the way people talk about amber heard in online spaces terrifies me to my core like the whole rhetoric of ’well she could dish it out as much as he gave her’ feels eerily similar to how people used to talk about nicole brown and oj simpson’s abusive relationship and i promise i am not making this reference lightly it’s just because i’ve been listening to a detailed documentary podcast series about the oj case and the way the public tends to not take seriously less than perfect female victims in domestic abuse cases has not changed since the fucking eighties. this isn’t a fiction or a meme for your consumption this is something that kills women

also i need to add to this how absolutely vital likable celebrity status is to both of these cases… people don’t want to imagine their favorite famous man being a terrible human being so they tend to make excuses for their behavior. most of metoo was easy to digest because the men accused weren’t likable (weinstein, etc). in real life too if a man puts on a lovable and likable enough front in public this applies. charm is inherent to many men who get away with abuse

The level of delusion from Depp’s fans is heartbreakingly terrible. She’s not a saint, but that shouldn’t matter at all. He has a history of violence and clearly abused her. I find them both very unlikable. But she doesn’t deserve the treatment she’s receiving. At all.
