DO NOT put me in a room with marc spector. One of us is getting out pregnant!
rereading the hunger games series for the umpteenth time and one thing i always lament them omitting from or changing for the movies was those little details that show you just how fucked up the capital is. things like making the mutts look like the dead tributes, to the point where you wonder if they used actual pieces of them. things like them making those same mutts slowly munch on cato, dragging out his death for hours just for the sake of drama. it took so long for him to die that katniss actually feels bad and shoots him out of mercy.
This is so accurate and I totally agree with you! I love the movies, I think they did a good job, but the depth and feeling you get from the books are sooo different.
Besides the ones you mentioned (and Finnick mentioned in the comments), something that puts me off a little is the way they portrayed Katniss, Gale, and Peeta's love triangle(?), it was kinda 'superficial'; when in the books this has a lot more meaning. Not something actually romantic, but mostly about survival? Not only for The Hunger Games but for Katniss' life after the games. Peeta is the peace she needs, and Gale is the hatred and will to fight against the Capitol. That being the reason why it was so hard for her to decide who to be with.
It's just *chef kiss*
Also, the ending hits so differently, even though technically is the same as in the books. In the movies, it kinda feels like "a happy ending", while in the books you can feel the pain everyone is experiencing. How the trauma followed them over the years even after the war was over. Prim's death impact, all the burden Katniss had to carry taking a toll on her, Gale's guilt, Haymitch staying as an alcoholic his whole life to cope...
It just shocks me the empty feeling that stays with me for weeks after finishing the books (in a good way, it's hard to explain).
