growing up i've started realizing that when you care about people with your whole heart and move through life trying to be kind and thoughtful, you are going to be taken for granted. not necessarily because people are cruel or malicious. not because they don't love you. sometimes not even because they've done anything wrong. you're just not at the front of their mind
you make the plans that allow everyone else to see each other. you remember the important dates. you bring flowers when something big happens. you make sure the person who might otherwise be forgotten is included. you notice the little things and quietly take care of them because that's just how you love people. and then eventually you realize that not everyone is loving you in the same language
you can see it across different friendships and different groups. even different periods of your life. you start noticing the pattern of how easily you can make space for other people while somehow there isn't always a space being made for you
and I don't think the answer is to become less kind. I don't want to become someone who stops bringing the flowers just because nobody thought to bring me any
I'm just finally understanding that being thoughtful doesn't mean you'll be thought of and that's the part that actually hurts
yeah you know what, I don't want to be the person who stops bringing the flowers. but it is hard it's hard watching friends reach out to each other. it's hard being excluded from things, not because anyone intentionally left you out but because you simply were not thought of. and it's hard telling someone you're sick and realizing they never thought to ask if you're okay or even what's wrong but I'm proud of myself for the person I am despite all of that. I'm proud to be the kind of person who remembers the little things. someone mentions something they need or want and I tuck that info in for later. I bring the flowers to big events because everyone deserves to feel special. I make plans and rearrange things so other people can see each other even when it was something I originally wanted to do for myself. because seeing the people I care about happy genuinely makes me happy and I don't ever want to stop being that person, if I did that would feel like abandoning part of who I am. but I also don't want to keep putting myself last. I cant keep giving so much of myself away and then sitting around hoping someone remembers to give something back for once I'm going to put myself first and watch me flourish. I have big plans for myself and truly I'm fucking tired of letting other people make me feel small

revenge!! AJ for @reuvenfaygele
i love artfight. i love the concept. i love seeing everyoneâs styles. its great!! but every year iâm reminded how much it feels like itâs built around digital art first, with traditional art kind of awkwardly following behind. donât get me wrong, i know there are traditional categories. i just donât think itâs as thought out compared to the digital categories
- why are digital painting and traditional painting in the same category? they have completely different tools, limitations and processes
- size is based on how much of the character is visible. ok.. but what if I paint that character on a ten foot canvas?? or sculpt them at life size??physical scale and time investment donât factor in at all (let alone cost of materials). the polish button is great but it doesnât account for that
- digital mediums get specialized qualifiers (if thatâs the right word to describe it), while traditional crafts are largely lumped together. animation has extra options. 3D modeling has qualifiers for rigging, textures and more. meanwhile ceramics/wood carving/fiber arts/glasswork/metalwork/mixed media, (i could go on forever) and so many other physical âcraftsâ are essentially just âcraftsâ and donât have these extra things to get points. iâm not asking for six million categories, but a little more nuance would go a long way
- some traditional mediums require waiting as part of the process. oil paintings need drying time between layers. ceramics need drying and multiple kiln firings. those hours (or days) are part of making the artwork even if youâre not actively holding a brush the whole time. this naturally limits how much you can create during artfight. iâm someone who primarily paints in oils (when iâm not sculpting) and i often have to wait long periods of time between layers before i can continue. by the end of the countdown, i may only have a couple of finished attacks despite spending the entire month painting. it feels like the current system unintentionally favors mediums that can be completed more quickly rather than recognizing the total time invested in a piece
- many traditional mediums have very little room for error. for example a ceramic piece falling apart when firing (which happened to me last year) means completely starting over. every medium has its own challenges but the current system doesnât really capture those differences
i know making a scoring system that works for everyone is hard and Iâm not asking for every niche medium to get its own checkbox. i just think traditional artists deserve qualifiers that represent the work theyâre putting in a little more accurately
iâm planning to reach out to the artfight team with some suggestions for expanding the traditional art categories. partly bc Iâd love to feel a little less like Iâm filing my work under âclose enoughâ but mostly because i think it would encourage more traditional artists to participate. idk whatever I just want to have fun and gift art but it does make me disheartened sometimes
