Two hands appear to be loosely held together. The person is possibly an adult that works with their hands given that the hands have numerous lines across them. Perhaps a red fruit with small purple stems or leaves is being lightly pinched by the thumb and index finger. The person might be inspecting the plant. Perhaps the red plant was picked up nearby as the blurred background appears to contain a gray colored path and green, yellow, and brown colored vegetation.

A semitransparent person is wearing round glasses and orange clothes. To the right of the semitransparent person is half a glasses frame and an eye. This creates a surreal scene. Behind the person is a mound of wood chips as well as gray, tan, and red burnt colored wooden fences. Both green metal and wooden sticks are tied together by plastic. On the very far right is a plant with green and yellow leaves.

A dark-haired woman is wearing a puff black jacket. Behind the woman are a multitude of plants and trees. Through her glasses she stares sternly at the viewer. Recent snowfall has sprinkled her hair and jacket with snow and water droplets.

I was taking candid photographs of my family. My mother and sister are browsing for items to buy at a grocery store. Since my family is used to me taking unposed photos of them, I was able to get a shot of them naturally shopping. My mother has a discerning and focused expression. Her grabbing onto the jar of peanuts emphasizes her hands in the portrait.

The texture of the water in reflective puddles appears smooth. The road possesses a bumpy texture, which is enhanced by the water covering it. The clouds seem to have a fluffy texture despite how large they appear.

There is a large range of value in the sky. The clouds range from a dark gray to light gray. Some parts of the sky are white or pink-orange where there is an absence of clouds. The road is primarily dark, but has lighter value within areas of reflective water.

A rainbow travels from the center of the sky to the tallest tree. To the right of tallest tree is a shorter and fuller tree as well as a tree with barren branches. In the foreground grows many plants, some shades of green and some tan colored.

During a rainy October afternoon, I drove to Green Valley Forest Preserve to take photos. I actually had to wait a bit in my car before the rain died down for photo taking. This luckily led to many plants being covered in rainwater. The overcast gray skies made the lighting soft.

I placed the camera onto the ground in order to take the photo at a slow shutter speed. Another benefit to placing the camera on the ground is the view that a dog or bug would have, an unusual view. In lightroom I was able to fix the graininess, which resulted from a high ISO, with detail sharpening.

I learned how to utilize the clone tool on Photoshop in order to cover two small lights in the background. The lights were covered with a cloned greens section of the trees. I also found out how in certain contexts, a shallow depth of field can create a mysterious hazy look for the work.

The texture is very present in the photo as the bottle has a matte finish, a smooth metal texture. Line is another major element. There are many straight white and yellow lines throughout the field and track. There are irregular lines created by the trees and clouds. Metal grey lines are also made by the seat. The clouds contain value as there are many different steps between the darkest grey and white.

“Power house mechanic working on steam pump” 1920

The subject of the photo is a man at labor. Using the job title, power house mechanic, in the title highlights the importance of workers and their work. The photo’s artistic value probably made this photograph famous. The photo does well in framing the mechanic in a circle. There is good contrast between the lighter skin compared to the darker machinery.

Lewis Hine, 1874-1940

Hine is famous for his photography that led to social reform. He photographed people, including children, at work. His photos were important in ending child labor in the United States.

To get creative photographs I took pictures of the sewer from differing angles and distances. One really useful angle I found was to put the camera at ground level in order to make the sewer very prominent. Taking close ups of a sewer is very interesting as people often do not inspect such an everyday object. When composing the photo, I zoomed in on the words manufactured onto the sewer. I learned that you can get a lot of one single subject if you just change your shooting position and camera settings.

The goal of assignment was to take 25 unique photos of a single sewer. I found out you can get a lot of different photos from a sewer. Taking a picture of the inside of a sewer can be like an opening of a cave. I was able to do that by paying attention to my depth of field; I made sure I captured the inside in focus. Composing the photo was also key in getting an interesting photo. The grates were naturally there to frame what portions to show within the sewer.

Bad Photo

I think this is a bad photo as there is not a single subject is focus. This messiness could confuse someone.

Aug 25th

After reviewing in class, I found out that there is not a focal point in the photo rather than being out of focus. This photo could be improved with cropping. For future photos, I could consider having a focal point.
