i remember the wonder balls and i think i’m going to have to agree. i was always just wanting to get into them so i could see what was inside. of course, the chocolate was an added bonus after but i was more excited for the other stuff.

Right? The fun shaped candies inside were adorable. But the flavors of the fruity candies conflicted with the cheap chocolate, I was not a fan of that. So you’re a candy person, huh? What kind of candy is your favorite?

Aubree felt like she was being held in by two thin pieces of fabric as well as hopes and prayers. The hopes held her tits in while the prayers made sure her pants didn’t split every move she made. Clearly, mistakes had been made but she knew she looked good. As long as she got laid tonight then all would be worth it. At least, she hoped. Well, that was until ten seconds ago when a man approached her with the worst pick up line ever. In fact, it had sent her straight to the bar for a drink to wash the memory away. “Someone honestly asked me if I wanted to look in his pants for a treat?” She told the nearest person beside her. “Let’s do a round of shots… Maybe two.”

Raleigh whipped out his classic Marshmello getup for the party. He usually wore this to Halloween raves and putting the outfit to use made him feel a little bit like his old self again. He’d taken some pictures with random people who thought his costume was cool before making his way to the bar and was about to order when a scantily clad Tomb Raider stepped up beside him. “Oh wow, how creative,” Raleigh laughed from inside his helmet. “Shots? I’ll take you up on it if it’s tequila.”

The nickname made her pause, head tilting to the side as if that alone would help her identify the person that obviously knew her. “Holy shit— Raleigh? I haven’t seen you since— wow, that makes me feel old just thinking that far back,” she laughed. Her eyes rolled when he commented on her festive pajamas bottoms of choice. “What can I say? I’m in the holiday spirit,” she said with a smile. “I’d invite you in to catch up, but I currently have a bird flying around my living room acting like he pays rent.” Her nose scrunched up at the thought of how many things the wild animal had touched, or worse, shit on.

Raleigh wrinkled his nose when she mentioned feeling old because he tried not to think about the time he spent in Tupelo back then, he didn’t find it particularly pleasant or memorable. “Oh you should definitely invite me in, otherwise how else will I be able to help you chase out your unwanted tenant?” Raleigh stepped closer to her, rubbing her back softly since she seemed chilly, or maybe that was just an excuse he used to touch her. Back when they were in high school he never would have dreamed of being so forward with her but now he’d grown a lot since then and might just shoot his shot.

Greer shopping at the farmer’s market was pretty unusual. She really hadn’t ever been all that involved in the shopping to begin with, but she was doing a hell of a lot more errands for the house since she’d left the gas station. Watching the scene unfold before her made the dark-haired woman burst out in a laugh, her hand flying up to cover her mouth quickly. “I saw it, yeah,” she replied, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “Honestly, though, you were close. I’ll give you props for that.”  

Raleigh smiled sheepishly when he heard someone laughing at him and rubbed the back of his neck a little, leaning back in his chair. “I mean you could have at least said no to make me feel better...” He did a double take at the vaguely familiar face and suddenly, “Oh shit what’s up G? Haven’t seen you down at the gas station lately, you good?” Raleigh slipped into a different argot when he was speaking to somewhat familiar people, losing the customer service sound to his voice; he’d dropped by the gas station buying cigarettes at all odd hours and often enough to be on somewhat familiar terms with Greer.

Joey didn’t partake in many of the cheesy, Hallmark-y town functions, but the weekend farmers market had become a staple of her Saturday morning. She looked a bit out of place dressed in all black and covered in tattoos and piercings. Especially when standing next to pastel sweater wearing grandmother’s and tennis skirt clad house wives. The brunette roamed the makeshift aisles created by the booths of vegetables, homemade crafts, and organic honey. She had a canvas tote bag hanging from her shoulder with the loot from her Saturday morning venture when she started to walk past the last booth on the right. It was like the world started moving in slow motion as the apple dropping and the guy flailed helpless trying to stop it. Joey couldn’t stop the laugh that left her lips. “Do I get a discount if I say I saw nothing?”

Raleigh smirked at the familiar sight of the bartender from Bob & Ringo’s. He vaguely remembered often flirting with her and just as often getting shut down but that didn’t stop her from piquing his interest. “I don’t know about a discount but could I maybe sweeten the deal with a kiss?” he asked with a smirk, leaning forward on the table a little to get a better look at her. “So this is just what you always dress like, huh Jo? Everyone looks good in black but you do it even better, you know that?”

