AYO NON LATIN/HISPANIC WRITERS AND ARTISTS LISTEN UP! ESCÚCHAME PORFA!

A few weeks back I posted about 2 particular characters that I headcanon as being of Latin descent.

While I found a little bit of support the response I got most was spins on “why would you do that? they’re canonically black. They’re canonically born here (in Japan, seeing as it was anime characters specifically). You are taking away representation from others who are black/asian etc.”

And I’m gonna be honest, I cried. Bc this touches on a feeling of validation and insecurities I’ve been through my whole life.

One, I’m black. I can’t steal away my own representation.

But let me give you some insight as to why that really, really hurts.

I didn’t change anything about those characters.

Here’s a bit of education:

HISPANIC AND LATINO AREN’T RACES, THEY ARE ETHNICITIES!!!

if you really don’t understand the different I’ll explain it to you at some point- or you can be responsible and use GOOGLE, because I am not obligated to your self-education.

Now first the difference in terminology. Latino (or latinx which is a term I have problems with but that’s for another day) refers to an ethnicity of varied races and backgrounds that come from LATIN AMERICA - the parts of the American continents that were colonized by the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal).

That’s every country from the parts of USA down to Chile and the Caribbean Islands of Cuba, Aruba, Puerto Rico, and The Dominican Republic. This INCLUDES BRAZIL but does not include SPAIN, PORTUGAL OR THE AFRICAN COUNTRIES THEY COLONIZED.

Hispanic refers to ethnicies in countries with Spanish as the official spoken language - THIS INCLUDES SPAIN (Europe) AND EQUATORIAL GUINEA (Africa). It does NOT include BRAZIL where the spoken language is Portuguese. 

Neither of these are races or nationalities because they refer to multiple different nations and multiple different races.

You can be any race and identify as a Latino and or Hispanic. Calling a character from an Asian country or that identifies as black, does not disclosed the idea that they can be Latino or Hispanic.

Remember that there were more African slaves in the Latin Caribbean and Brazil then there were anywhere else bar none. There is more Asian immigration to Latin America than there is anywhere else. There is more ethnic diversity in Latin America than there is anywhere else, especially the US and Brazil. 

So why do I “steal representation” from other races when they “clearly aren’t latino”

Maybe it’s because Latinos look like this:

You don’t own what I view as blackness, what I view as Latinidad and what I view as representation for either of those. I am not here to have MY fictional reflection of identity questioned especially when it comes to characters of several skin tones that I like and want to explore the possible background of.

If you claim to want to be open to representation of BIPOC voices maybe understand what constitutes those voices first🖕🏾

so I’ve been reading @liltodo and @yamagucci just talk about the idiocy of making (y/n) - a character meant to represent a large group of people - either have an overly described appearance or just be super duper white (which brings on a lot of issues of cultural misappropriation - cultural appropriation is a highly misused term that everyone including minorities gets wrong bc they mix it up with cultural misappropriation btw - for another post blah blah blah).

I just got a question for y’all writers

barring the fact that you should

1. just specify a reader’s ethnicity

2. make a goddamn OC since you’re so stuck on one appearance or

3. try to make the reader as ambiguous as possible

if you are so set on defaulting to the stupid idea of not diversifying your reader insert character and having them just default to your anime setting...

why are they white and not Japanese?

No really why? Why have them described as so stereotypically white or misappropriating AAVE/AAUV when no anime characters would do that. In anime “Japanese” can look a lot of ways.
