Welcome to Randomtale! This AU was created by putting every major character in Undertale into a randomizer wheel, and randomly assigning them roles in the story. Think Underswap, but more bizarre.

The role changes are as follows:

Napstablook, in the roll of: Alphys

Alphys, in the role of: Papyrus

Sans, in the role of: Asriel

Papyrus, in the role of: Chara

Asriel, in the role of: Undyne

Undyne, in the role of: Napstablook

Mettaton, in the role of: Gaster

Gaster, in the role of: Mettaton

Asgore, in the role of: Temmie

Temmie, in the role of: Frisk

Frisk, in the role of: Burgerpants

Flowey, in the role of: Toriel

Toriel, in the role of: Flowey

Chara, in the role of: Sans

Burgerpants, in the role of: Asgore

IMPORTANT: For the purposes of this AU, Flowey has no affiliation with Asriel at all. As Asriel is still alive, Flowey is unambiguously an entirely different person, a flower monster’s who personality takes inspiration from the original Flowey.

The original concept for Gori Village (product of the Asgore-Temmie swap) was a village full of a whole species of Asgore clones. It was my least favorite part of the AU by far. It was extremely eerie…

Not sure the modern result is much less creepy, given it’s just a traumatized Asgore roleplaying as different people because he’s lonely, but I sure do like it better.

This was scary.

Mindfulness Day

Thursdays, I take a minute to think about what I love about my AU, and today I chose my love of character design. I love designing a special look for the cast of my AU, and lately have been hard at work workshopping the designs of Asriel (sorry for missing Tuesday’s posting schedule. Whoopsie!)

Progress Report 3

Behind the scenes I have been working a lot on characterization. I’ve been charting out what traits from the original universe are present, and what traits have been inherited from the role they swapped into. This benefits the balance of the character and prevents instances where original character traits are entirely lost.

Asriel Dreemur piece, inspired by the Spotify banner art for “Demons” by NIVIRO.

I’ve always thought the song Demons fit Undertale really well. The concept of demons being the angels of their own world really made me think about how monsters are noble within their own species, but considered evil by humans. It especially comes to mind with characters like Undyne (or Asriel in Randomtale, which is why I chose him,) who would do terrible things to humans in order to save their own kind.

WIP Concept Art for Burgurking’s palace.

I can’t use the flower garden motif without stealing it from Asgore, so I came up with BK’s own original one. The palace has a diner built into it, where monsters can come to eat and talk with the king.

I have begun to work on the smaller secondary swaps. Mainly battle NPCs.

Feeling Like Garbage

The underlab had become enveloped in the odd, spacey qualities of Napstablook's creation. Once, they'd thought the stars to be a part of their imagination. Evidently, it was not so. The hallway had become distorted, nigh unnavigable. Had it not been for their ghostly intangibility, they had doubts they would still be able to move around the place It was a nightmare. The creatures that lurked below didn't seem to mind, though. Lurking amongst the derelict dead ends melted out of existence by abstract illusion.

Randomtale Alphys has trypophobia… consequently, she’s afraid of Echoflowers.

What I love about working on Randomtale is the challenge of fitting these characters into categories they may seem entirely incompatible with.

I mean, come on. How is Alphys meant to fit the role meant for the cheery and outgoing Papyrus?

It forces you to get creative with how you handle characters. TS!Underswap became a big inspiration for me when I saw how they took creative twists to mix both the new aspects of character AND the old.

I like the feeling of doing that too. Coming up with new scenarios and stories to support to new framework is incredibly fun.

AU Progress Report #1

Asriel’s design is still a work-in-progress. Hard to design boss-monsters, in my opinion. I’ve finally picked reference creatures to inspire them.

Asriel on the other hand is extra difficult, because he never made it to adulthood in canon. So designing him as an adult becomes an extra challenge.

This piece represents Asriel’s guilt for the death of his mother, Toriel. She died after he made a mistake in the recipe of the pie he made for her, inserting buttercups and poisoning her.

Based on the song Monster Made of Memories by Citizen Soldier, a very important song for Asriel's character.