Adrienne was a little bit tipsy because she’d had maybe one glass too much. “Do you not live here?” She asked the male as if him not knowing was the most ridiculous thing she’d ever heard. Was she not the only person that was new? Why would people choose to come here to stay? It baffled her. “Uber,” she nodded her head and groaned. “I’m gonna have to pay overnight charges for my car. This is most definitely karma at work.”

“Nah fam I don’t - uh - no ma’am, I don’t really live here,” Raleigh told her as he wrinkled his nose and shook his head a little. “Well I mean I do now but not for long. And I’ve never been dumb enough to park in the no parking zone so that sounds like a you problem.” Raleigh sighed softly, feeling the slightest twinge of an urge to help this person somehow. He was always taking care of people at music festivals, it’s just what you do. “Can I help you with something else? Want me to like - stick around til your ride gets here or something?”

lottie liked fresh produce. in fact, she preferred it and every time she noticed a stand with someone selling some, she had to stop. it was just something she’d always done. so, when she saw him setting up, she pulled over and moved out of her car slowly, her growing belly almost getting in the way of things but she’d gone through this all before so it wasn’t a big deal to her. she walked over to him and watched as he dropped the able, an amused smile taking over her face and she lifted her shoulders up in a shrug. “everyone should know to rinse their produce off before eating it anyways. what all are you selling?” she asked, stepping closer to his products. 

Pregnant women were a category of people that you just didn’t mess with, even as a joke, even Raleigh knew that much. So he straightened up in his seat a little and softly laughed “Yeah, of course, thanks for being chill” when she mentioned washing produce and then cleared his throat at her question before answering her. “A lot of our fall produce is coming in now, this is um...” he trailed off, pausing to read the list of squash his grandfather had him type into his phone as he pointed at each one “This is delicata squash, spaghetti squash, and acorn squash. Once the apples really start coming they just won’t stop but in a few weeks we’ll have some beautiful colorful Swiss chard too.” He reached under the table to pat a cardboard box softly as well. “And I’ve got some of my grandma’s homemade fig preserves from all our summer figs in here, makes a great addition to any holiday cheeseboard you might have to put together.”

“Stop being a dick,” Augie whined and slumped against the counter at Bean there. The café was one of his favorite spots in town, he always dropped by in the morning to grab a cup of coffee in the morning before work. When Raleigh moved back into town and starting working as a barista there, he found himself visiting more often. He spent so much time there that the man to be arrested for loitering, if there were possible. The Forensic scientist would tell you he’s only there to enjoy coffee and work but the real reason is to annoy Raleigh. Plus, he liked to challenge the older man to see what type of latte art he could do. Augie would come in every day with a new pick up line to throw at him, today it was ‘been thinking about you a latte.’  

When knowing that his friend had returned to Tupelo, something inside him stirred. They grew up as childhood friends but something had changed and blossomed along the way. Raleigh was the first man he ever messed around with when questioning his sexuality. You could say that there had been possible feelings but that was all bittersweet after Raleigh left. 

“Is it a crime that I just want to come and see my best friend,” Augie said, making sure to exaggerate on the ‘best.’ It was a good thing that business seemed to be thin at this hour. “I’m also hear to ask if you want to come over and marathon all the Halloween movies. I’ll even hold your hand for all the scary parts,” he teased.

When Raleigh first came back, there were things he either hated for staying the same all this time or there were things he was relieved to find had not changed at all. Augie didn’t fit into either category, partially because he never expected to see him again. Raleigh liked to act like he was so done with Tupelo and everything and everyone in it. His familiar friendship with Augie was so easy to fall back into but of course things were different now. They weren’t the same awkward gangly teenage boys fooling around, they had new lives and responsibilities of their own - responsibilities that they still shirked for some of their usual banter and mischief and fooling around. Augie definitely made life back in Tupelo a little more tolerable even though Raleigh would never admit as much.

“I’m not a dick, I’m just trying to work and you’re being distracting,” Raleigh laughed softly as he carefully used a bamboo skewer to put the finishing touches on a spiderweb latte before pushing the drink toward Augie on the counter with a self congratulatory  “Nice. Dude, check it.” He leaned against the counter and rolled his eyes a little at Augie’s emphasis on best but he smirked at him and shrugged at his movie marathon offer. “I don’t know, are we gonna watch actual scary movies or are we watching Scooby Doo or some shit?” he asked, feigning disinterest - of course he would come over, any chance he could get out of his grandparents house he would take it.

