If what you got from Nosferatu is that Eggers is anti romani then there is no hope for you. What they did in the movie is dance prove the local racists wrong protect the community from vampires and try to stop the protagonist from getting killed by taking his horse.

i think when working with a text as fundamentally racist as dracula expecting an adaptation to do slightly more than like at least i guess not implying the wildly otherized foreign characters are literally working for the evil vampire as his minions like im not sure you understand the words youre using or the historical tropes or how romani villagers engaging in strange arcane impossible to understand rituals seen only briefly from outsider perspectives isnt engaging in like all the same common racist tropes used to portray romani characters in horror stories let alone the insane orientalism of the count orlok well everything to accept the premise of dracula that we must stop the dangerous foreign invaders bringing disease to our shores is literally just racism and xenophobia lol

eggers reputation as a freak also feels extremely underserved because his stuff is so… idk. calculated and sterile. he lacks the earnestness of the freaks i appreciate

idk i thought the lighthouse was pretty fun and earnestly weird on its own tho idk exactly this real vs fake freaks thing who even knows unsure how to adjudicate such statements but i find his approach to sexuality especially weird he really does not understand idk the historic weight or history of the demon lover trope very well and engages so much with it and his use of supposed 'historical accuracy' is like... very strange to be so invested in crafting an historic environment when what hes actually creating are like myths and stories and legends makes the chasm between story and presentation feel more extreme and then also weirdly over planned due to his style both stiff unmoving camera (which again i think works in the lighthouse cuz its historic engagement is also just as much with old film so its you know more outside the bounds of reality and is stylistically engaging with its own medium playfully) and like very over done production design...

you know i may be sad nobody will ever make a good carmilla movie but at least its niche enough ill also never have to sit thru a nosferatu 2024 or frankenstein 2025 treatment of the story either so you know i can sleep well at night

its so funny how i went from the lighthouse was a fun movie to watching the vvitch and nosferatu back to back like a year or so later and becoming the number one robert eggers hater

you know it drives me insane robert eggers is so well respected for his "historical accuracy" when his historical moves in nosferatu and the vvitch were literally just like what if the horribly bigoted belief systems these characters had were just like objectively true... like nosferatu fully recreating and frankly enhancing the anti romani racism of dracula and adding even new elements alongside the entirely unexamined implicit antisemitism and the vvitch was like what if the devil is real and the malleus maleficarum was just correct about witches are frankly the most uninteresting and regressive takes on historical belief and practice and kind of undermine any real goal one could have from this recreating history to entirely merge violent and bigoted myth with reality which feels like it kind of undermines the actual horror of the people these myths are perpetuated against and like what to actually do with all that but whatever

#historical accuracy is not real and can never be achieved but what are you using it for
