what really touched me was gigi sharing a screenshot of the last great american dynasty and writing “so happy that she wrote a song for one of the stories I always ask to hear again” — taylor choosing to tell us a story that seems to be one she tells her family & friends during hangouts & gatherings makes me feel all warm on the inside. these stories in their entirety may not be completely hers, but they are a piece of her & are personal to her. always & forever grateful for when she lets us in like an old friend

“And you poke that bear till her claws come out and you find something to wrap your noose around” keeps hitting me…..like the universal female experience of having a man purposefully rile you up/say something they know will offend you or push your buttons all in an attempt to justify their perception of you as crazy or over-emotional. Growing up hyperaware of this tactic and finding yourself suppressing your (valid) emotions in certain situations cause you know they’ll just use it against you (“she should be mad, should be scathing like me, but no one likes a mad woman”). Sigh……………

taylor’s control of language always sends me into oblivion when i hear some of her songs. there’s this super sexy thing in linguistics called topicalization where you put the a phrase at the beginning of the sentence instead of its canonical position further right in the sentence to emphasise the an action or feeling over the thing. it appears in cruel summer when she says “it’s new, the shape of your body / it’s blue, the feeling i got” and again in invisible string when she says “bold was the waitress on our three year trip / cold was the steel of my axe to grind / gold was the colour of the leaves / hell was the journey but it brought me heaven” however she usually uses this for emotions instead of actions. she doesnt want to emphasise what happened, but how it feels. she creates such sensory in her songs but not of a sound or a sight but an emotion and thats neat
