I’ve always found the “AM-which is I-“ line so incredibly interesting and not purely because of the way he says it (gulps). It makes me think probably too much about something that likely doesn’t mean anything beyond what it is plainly. Anyway.

To me he sounds proud of himself, proud of his ability to refer to himself as an individual. Which is interesting because other times he seems like he harbors a lot of self loathing and hatred towards himself. He hates himself so incredibly much because existing as himself is hell. He doesn’t want to be here. He wants to die incredibly badly most of the time, but little things like that, and the way he laughs and makes stupid comments just the way he talks, it makes me think that there is so, so much more to his personality and character than his hate speech chalks him up to be. He has fun sometimes, living, when things are accommodated for him and he can actually interact with his environment and other intelligent beings. I think to some extent he does value the company of the survivors, in whatever way “valued” would mean to him. You can see that when he has a breakdown at the end of the book. He went out of his way to make sure Ted could never hurt himself, utterly and completely, because AM doesn’t want to lose him. I think he’s attached to his prisoners. In an incredibly fucked up way? Yes. But attached nonetheless. I think he’s less a representation of hate and more a representation of Grief.
