I don’t like the feeling I get when I look at Mel; it makes me realise that I’m not as cold-hearted as I’d like to be. As we lay here, right now, I can’t help but slip my fingers through hers. They’re small and thin, but also cold and rigid; which, in a way, makes me want to kiss her even more. I press our hands against her fragile chest, and whisper sweet nothings into her ear.
She doesn’t even twitch.
A few autumn leaves blow through the bars in our tiny window, and I bury my face into her river of curly red hair. Not even the howl of wicked laughter nextdoor is awaking her from this sleep. I unlace our fingers as gently as I can, and proceed to sweep the leaves off of our concrete floor. I glance up at Mel, but she remained still.
Seconds lead to minutes, and minutes turn to hours, but Mel still lays in the same spot. I spent the whole day lying next to her, waiting for her to wake up, but she never did. And I know she never will.
When the guards come to take her away, I stick my hand out the window and catch raindrops in my palm, wondering why none of my cellmates ever last the night.
I want a girlfriend who is down for staying up until weird hours of the night and sit in the kitchen with me at 3 AM with soft music playing in the background and we drink some tea. We’ll be sitting on the floor, looking out the window because if you pay close attention, the world is so damn beautiful in the middle of the night. It’ll be even prettier with a girl that I love by my side. And hopefully it’ll be prettier for her with me next to her. Hopefully she’ll love me just as much as I love her.

2. She can’t understand why anyone else wouldn’t. It’s so fun after all.
Taken at face value, she’s written off in the audience’s mind as an ordinary airhead. Her excitement and lack of subtlety is par for course as the genki girl trope that is so familiar in anime and manga. Veteran manga readers are used to seeing the ever-positive protagonist totally obsessed with a sport and to an extent, those people really do exist. But Yuzuko takes that passion to the extreme, the reality is that her enthusiasm for hurting people is not natural.
Yuzuko loves everything about MMA. The fighting, the push-ups, the sit-ups, the sparring, the hitting, the grappling, the pain of getting hit, the cleaning of a cut, the victory and the defeat. Yuzuko loves everything there is to love about MMA.
To some this sounds romantic, devoting oneself so completely to something is usually regarded as inspiring. Of course, that’s part of what makes Yuzuko so creepy. Most people and even professional fighters don’t find it fun being hurt over and over again. There are times when MMA can be incredibly rewarding and satisfying and likewise there are times where MMA can be a painful humiliating experience. For Yuzuko however, even something like getting mounted and pounded is “fun” and when someone says otherwise, she simply doesn’t understand.
Why wouldn’t you want to face off against someone way stronger than you and get demolished? Why wouldn’t you want to get crushed after training till you puked? Why wouldn’t you like hurting people and getting hurt?
If Yuzuko was capable of doubt, she’d probably ask why she was different from everyone else, but frankly she isn’t. In her mind, she’s the normal one and everyone else is weird.
In other words, Yuzuko is completely incapable of feeling empathy.
That is no exaggeration either. She literally has no understanding for the feelings of others. Yuzuko always end up telling her defeated opponents how much fun it was to effortlessly choke them unconscious. Imagine training and sparring for months all for the purpose of winning and then when the big day comes, your opponent defeats you easily and afterwards tells you how fun it was.
If you can feel the humiliation and irritation at having months of your hard work and determination reduced to a game of “fun” then congratulations, you are not Mawatari Yuzuko - you are capable of feeling empathy.
Yuzuko can’t even understand other people’s pain. For her, getting beat up is all part of the fun, so she takes it for granted that everyone else is okay with it too. After all, if they’re in the ring with Yuzuko then that must mean they love MMA like she does, so they should be able to enjoy a broken arm as well as Yuzuko would.
So now that it’s clear that Yuzuko is not just creepy, but very creepy. Where does she go to from here? As twisted as Natsuo is, she at least understands that her personality is bad and that she hurts people. After all the first step to recovery is acceptance, but Yuzuko doesn’t seem likely to ever understand that much.
My personal prediction is that it’s going to get bad for Yuzuko. Very bad.
