@rat-hunters
Parallels
Rescue Mission
It’s short but here’s a fic of the Rat Hunters, most of which is written by the lovely @polandspringz you should read her Rat Hunters stuff if you want a better picture. Only Rattul and Salkar belong to me. Poland belongs to @polandspringz. Sals belongs to @salsie Ratdito belongs to @probably-chase and Lab belongs to @labradoodleduck check them all out, they’re awesome! Feel free to send asks about Rattul if you wish.
All of the Hunters were different. Sals was a big bear, never seen without Poland by her side. Ratdito was eccentric, but charmingly so. Their leader, Lab, was an enigma, but they all trusted him.
Then came Rattul, the newest member of the Hunters. She was the wife of the Rat King they all hated so much, yet she hated him just as much as they did. Through Salkar, she had explained that her exposure to the Rat King had turned her into the squid-human hybrid she was. Salkar had also explained that Rattul had an aversion to calling the Rat King by his name and that she was now rendered unable to speak in coherent English due to the mutation.
Noises that did come from Rattul’s mouth were typically limited to laughter, grunts and hums. Occasionally there would be a ‘woomy’ or a ‘victory!’ Most of the talking was done by Salkar, which Lab would then have to relay to the rest of them. Though Rattul would come armed with a pen and paper, and she could say words - they were just hard to understand if she spoke too fast.
Her first mission was an uneasy one. She knew the others were wary of her, she felt exactly the same. After all, she was the wife of the King, and they were the enemies of said King. Hell, Rattul was responsible for the guards that guarded Poland and Lab. Under the same reasoning, she was also responsible for telling them both escape routes and guard changes so they could get out easier than before.
Rattul sat with Salkar on her shoulder, goggles pulled down over her face. Despite being five feet from the nearest Hunter, she could feel the distrust rolling off of them in waves. The Inkling rolled her eyes, a warbled sigh coming from her.
It was a simple mission: go in, rescue some refugees, get out. Easy enough. They all watched Lab, waiting for his signal. Poland sat on Sals’ back, low to the bears back. Everyone else crouched down, covered only by the dark shadows of night.
Then, came the signal from Lab, telling them all to go. They were off like rockets, all to do their assigned jobs with varying degrees of grace. Rattul climbed in through the window, turning into a squid as she went. Landing neatly on the floor, she pulled the Flingza Roller off her back, hoisting it up, ready to use.
“This way.” Poland and Sals had entered now, ready to lead everyone out.
Poland slid off Sals’ back, gesturing for the refugees. When some turned to Rattul, she simply gestured towards Poland and Sals, a gentle smile on her face. Refugees could be difficult, especially when children were amongst them. This time, they seemed to be easy, all following Poland to where Ratdito waited outside.
Rattul gripped her roller, surveying the area. Her concentration failed when a weight hit her legs. Jumping, she looked down to see a child. It was a human child, no more than 5 years old.
“Are you gonna help us?” The child asked, voice filled with the innocence only a child could hold.
Rattul placed the roller on her back, bending down to pick up the child.
“Yes.”
The child giggled, a bright smile on her face. “Your voice is funny!”
Rattul smiled at the girl, showing off her beak shaped teeth. “Yes it is.”
Making her way towards the refugees, Rattul hoisted the child into a more comfortable position. After fifteen minutes, the refugees were all safe, ready to return home.
Rattul placed the child on the ground, giving her a final hug before watching her run off to her parents.
“I didn’t think you were a kid-person.” Lab sounded amused.
Rattul shrugged, shoving her hands in her pockets. “Woomy.”

Prompt: Who hurt you?
I decided to write from the perspective of Rat King Cora for this one! This is going to be part 1 of a 3 for a series examining Rattul’s character arc and her relationship with Cora. Enjoy!

Fun fact: the Rat Hunters started out as a meme in a Discord server. Now we out here crying about it. Truly, you are skilled, Pol.

So, in the rat-verse, can normal rats speak? Also, how'd they gain such a level of sentience? -Trixx, cause u wanted asks.
The only human the normal rats/our rat companions can communicate with or speak to is Lab because he is full of rats and comprehends their language. The rat can, however, understand our language and pass it along to one another, and can communicate somewhat with the non-human/mutated/cursed members of our party, like Sals and Rattul.
As for the sentience, we are assuming they always had it to some degree but never understood power structures or felt they had any reason to take over. Once the mutation happened and they could form hive mind like systems, they began to attack and take control, but not all rats wanted that life. The rats have knowledge of good and evil, and our rat companions and other normal rats know that oppressing another group is no bueno, but Ratmilian and the others don’t care.
Anyways is there a rat in the rat hunters
I’m assuming you are asking if someone is selling us out? I don’t think we have any traitors (yet) but for the OG trio (Vince, Lab, Poland) I think Ratdito Chase is the one they trust the least because if telling our plans to the Rat King causes more chaos, then he will certainly do so. However, we don’t have anyone yet who has completely dark ulterior motives.
“I- I can’t see! I can’t see anything!” With rat hunters?
Fun fact: I had a dream that inspired the plot of this, and the prompt just happened to work for it. Also, I didn’t beta this at all so I pray that it doesn’t have any really bad typos.
“We are sure to get discovered like this-!”
I was shoved forward abruptly, and my eyes snapped open, shocked by the sudden golden light that filled them. A polished white marble floor, heavy roman columns stretching up to the high dome shaped ceiling, I could see figures dancing between them, their bodies oversaturated in light but their movement just flashing by. One large chandelier extended down from the heaven that was the plaster ceiling above us, painted with angels and men alike. Music wafted throughout the room, harmonizing with the chit-chat and the clink of glasses and dishes.

is the rat with the crown Ratchente?
I don’t know which crown you are referring to. Ratchente is Vince’s rat, and to my knowledge he does not have a crown. Rat King Cora most certainly has a crown. My rat, Ratchard the 3rd, wears a small crown and royal cape, even though he is hardly nobility. As for Emperor Ratmilian…. only Lab has seen him in person…..
5 for the hunters
Ice was forming around him, crystallizing and making the hair on his arms stand up, his body had started shivering about an hour ago and now five minutes ago it had developed into full on shakes, violent and jolting. His metal head lolled back against the wall to the side of the metal barred door. The dungeon was cold. It had been for almost a month, actually, but in this instance it seemed colder than usual, and Lab almost laughed that the guards must be freezing to death outside his cell too, but he held it back, not because the metal joints of his jaw had frozen shut.
It was because he wasn’t an idiot.
