“I mean, I know I didn’t do anything but I’m still sorry that you’re having a tough time or whatever. Is there anything I can do to help? I’m really good at getting coffee.”
“So am I.” She replied as she held up her coffee cup in her hand. “But honestly the best thing you could do right now is sit down so people don’t get suspicious about you talking to what must look like a shelf.”

“Boss. You?”
“Oh, yeah. That would make sense. Well, I’m sorry.”
“Why’re you sorry? You didn’t do anything. I’m the one who fucked up.”
“Yikes. Sounds rough. Also sort of sounds like the beginning of a child’s story book. ‘A Monster named Responsibility.”
“Scarier than any sort of Children’s book. But you gotta make a decision here, come sit down here with me or stop talking, because if she catches me I’m blaming you.”
❝ Yes. ❞
“Well then, come on over. The floor isn’t very comfortable but I think you’ll manage to suck it up, yeah?”
“How did your responsibilities present themselves in the form of a person?”
“Because my...Well my boss has the magical ability to do that.”
“But don’t they all?”
“What am I doing? Well, I’m quite literally hiding from my responsibilities that have presented themselves in the form of a person. Want to join?”
“Alright, I need opinions. Three menus enter, only one dinner ordered. Help me pick?”
“I’m the last person you want to ask, i’m so new they haven’t even sent me menus yet.”
“We should leave before they realized I dumped a bowl of Fritos in your bag just in case I got hungry.”
“C’mon man, you went for the Fritos? There were mini cookies over there!”
A small chuckle escaped her lip while she shook her head slightly. “I don’t know if it’s so “badass”, but yeah, it is pretty challenging. That’s what I like about it though. And it’s like, we know so much about the brain, but at the same time there’s so much we don’t know. I want to be part of something that allows me to explore what we think we have adequate information about and discover something new.” It was clear that this was something she was really passionate about, as her eyes practically lit up just by talking about it.
“The brain, ocean, and space, all vast things I don’t wanna mess with.” She stated simply, as whenever she found herself thinking too hard on them, she had a tendency to fall into existential crisis. Thinking about how the brain named itself was not something she liked thinking about. “Although there’s probably going to come a time when we know all we can know about them, and I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be around for it.”
❝ Alright, darlin’, I’ll stay out of it. But I’ve got your back if you need me. ❞ he said, suddenly serious. However, he didn’t want to sour the mood so his seriousness was short lived and he broke out into another grin. ❝ So, how about that drink? ❞
She was taken aback by his seriousness, and could tell he meant what he had said. She was surprised that even though there was that certain loyalty that extended to fellow armed forces comrades, that someone she had just met was so absolute about providing help, even when expressly warned about shit storms. She sighed in relief as he spoke again. “Yes, please.”
Bad Company - Bad Company
Even though he was used to improvise it somehow wasn’t as easy in real life situations and he usually found himself fall silent than say something random to try lightening the mood. Ray’s suggestion forced a smile out of him, and he nodded in approval. “Yes, please. I hate awkward conversations and lately there’s been way too many of them. We can head to Charlie’s if you’d like? They’ve got both food and beer.”
“Food and beer?” she gasped dramatically. “How cosmopolitan.----Although, on the honest side, I have no idea what or where Charlie’s is so...Well, you’re gonna have to lead the way, cuz.”
