I believe that Pierce is pretty reckless. He's been able to manage his impulsivity as he's gotten older and become more diligent, but when he was an adolescent, he was basically suicidal, especially in the army. Moving into my little headcanon...

I know the military is strict with mental health n shit, and this most likely isn't possible in some ways, but this is fictional, and I can do whatever. Pierce was definitely still struggling with it during his time in the army, getting into quite a bit of trouble frequently and still self-harming, but managing to hide it from his peers. So I feel that, leading up to the point where he lost his lower forearm (which I believe was from a grenade explosion, shrapnel messing him up so badly that it had to be amputated), he was beyond out of control, heedless during missions and such. He was even threatened with discharge once, but after nearly 6 years of active duty, that happened, and he was medically discharged instead.
