Spiritual Practice through Performance January 14th, 6pm‬ Curated by Rasu Jilani and Jojo Abot A public conversation with @jojoabot Abo, @adesolaosakalumi and @rasupreme exploring the subtle lines between spiritual exploration and performance. Many performers offer us personal experiences of drifting through a myriad of consciousness - conjuring the surreal, imaginary, ethereal, ancestral and theoretical - all in one act. When a performance is grounded in a particular spiritual practice or cultural expression it has the ability to contextualize the material that gives it a generative value that can resonate beyond the moment, with the understanding that some acts are intentional and others spontaneous. This is an accepted phenomenon amongst many African traditional practices, but what happens when these practices begin to show up in contemporary performance modalities? Curated by Rasu Jilani, this panel will seek to explore these ideas with the public at Jojo’s “Power to the God Within” a pop-up installation at “On Canal”. . Adesola Osakalumi is an award-winning actor, choreographer, singer, and dancer whose talents have garnered him successes in film, television, and on Broadway. He is perhaps best recognized as a lead in the National Tour of the Broadway hit musical FELA!, which won three Tony Awards in 2010. Choreographic credits include the films School of Rock and Marci X; for the stage, Centrifugal Force at Lincoln Center’s Out of Doors; Eyewitness Blues for New York Theatre Workshop; Mister at the NY Fringe Festival and New York Theatre Workshop; and Hip Hop Wonderland. . JOJO ABOT is a Ghanaian artist expressing herself through music, film/photography, literature and performance art. FYFYA WOTO (New Birth – New Discovery) serves as the theme and title for her ongoing project exploring SELF as a provocative tool in the discovery, exchange and evolution of the subject of IDENTITY in relation to appropriation vs. appreciation in a growing global conversation around shared space and shared identities. I am honored to have been invited to join a list of bright minds to speak on a panel and lead a Think Tank during #afrotectopia at @nyu :: Decolonizing Blackness, Securing Black Futures Think Tank :: Facilitated by Rasu Jilani :: In the era of #wokeness, Black Lives Matter, and Black pride, oftentimes the notions of blackness can fall into the trappings of being defined in contrast to whiteness. The drawback with this framework is that freedom becomes an elusive ideal when tethered to the white-gaze. This Think Tank is intended to be a meeting of the minds in order to share ideas, theories, experiences, practices of self-awareness and decolonization. Participants will collectively tackle complex topics concerning black futures.

A Meditation for the Solar Eclipse: The things I came up on speaks of the exposing of the darkness and amplification of negative energy. In that moment it would be great to pray on what you'd like to bring into fruition and light. Meditate on you and what you'd like to bring to light that operates in darkness (such as biases and hate). Do this with care and mindfulness of remaining constructive and looking to shift things in yourself. The cast of darkness amplifies negative energy. Stay away from negative thoughts as they may be inherently amplified. Certain sources say as much as 1000xs. Set positive intentions. Everything in life is a result of the spectrum of light and dark. Think about the difference between photosynthesis (things/organism that generate through light) vs Chemosynthesis (things/organisms that produces through the absence of sunlight). The key thing to walk away with here is that it's the veil being lifted. There is no hiding. The wicked and weak will be revealed within self and will be manifested without! This is a time to go IN and work on self! In many Native American traditions they see The full solar eclipse speaks of rebirth and renewal as it's seen as the sun dying and being reborn! Meditate on rebirth! For context Trump is a Leo rising which speaks of how he shows up socially and his leadership-style during this time of revelation. Arrogance, Patriarchy-dominant, Hyper-masculinity and intolerance aka the unhealthy ego. But let's not get it twisted, trump is a distraction away from self - he represents to me the collective EGO. See how these traits are manifested in you and how to identify and undo them for the greater you. (at Planet Earth)
