Adrei coughs, droplets of blood tainting the soil of the training grounds. On shaking arms, she tries to pull herself on her feet, but before she can do so a hit to her side makes her collapse again, wheezing.

"Your enemy won't wait for you to recover, child," the steely voice of her mother accompanies the pain. By now, hours into the eight session of the week, Adrei's ironclad strength is leaving her. She has not been able to sleep for a couple of days because of the soreness of her burning limbs, and she is exhausted and spent.

Her mother hits her again. Adrei coughs droplets of saliva mixed with blood. "I... know," she rasps out, willing her body to endure. On trembling hands she swallows the pain and crawls upwards, the same icy eyes meeting her mother's.

A decade later, Adrei is the one looking down at her youngest sibling. They pant, clearly exhausted. Adrei waits. More than her mother would have. But her sibling doesn't raise, and as Adrei grows impatient, about to infer another blow, her sibling looks right at her.

There is fear in their gaze. Uncertainty, pain, and something that cries out to their eldest sister for help. Mercy.

Adrei takes a breath, then kneels and puts a hand firmly on their face, rough but oddly affectionate.

"... you always have to get up when you fall. If you don't, they will tear you apart."

Her sibling sniffles, but eventually they get up. Adrei is proud to see a spark of defiant resolve in them too.

"Let's continue."
