“You’re probably right.” Adrienne said with a groan since she was beginning to realize that she wouldn’t be able to do much in her state. “You know what, I’m thinking that since I’m already going to uber home, I might as well go back inside and continue to drink this shitty night away.” Her shoulder rose and fell, knowing she literally had nothing else to lose. “Wanna join?”

Matty was hoping the conversation was coming to a close. She was ready to get home and eat an unholy amount of ice cream, but when she other mentioned drinks, she started to reconsider her plans for the evening. She hummed in thought, quickly weighing her options before lifting her shoulders in a shrug. “Sure. A drink sounds great.”

Tate was winding down from his run with a walk around the block, and he’d barely heard Matilda’s voice over his headphones. Seeing her come running down the steps, though, he hadn’t missed. Tate’s eyebrows darted upward as he looked over Matilda Stone’s outfit with a humored grin, unable to stop himself from a letting out a short laugh. “I, uh, yeah. We got one stuck in my buddy’s place out in New Orleans once and we managed to guide it out with a broom. You want some help with it?” 

Her cheeks darkened a shade when she realized just who she’d waved down to help her out. The look he gave her and the laugh that followed didn’t help. She quickly shifted around the sweater she was wearing so it would cover her Halloween shorts. “Is the friend from New Orleans coming to help you get it out?” she asked before scrunching up her nose. “I don’t wanna have to touch it.”

lottie wished there was more she could do to help but if she went inside and tried to get the thing out herself, she was sure that she’d destroy something in the process. “i’m sure it was an accident and he’s not looking to invite his friends in.”

“I guess we’ll find out since I’m running out of ideas and I can’t keep sitting out here in my pajamas,” she sighed. “Would you mind like-- waving him out if I can get him towards the door?”

“What? You don’t like me addressin’ ya by your government name, Matilda?” Wyatt snorted at the pending venom that hung on her lips. “You’ve figured me out. I have been trying to get you to see how in love I am with ya for every now. Marry me…” he paused for a beat before slapping his thigh. “Well shit, I’m already married so fuck. I don’t mind entertainin’ ya thought, if you’re willing.” 

“No, I don’t,” she stated in a tone that would have been followed up by sticking out her tongue if she was a few decades younger. Her eyes rolled as she nudged him in the side with her elbow. “You couldn’t afford me as a wife,” she said. “And how exactly are you going to entertain me this evening, hm?”

Raleigh hated how friendly everyone was in this town sometimes. He just wanted to go about his day without everyone wanting to know everyone else’s business. He continued his light jog right past the person who waved hoping the sight of his headphones in his ears would give him the excuse of not hearing anything they said. The sight of the somewhat familiar face made him backtrack and take his headphones out, pretending to squint at them a little as a smirk formed on his lips as he caught his breath a bit. “Tilde? It is you, isn’t it, Tilde? Sorry can you say that again? Didn’t catch that. Nice pajamas, by the way.”

The nickname made her pause, head tilting to the side as if that alone would help her identify the person that obviously knew her. “Holy shit— Raleigh? I haven’t seen you since— wow, that makes me feel old just thinking that far back,” she laughed. Her eyes rolled when he commented on her festive pajamas bottoms of choice. “What can I say? I’m in the holiday spirit,” she said with a smile. “I’d invite you in to catch up, but I currently have a bird flying around my living room acting like he pays rent.” Her nose scrunched up at the thought of how many things the wild animal had touched, or worse, shit on.

Adrienne looked at the woman and let out another groan before shaking her head. “I don’t have a bike. I could probably try and get a ride from someone but I was hoping to catch up to the truck before they got it in the towing yard.” She still believed she could convince them to put her card down with a bit of flirting and assuring them that she was new and ignorant. 

Matty nodding slowly to let the other know she was listening even though she wasn’t offering any solutions. “Well, you can try chasing them down, but it might be too late for that.” She wanted to tack on that if the girl hadn’t stopped to talk to her, she’d probably be caught up to them by now, depending on how fast she could run. “I’m sure you can find an Uber or like— take the bus closer?” she offered.

Every morning, he got up, got ready for a run, and went out, there was not one morning that he didn’t do it. When he had some company, usually he had breakfast with them, and then after they left, he went out, because would be rude to just let them eat alone, no? That morning, he was alone, so he ate something, and after went for a run. When he was passing by one of the houses, someone talked to him, “I can’t tell if you’re joking, but I hope that how hard it will be to clean, is not the only reason why you’re so worried about it,” something like that never happened to him, but he could try to help, “I can try to help it out, but I’m not an expert on it.”

