The concept of Lan Qiren being so aro/ace that he just completely skipped out on his family's Obsessive Love Fixation thing is just hilarious to me.

Man's just watching everyone else in his family spiral over some seemingly random person they've lost their minds about and he simply cannot relate. He definitely thinks it's some kind of curse and that he's personally managed to escape it through like, mindfulness or something? Keeps telling his nephews to meditate and be rational and follow the rules because he thinks attraction is some fake thing that poets invented.

Nie Huaisang is such a character. He can faint on command. The character guide in the novel describes him as a dandy and lists his weapons as saber (ostensibly) and crying (actually). He stalked a canary for several days and then sneaked it into class. He collects porn and shares it with his friends. He's in a sword wizard society and his clan in particular is known for their blades but he never once has a fight scene. His characteristic accessory is a paper fan. He failed summer camp twice. He formed a Golden Core nearly a decade later than everyone else his age. When his brother was killed he set in motion a several years long revenge scheme that involved both careful planning and insane improv. He built a reputation on not knowing anything. He threw himself on his brother's killer weeping and saying "if you don't help me I'm killing myself in front or you." Truly who is doing it like him

like they're both definitely not overbearing or Strict parents and wei wuxian is still very much a Cool Fun Dad but lan wangjis parenting philosophy is "I grew up repressed and restricted and sheltered so I will make sure I do not give my child the same fate" while wei wuxians parenting philosophy is "I did whatever I wanted when I was younger and I DIED (died a yuan, Died)" which to me is Infinitely more entertaining than wei wuxian convincing his son to get drunk with him and lan wangji scolding them about it

we get little sneak peaks of this before he's even an adult.. HOW can you see wei wuxian be all "I'm not telling you how we're going to get your core back until you've finished your meal >:|" to jiang cheng and then think this man would be the one letting sizhui do whatever he wants

and this is not only funny because wei wuxians parenting style is so different from lan wangjis and the way he Himself acted as a teenager, we also must think about the fact that him and jiang cheng have almost the Exact same Parent Instincts and this terrifies them deeply. wei wuxian is a much more.... tender and traditionally affectionate and less,, shouty parent of course but oh the sheer comedic power of the fact that wei wuxians, "do you see that pit? no matter how old you become I will still plant you into that pit! understand?" and jiang chengs, "you think I can't grab you now? even when you're 30 years old, I will still grab you!" are, essentially, the same sentiment and I can Promise you that at least one (1) time both of them have shouted the exact same thing at their respective children at the exact same time and then turned to look at each other in utter horror

Wei Wuxian repeatedly insists that Jiang Cheng is competitive and that is why he couldn't handle the knowledge of the core transfer. But to me the true awfulness for Jiang Cheng is that he always wanted to be acknowledged for his own hard work and effort. With the core transfer, the credit for all of Jiang Cheng's accomplishments will always be ascribed to Wei Wuxian, either by Jiang Cheng himself or observers (Wen Ning, Lan Wangji). This is something Wei Wuxian -- either consciously or subconsciously -- understands. Wei Wuxian can't face Jiang Cheng knowing that Wei Wuxian put him into this situation and I also believe that he would handle Lan Wangji and Wen Ning's biased judgement of Jiang Cheng well, at least in this regard. Wei Wuxian doesn't share their view, he has that line in the text about how telling anyone about the transfer would be like demanding he also contributed to Yunmeng Jiang when he didn't put in the work after Sunshot.
