hundreds of dollars on going to something i’m gonna be miserable at.”

“I’d say three weeks is cutting it pretty close. How come?”
“i, uh... i just,” she shrugged, “i don’t want to go anymore. we got into a disagreement, n’stuff.”

“Did he already buy you the corsage and rent his suit yet? Did you already say yes to him?”
“i don’t think so, no. but even if he did, he could probably find another date, right?” she bit her lip, “yeah, i said yes a few weeks ago, but... i changed my mind.”

“about a month and a half till prom, unless you were dating them and broke up. i don’t wanna tell you when you should do it. however, the month before prom is when people start scrambling for a date.”
“well, when would you do it?” she sighed softly, “i just don’t wanna be a bitch about it, you know?”

“never? you just tell them no and say ‘sorry, go fuck yourself.’ i have better things to do.”
“okay, see, i don’t think i could actually ever say that to someone’s face.” she shook her head a her brother, “but really, when is it considered, like, rude?”

“i don’t think there’s any time as too late. just..kinda rude if you drop it the night before.”
“okay, yeah, i wouldn’t do that,” she sighed. “i just, like, don’t wanan hurt his feelings, y’know?”

“it’s never too late. i don’t have a date… why devote my night to someone else when i want to have fun? just find a single person before the night ends…”
“i mean, i’m really just going for the pictures and stuff, i don’t even like school dances,” she shrugged. “you really don’t have a date though? why not?”

“i don’t think there really is a too late. if you don’t want to go, just tell them you don’t want to go. but do it nicely, you don’t want to hurt their feelings.”
“but what if they, like... might get mad about it?”