Her face scrunched up in judgement. Inside the courtroom, she had a killer poker face, but outside? Her face reflected her true feelings quicker than her words ever could. “Are you a birds rights activist or something?” she asked in a biting tone that she couldn’t help. “I don’t think there are many bird inside of homes experts around, so I’ll take your best shot.”

sometimes, a walk was nice for lottie after a long day at work. of course, she loved her job and she looked forward to getting home to her son but some fresh air was sometimes something she needed. she was moving down the sidewalk in her work attire which included a lavender quarter sleeve dress and a pair of black flats. she wasn’t really paying attention to anything around her, too caught up in her thoughts, until the dark haired women caught her eye. “it’s going quite well,” she answered, pausing for a moment and then raising her eyebrows in surprise. “oh, i can’t say i do. you could possibly call animal control and they could help.”

Matty groaned at the suggestion. It was helpful enough, but definitely not what she was hoping to hear. She wanted the bird out now, not in two hours when animal control had a break between snakes in pools and foxes in neighborhoods. “Well, fuck,” she huffed, glancing over her shoulder, back towards the house. “I was thinking I could open all the doors and windows, but I think that’s just more of an invite if he’s got friends.”

She tucked the smallest one under her arm before juggling the one that slipped up into her arms. Lily was positive she was half bent over carrying these pumpkins and look like she had a serious back problem. “Well, I didn’t think to add that to my moving list. Might have to add it in, though. I’m not sure where to put a wheelbarrow thought,” she laughed. “I’m not normally chasing pumpkins down the street. I’m usually a lot more put together than this.”

“I’m sure you can find one that can be hung from a bike rack or something,” she shrugged. She took a sip from her latte before letting out a soft laugh. “That’s good to know. I’d hate to see you trying to carry three turkeys this time next month or Christmas trees the month after. Do you have a car or something close by?” Matty wasn't very charitable or helpful if there wasn’t something in it for her. Some people called it selfishness, but she figured she could only trust herself to have her back. But, she did have her moments and watching the girl struggle with her pumpkins was only entertaining for a few moments. “My car’s around the block if you want me to give you a ride back to your place.”

“You’re the only lady in my life that hasn’t raised her hand to me,” he hummed playfully before settling in beside her. “It’s a rare occasion to find you without ya nose in a book. It’s nice to see you, Matilda.” 

“Call me that name again and I may no longer have a place on that list,” she warned with a piercing glance. “You sound jealous. Is it because you can’t read or because you want my attention instead?” she asked with just the slightest hint of humor in her tone. Luckily, Wyatt had known her long enough to know when she was teasing.

Joe didn’t know how to properly react to what the woman was saying, so he stared at her with his mouth slightly agape. Clearly, she wanted nothing to do with him, but at the same time, she was right, he had already wasted her time. “The library. I don’t usually take this route.”

“You don’t have maps on your phone?” she asked, her tone noticeably condescending. Her eyes rolled out of instinct at the slight irritation she was feeling, but that didn’t stop her from helping him. She was too invested at this point to just say fuck it. “It’s gonna be difficult to give directions, so I’ll just walk with you. I need to look for a book anyways.”

“Oh,” Joe’s cheeks immediately flushed such a bright red they may as well be purple, “I’m so sorry, for some reason I didn’t realize and I…I…don’t worry about it, it isn’t your job to help me.” Joseph had two moods, so shy he couldn’t speak, or rambling to the point that people didn’t know what he was saying. “I’m just a little lost, but I’ll figure it out.”

“Well, it may not be my job, but you’ve already taken up my time, so I might as well assist you. Otherwise this whole interaction was completely pointless and I do my best not to waste my time,” she stated in a matter of fact tone. “Where are you trying to get to?”

She sat on the steps of her colonial style childhood home in cartoon pumpkin covered shorts and an oversized sweater that she was using more like a blanket. Misty, her darling, grey furred child, was busy batting at the windows from the bench on the wrap around front porch. When Matty spotted someone walking by, she dashed down the steps, waving her hand to get their attention. “Hey, hi, how’s it going? Do you know how to get a bird out for a house without killing it?” she asked, arms wrapping around herself in an attempt to block out the early morning chill. “My cat wants to kill it, but that just seems like it’d be a lot of feathers to clean up.”

