rudigilbert:
Rudi shook his head lightly as Ravenna spoke of Warren not deserving his loyalty. Perhaps towards the end of his apprenticeship, but he had made his peace. Many of his memories were fond. Warren was a parent when both of his were afraid and at a loss for how to help him harness his powers. Despite the man’s misgivings he was a present force for the most crucial years of his life. “Loyalty is not always earned. I gave it to him, you see. He was the only one like me, and for that I loved him as a child loves a parent. Although, I do agree. Warren would not have survived the immortality ritual, he was not suited to eternity. It would have broke him.”
He paused in the middle of his rambling at Ravenna’s question. A light laugh escaped him in a burst. Paddington puffed on his shoulder, miffed at the outburst. With a tilt of his head Rudi quickly ceased his laugh. “I believe with powers like mine that you must possess a touch of madness to choose immortality. Your honesty to my question has merely convinced me that it was not my madness coloring my judgment of things”
In all her years, Ravenna has not once met someone with Rudi’s extraordinary gift. Talking to ghosts, it seemed, was a rare power and it was no surprise that this man practically attached himself to someone sharing many similarities to him. “You clung to him as every child should, Rudi. Your own parents did not understand yours powers and so it was easy to hand over loyalty. I do not doubt what you say for I have met others who wanted to become immortal and I refused because they lacked what we have.”
Rav cocked her eyebrow at the agitated bird perched on the man’s shoulder and tried hiding the smile threatening to grace her lips. “Rowan constantly reminds me that we are all mad in some shape or form. It is simply a matter of unlocking where it’s hidden away. Your judgement surely is as clear as ever. Believe me, you are not losing your touch.”
