also me: 100% relieved that Bucky is making friends and having a life outside of Steve because having Steve be the center of his entire world is ALSO bad
Here’s your first look at ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ #D23
((Just as an FYI, I’m going to be going inactive on here--I haven’t had much muse for most of my Marvel muses, and Infinity War hasn’t helped in that respect. Maybe Infinity War Part II will help with something, but I’ll be sure to let everyone know when my muse comes back.))
“Most of the intelligence communities doesn’t believe he exist, the ones who do call him the Winter Soldier. He is credited with over two dozens assassinations in the last 50 years.” “So he’s a g h o s t s t o r y.”
CONCEPT: Steve and Bucky play Cuphead together. Steve spends equal parts enamored with the art style and how much it reminds him of old cartoons and enraged at how much he dies. Bucky at one point goes all hyper-focused and responds to beating bosses with a relieved sigh and a quiet “fuckin’ finally.”

“ .. Little bit.” Steve answered with a shrug, deciding that the truth was probably better than telling a lie that was sure to stretch his best friend’s nerves even further. “The serum’ll have it healed up in a couple of hours, and I’ve had worse.”
That probably didn’t make it any better, especially when he knew Bucky was already well aware of that; he’d had to pull Steve out of more than enough fights back in the day, after all.
“Yeah, I know you have.” He did remember that--seeing her smacked black and blue because she was too stubborn to back down. It was why he respected her--why they were friends--but it was also the reason he was going to die early.
Well, it would’ve been the reason he’d die early, if HYDRA hadn’t fucked up his life span.
“Do you need patching up?”
“Steve?…”

“Shut up.”
“Shut up.” Stevie mocks her brother in a baby voice, earning her a shove to her shoulder as they round the corner.
“I don’t sound like that- Buck, tell her I don’t sound like that.” Steve looks from his twin to their best friend, hoping for some back up.
Stevie grins, moving to stand next to Bucky. “He thinks you sound like that too, because you do.”
Bucky glanced up from his notebook, his face a blank mask hiding the longsuffering sigh he was suppressing. “Hey, you know something I remembered recently?” he said. “I’m pretty sure I said I was going to stay out of your shit when we were all twelve.”
They may have been older, but the gist of what he was saying still applied.
“Glad to see you two haven’t changed, though.”

The blond let out a long suffering sigh. “I wouldn’t have done it if I’d had another choice- but it’s not like jumping off a building could kill me anyway, not since the serum.”
Steve was aware that was probably not an argument that was going to work on Bucky, but he did feel like his friend was overreacting.
“Look, Buck, people needed help- what was I supposed to do? waste time running down forty flights of stairs, and maybe let people die, or take a chance and jump?”
“You haven’t figured out how to efficiently go down forty flights of stairs without jumping?”
Despite the bite of his words, Bucky did sound a bit resigned. He couldn’t argue the point entirely, but that didn’t make him any happier about what had happened.
“Does it hurt?” he asked, trying to change the subject.

In his defence, it really wasn’t; he hadn’t jumped that far, and even if he had gotten hurt, it would’ve been nothing the serum couldn’t fix.
“-I’ve jumped further than that before, and I’m fine, aren’t I? You can calm down now.”
“Steve, I haven’t been calm since the War and you’re the reason why half the time.” That was harsh, but he wasn’t exactly feeling charitable. “Fucking hell, are you trying to die? I didn’t drag your ass out of the river for you to go and jump off a building.”

Getting her memories back had come with a lot of different emotions; pain, grief, happiness, and surprise; but none of them had surprised her as much as the realization that she had a twin brother.
Or that they’d worked together for Hydra.
Memories of James had come back in odd bits and pieces; a remembered birthday party when they were eight, a teacher calling out Barnes in class and both of them looking up, an all consuming fear when James had fallen from that train, and the certainty that she had to follow him. She’d either find him, or die with him; or so she’d thought.
Of all the things Hydra had taken from her, the knowledge of her twin hurt the most.
“ .. Ma never told us who was older, did she?”
“No.” After a pause, he added, “I was gonna just keep saying I was the older one until someone corrected me, but I think that’s an asshole move.”
Bucky tried to smile, but it didn’t show in his eyes.
It was still a lot to take in. He was trying to adjust, and some things had come back to him. Come back might not have been the word for it. He still did things without remembering why, shit like walking on Steve’s “good” side even though he could hear just fine, and some of the muscle memory of standing near her, laughing at the same time, somehow sensing her moods--all of that was coming back.
But the memories hadn’t. Not all of them. He didn’t bring it up, because it made him feel like a piece of shit. But she was going to figure it out soon. He was surprised she hadn’t already brought it up.
“Steve might know.”

“Yeah-” The blonde agreed, throwing another betrayed glare at the remnants of the attempted dinner “-maybe not Nat though, she’d never let me live this down.”
She grabbed her phone from the counter and found the number for the surprisingly decent take out place she’d found a while back. “This place does pretty good pizza, and they’re used to my big orders.” They never seemed to be fazed by her super soldier apatite. “What do you want on yours?”
What did I like on my pizza before?
He didn’t remember.
“Whatever you’re getting.” Bucky hoped she didn’t read into his hesitation--or if she did, that she wouldn’t make a bit deal out of things. He couldn’t remember so many things that it had almost stopped bothering him. Small things didn’t bother him so much, anyway. He couldn’t let them bother him if he wanted to keep functioning.

Stevie eyed her disastrous attempt at cooking as though the food had betrayed her by not doing what it was told.
“Maybe we should order pizza or somethin’- I don’t think this looks edible.” It looked more like a failed science experiment than food now. “Or I could call Nat, see if she’ll take pity on us and cook?”
“...do I want to know?”
Bucky wasn’t too shocked. He didn’t think Steve had been allowed in the kitchen too much back before (not that he remembered, anyway), and he just assumed someone else had done the cooking for the Avengers. “I’d say I could try something, but I know how to make box pasta and...that’s about it. Maybe we should call someone.”
It was so strange that you could just order food like that now. He still wasn’t used to it.
