Need Help With Food

i need to write a post about valkyrans as they exist in my mind. maybe tomorrow when i'm sitting around.

well it wasn't tomorrow but it is today.

blosc is such a fun playground for making shit up. in today's sandbox i have constructed 99% unisexual alien species. valkyrans reproduce with one another as same-sex organisms. they don't perceive themselves as being any particular sex or gender, because their biology doesn't lend itself to that, but of course from a human perspective they're all-female (as in the show).

you would only get sexual variation and 'male' valkyrans via cross-breeding with species that have male sexual features. all non-valkyran sexual expression comes from the non-valkyran parent. i personally love the take that zurg is valkyran; or, rather, half-valkyran. i don't think zurg ever mentions male family members, just his mother and grandmother. i don't believe valkyran crossbreeds are sexually compatible with other valkyrans, either, so you'll never see a 3/4ths valkyran child.

in terms of culture, given they're obviously a nod to vikings, i'd say they're a people who focus mostly on colonising new planets. i'm slightly defensive of actual norse history, but blosc is genre fiction to the extreme, so i can cope with valkyrans being based off tropes rather than truth. as such, they're more into pillaging than establishing homes on-planet and stick mostly to space. something like planet z would be exceptionally fucking weird to them, but zurg gets points for literally everything else he does, so it's fine in his mother's book if he wants to have a planet-sized base from which to launch attacks on other planets. he's doing amazing.

that said, i don't think zurg has much contact with other valkyrans, and since he only ever mentions his family in the past tense, i believe his grandmother has passed away, and possibly his mother too. there's no reason for him to ring up strangers because 1) they have no real incentive to pair up for reproductive or social purposes, and 2) even if they wanted to socialise, zurg is zurg and he isn't going to fit in as part of a crew. he's too egotistical to be cooperative as anything less than a captain, and lacks the social standing in valkyran culture to just waltz onto a ship and declare himself leader. so he'll stick with his grubs and his machines and his schemes. it's the environment he's happiest in.
