Always ~ Mai x Female!Reader
Avatar the Last Airbender
You are Azula and Zuko’s cousin by the way.
Y/n rubbed her eyes, still half asleep. The only reason she had gotten up was the shouting going on somewhere nearby, and in all honesty Y/n wanted to be there if there was a fight.
“I am a peaceful person.” Someone said calmly, and Y/n grinned when she realized she recognised the voice as one of her closest friends, Mai. She continued heading towards the argument, and whoever Mai was arguing with took a deep breath after being silent for a while.
“You just threw a bowl at me!” The person cried as Y/n entered the room, recognising the other person as her brother.
“It was a peaceful compromise instead of the dagger I wanted to throw.” Mai replied.
Y/n walked over to Azula and Ty Lee, and sighed, “what did my brother do?” Ty Lee didn’t reply, being too focused on gazing at the scene in worry. Azula, however, sniggered.
“Mentioned a touchy subject. He seems to have figured something out.”
This confused Y/n, and she raised an eyebrow. Mai wasn’t one to throw things at people for something they’d said, unless it really pissed her off. “What d’you think it was?” Y/n asked Azula.
“Hmmm, I don’t know.” Y/n’s cousin smirked. “Maybe something about her love life.” Y/n’s heart sank, but she tried her hardest not to make it obvious. She had been pining over Mai for a long time now, and she didn’t even try to convince herself otherwise. She was certain that Azula had figured it out, which was probably why she was taking so much joy from telling Y/n what had happened. “So,” Y/n spoke, pretending that what Azula had said hadn’t bothered her. “Uh, how much time is this argument going to take?” Mai and B/n turned, and while Mai smiled slightly B/n scowled.
“Not a second longer.” He muttered, turning on his heel and walking off. Mai walked over to Azula, Ty Lee, and Y/n, the corner of Mai’s mouth twitched into a smile.
“For the record,” Y/n grinned, “I wish you used the knife.”
“I was tempted.” Mai admitted.
“What did he do, anyway?” Y/n asked, wanting to hear it from her. Mai simply blushed and averted her eyes. Well that’s a first. I’ve never seen her blush before… “Said something annoying?” Y/n asked when she still didn’t reply, trying to keep the mood light. Mai nodded. Azula smirked, and walked off, clearly assuming Ty Lee would follow and leave Mai and Y/n alone. Ty Lee didn’t take the hint, and began admiring a new tapestry hanging on the wall. Y/n sighed, walking towards the door that led to the courtyard with the fountain.
She sat on the edge of the fountain and let out a small sigh through pursed lips. Who? She wondered, if what Azula expected is true, - which it probably was - then who? Her mind wandered back to when she had asked Mai what B/n had done, and she remembered the blush covering her face when she asked. What had B/n said to make her react like that? Y/n kept pondering these questions, barely noticing someone sit down next to her.
“Hey.” Y/n replied, trying and failing to hide the downcast tone in her voice. Mai sighed, putting a hand on Y/n’s shoulder.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“Well that was convincing.” Mai’s voice was heavy with sarcasm, but she was smiling. Y/n let a small smile slip, and Mai repeated her previous question. “Seriously, what’s wrong?”
“It’s just…” Y/n paused, “what did B/n say?”
Mai was silent, and for a while, Y/n thought she wouldn’t answer. “... He… figured something out.”
“But what?” Y/n asked, and Mai paused, blushing again.
I’ve never seen her this flustered before. Y/n thought. Mai’s usually calm, unbothered, amazing, stunning- Okay, I’m getting off-topic.
“Azula told you.” Mai avoided the question.
“She told me what she thought happened.”
“She told you what happened.” Mai corrected. “She was there.”
“Wait,” Y/n asked. “My brother guessed who you like?”
Mai sighed, “yes.”
Y/n paused. The question was right on her tongue, but she couldn’t figure out whether she should ask it. After a while, she whispered, “who?”
Mai whispered something, but her voice was so quiet at that moment that Y/n couldn't hear it.
“Who?” Y/n asked again.
“You.”
Y/n’s heart seemed to stop beating when she said that. She couldn’t keep the hopeful grin off her face as she tentatively whispered, “Me?”, as if saying it would make it untrue.
Mai turned to her, a light blush on her cheeks. “Of course it’s you - it’s always been you.”