Raleigh laid out the last of the tomatoes and cucumbers and dusted his hands off on his jeans with a soft sigh, looking over the small folding table filled with mostly apples and assorted winter squash now. He grabbed his lawn chair from the back of the truck and sat down, staring at the seasonal produce and rubbing his eyes because he couldn’t believe how much time had passed already. He was just pulling out his phone when one of the apples rolled off the table and he scrambled to grab it before it fell but his fingers were just short of catching it. He huffed out a soft “shit, fuck” as it hit the rocky ground, inevitably bruising the small apple. He picked it up and rubbed it on his shirt a bit before carefully placing it back with the bunch and that was when he noticed someone standing by the table. “Oh god did you just see that? It’s - it’s still good, ok, I promise,” he said with a sheepish laugh.

Audrey hadn’t meant to stare intently but she couldn’t help it, neither could she stop herself from shaking her head as she watched the other. She was about to break her own record of keeping her mouth shut and not meddle in other people’s buisness, let them be happy, but then she sighed and spoke up. “You’re doing it wrong.” She stated.

Raleigh could not give a rat’s ass about whether the steel cut oats came from the bulk bins or from the boxes on the store shelves but his grandparents insisted the bulk bins were more bang for your buck so here he was, struggling to figure out which way to turn the knobs to release the oats. In his defense he had almost never shopped for this sort of thing in his past almost 3 decades of being alive. He furrowed his brow when he heard someone comment and turned to look for the sound of the voice before scoffing, “Ok well I don’t tell you how to live your life, do I?”

She sat on the steps of her colonial style childhood home in cartoon pumpkin covered shorts and an oversized sweater that she was using more like a blanket. Misty, her darling, grey furred child, was busy batting at the windows from the bench on the wrap around front porch. When Matty spotted someone walking by, she dashed down the steps, waving her hand to get their attention. “Hey, hi, how’s it going? Do you know how to get a bird out for a house without killing it?” she asked, arms wrapping around herself in an attempt to block out the early morning chill. “My cat wants to kill it, but that just seems like it’d be a lot of feathers to clean up.”

Raleigh hated how friendly everyone was in this town sometimes. He just wanted to go about his day without everyone wanting to know everyone else’s business. He continued his light jog right past the person who waved hoping the sight of his headphones in his ears would give him the excuse of not hearing anything they said. The sight of the somewhat familiar face made him backtrack and take his headphones out, pretending to squint at them a little as a smirk formed on his lips as he caught his breath a bit. “Tilde? It is you, isn’t it, Tilde? Sorry can you say that again? Didn’t catch that. Nice pajamas, by the way.”

“No, no, no!” Adrienne said as she ran out of the building in time to see her car being towed out of the parking place she’d taken up. “Oh shit,”  The brunette hadn’t even seen the non-parking sign until her car was no longer sitting in front of it. Waving down a nearby passerby, she dashed towards them rapidly. “Hey, hey! Where do they take the towed cars at in town? Please don’t tell me its the next town over because I’m this close to bursting out in tears.” Her finger and forefinger extended slightly.

Raleigh huffed out a sigh and pulled his headphones out when someone started running towards him rapidly. He grimaced a little when she said she was close to bursting out in tears; whether she was sarcastic or not he wasn’t good with handling this sort of thing. “Ok well um... I won’t tell you, because I don’t actually know. So please don’t cry,” he said with a soft laugh. “Are you in a rush to be anywhere? Maybe call an Uber and figure out your car towing later?”

Raleigh’s parents were drug addicts deemed unfit to raise him so he was taken from them and raised by his maternal grandparents in Tupelo

Raleigh  left Tupelo as soon as he was 18 but didn’t go to college like his grandparents thought; He took the money they saved up for him to go to school and bought a car so he could follow/work/party at food trucks / music festivals / theme parks / events all over the nation

Raleigh had plans to work music festivals abroad but got word that his grandparents were in poor health so he’s returned to Tupelo to care for them and was welcomed back like the prodigal son

Raleigh left Tupelo because he felt stifled by his grandparents but is now conflicted after feeling what it’s like to have a place to call home again and finding a new appreciation for things in his grandparents’ life like the greenhouse and garden and fruit trees on their property and even the chicken coop and beehives in the back yard

Raleigh is a notorious EDM hoe and plays music in his car / in his headphones very loudly every chance he gets because he really misses his concerts / festivals and there aren’t many in the area