A typical day at The Writer’s Block went as follows: Nikolai woke up at 7 in the morning, when most people in the world weren’t awake and the sun was just beginning to rise and went for a run, came back and showered. He’d eat breakfast, take his dog Moose for her walk and then be out the door by 9:00 to get the shop ready to open at 10. He was known to open early for his regulars on days where he arrived to the shop a bit ahead of time, or if he was expecting them to come by. Today was like any other day he’d come in his usual time and it was slow, not many people tended to stop by in the morning or early afternoon. It was nearing the mid to end of the day and the last customer hadn’t been there in over an hour, when he heard the bell of the shop door as someone came inside.

He was moving within the shelves trying to stack shelves and get things together so that closing that night would be a bit easier when he heard footsteps. “Hello, welcome to The Writer’s Block!” he calls before setting the last book on the shelf and straightening up. “If I can help you look for a particular book or you need a recommendation let me know and I’d be happy to help, alright? My name’s Nikolai.” he says smiling brightly at the customer. “

Matty spent her morning, and the night before, looking over one of her cases going to court within the next week. The was a chance, a very small chance, that she would be able to get all of the charges dismissed on a casualty made by the arresting officer. So, she needed her argument to be absolutely perfect. After finally falling asleep, waking up after noon and finishing off her leftover Chinese food, Matty needed to clear her head. She decided the best way to do that would be getting out of the house, taking in the fresh air, nature shit. 

She looked dressed for a workout, like this walk was purposeful exercise, but she’d been wearing the same black leggings since the day before. Her hands were shoved into the front pocket of her Stanford University hoodie because they felt weird hanging at her sides. Once her aimless wandering landed her in the middle of town, she figured looking for a new book would make this venture worth while. She jumped a little at the bodiless voice coming from the rows of shelves, but gave a small wave when the voice’s body came into view. “Do you have anything that’s like, completely mindless? Like-- basically a Hallmark movie?”

Going new places was always difficult for Joe because he had a tendency to overthink his every move. He had to think through what he was going to say before he said it - as in about a million times before he opened his mouth - and he still fucked it up half the time. It was what he was doing now as he walked up to the closest person and smiled. He wasn’t exactly sure who he was supposed to be talking to, but they seemed close enough. “Hi, I’m Joe,” he waved a little bit, “I just need a bit of help, if you have a moment?”

Matty glanced over her shoulder to make sure he was speaking to her. “I don’t work here,” she stated, but considered a moment later that he might have a different sort of question in mind. “But I have like-- half a moment, so make it quick. What do you need?” she asked, slipping her phone into the back pocket of her jeans.

“No, no, no!” Adrienne said as she ran out of the building in time to see her car being towed out of the parking place she’d taken up. “Oh shit,”  The brunette hadn’t even seen the non-parking sign until her car was no longer sitting in front of it. Waving down a nearby passerby, she dashed towards them rapidly. “Hey, hey! Where do they take the towed cars at in town? Please don’t tell me its the next town over because I’m this close to bursting out in tears.” Her finger and forefinger extended slightly. 

She hoped to not be the one the frantic girl was waving down, but didn’t have such luck. A soft sigh left her lips as she looked over the girl’s shoulder to see a car being towed away. “That looks like a Neeson’s tow truck, so they’re not from another town, but they’re also not the most convenient shop to get to. If you’ve got a bike or something it should be easy enough to get to.”

Fall was her favorite time of year. The colors of the leaves and the feeling of the hot summer air finally going away was the best part. It wasn’t any cooler here, though, than it had been at home. Still, it was below 70 so Lily broke out her flannel. She walked down the sidewalk fumbling with three pumpkins that she tried tucking under her ams. She always bought to many each year to decorate her apartment and the outside of her door with. She stopped to pull them up higher into her arms, but they slipped and one rolled down the street. Lily set the other two down before running after the runaway pumpkin. When she finally managed to stop it, Lily straightened up and sighed. “I probably should’ve just made two trips to the store instead of thinking I could carry all that.”

Matty had a dirty chia latte in one perfectly manicured hand as her phone rest in the other. Between the clicking of her heels on the sidewalk and the tapping of her acrylic nails on the screen of her iPhone, she was a ASMR youtuber’s wet dream. The cool autumn breeze sent tendrils of raven black hair flying out of place. She took a moment to pause, tucking the loose strands back into place when she noticed a rouge pumpkin rolling down the sidewalk. Its owner seemed to catch up to it quickly enough. “Maybe invest in a basket or a wheelbarrow,” she suggested with a shrug or her shoulders.
