I couldn’t, Ray. What I really feel is rather impolite and I’d rather be kind about my future sister-in-law.
“Yes and I love that you’d rather be kind, but I want to know how you really feel, honestly Connie. It’s a big change and you should be able to talk about it with somebody,” Rayna shot her best friend a pair of puppydog pouting eyes, trying both to be cute and sincere. She didn’t like to see her best friend so far down in the dumps.

In his momentary panic, Augustus had hardly noticed the familiar face approach. If a little surprised to see Rayna sliding into the seat between himself and the woman, the look he gave her was one of relief. He was quick to pull himself together, though, smiling at his saviour gratefully. “I was only being polite,” he said, once the woman had left. Not entirely true. He had certainly crossed into outright flirting once or twice, having felt obligated to, but he wasn’t about to explain that. “Or trying to be. Perhaps I’d been doing it wrong.”
Rayna smiled at him, took a moment to really look at how handsome he was. “Oh no, I think you were doing it perhaps a little too well,” she laughed, her breath catching on the small soprano giggle that escaped her. “She seemed to think you two were going to march down the aisle, poor girl.” Sitting on the barstool, she swung her legs back and forth, secretly revelling in the fact she had something to busy herself with so she wouldn’t just say any silly thought that popped into her head.
“Right, my engagement. Thank you,” he nodded, his tone completely disinterested, “I’m thrilled, as you can see.”
“I don’t understand you two,” Rayna sighed, half exasperated, “I would be jumping for joy right now.”

“Good. If I thought you were settling, you know I’d probably team up with Igor and terrorise the poor man.” Anastasia heaved a sigh. “It’s closer to a cruel irony, I’d say. The man I’d sneak off with to ignore the pressures of all this is suddenly… well, the opposite.”
“The only thing I settle for is the lack of good vodka here,” she joked happily. Rayna tried to remain empathetic, but it was hard given that Anastasia seemed to be shunning herself away from what she herself saw as a dream. “But it could be, he could be,” she tried, her voice full of hope, “You just have to give it a chance.”

Penelope tipped her head to the side, resting a hand over Rayna’s, “Don’t work hard, work smart. You can’t drive yourself into the ground, or you won’t be in top shape to take over.” If there was anyone who knew how much Rayna wanted the part, it was her, and she respected her willingness to work as hard as she could to prove herself. Her nose wrinkles as Rayna continues on, “You must be in this country long enough if you’re beginning to refer to people as gits.” Smiling, Penelope nods, “I won’t forget, I promise. We need to get your name out to some of our bachelors. We can’t have you without prospects.” Scoffing, the girl shook her head as Rayna brought up Anastasia. Her whole situation rubbed her the wrong way. “I wouldn’t be so positive of the ‘married off’ bit just yet. With such public outrage? She’s looking like an ingrate more than anything else. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rosiers were a bit offended right now.”
Rayna looked down, smiled at her friend’s hand; the simple touch coupled with genius advice warmed her heart and served as a happy reminder that there were people in her court. She wasn’t sure if there was a way to work this ‘smart.’ Ballet demanded absolute perfection, a divine combination of strength and poise, it was what had taught the young foreign girl that practice made perfect. “You’re right,” she said easily and happily, she was unafraid to give credit where credit was due. It was no secret that Penny was brilliant and Rayna was never one to discount her friends on their accomplishments. “Thank you,” she said half out of exasperation. Had she been at home, Rayna would likely be shown off to some thick headed brute. The men in England seemed to have much more of an elegance to them than Bulgarians. “You’re not wrong,” she shrugged, “And I really don’t see the bother, Evan is a doll any of us would be lucky to marry him... And the most curious part of it all is that she’s already had some resemblance of a tryst with him. She really shouldn’t have been so surprised.”
There were times when politely playing along with a girl’s flirting was good - necessary, even. At a ball or dinner party, for example, where countless eyes could be watching you. This, however, was not one of those times. Sat at the bar, having turned to order another drink, he didn’t realise the girl had moved closer until looked back and she seemed to be leaning in. Augustus spoke without thinking. “What are you doing?”
Having gone out that night to celebrate, Rayna had lost track of her friends quite quickly throughout the seemingly endless glasses of champagne. If she hadn’t have known better she would have thought her glass was charmed so that it would never know emptiness. She could feel giddiness rise within her and it was though the bubbles within her wine had taken over her personality. She knew better than to stay out past a decent time, but when she saw a sloppily drunk woman start to lean in on Augustus she knew she had to make one last detour on her way out of the bar. “Excuse me m’aam,” Rayna said politely as she slid onto the seat in-between the woman and Gus, “I think you’re bothering my friend.” A curt nod and smile shut the woman up before she was able to smile at the man, “You really seem to be quite the charmer.”

“Fooling around in a coat cupboard at some event is not romantic, Rayna. That had better not be your standard for these things,” she warned, giving her a look that said yes, she was silly.
“I know that! It’s just the idea of it all.. I mean first you sneak off to ignore the pressures of one night and then before you know it the two of you are sneaking off to ignore the whole world together.” Rayna had many flaws, one of them being the power to romanticize anything. The young girl had spent so much of her life wondering what the future may hold and as she was standing still watching her friends move forwards in their own lives, she couldn’t help but romanticize every word she heard.

Penelope gives a small fleeting smile, nodding a touch and deciding it best to not say whether she would attend or not. Not when she saw the tiny shifts in Rayna’s demeanor – she knew the girl too well to know her and Constance’s suspicions on her interest in Augustus was true. Penelope gasps, clasping her hands together, the beginnings of a smile curving on her mouth, “Understudy, that’s good right? All we have to do is…hope the worst befalls the other girl so you can take her slot. I know you’ll be brilliant.” Giggling, Penelope is glad to be talking about Rayna’s dancing. “Really,” she asks incredulously, frowning a bit, “Oh, not to worry, next gala, I promise Connie and I will introduce you to everyone we know. If you haven’t met them all at the wedding, by then, of course. Everyone who’s anyone is attending.”
“Yes it’s splendid,” Rayna smiled sweetly, “Though it’s nearly double the work and double the anxiety waiting to see if some git is going to fall down or not.” She was eager to have something more than dreaming to fill her days with, the extra work load was welcomed with open arms; it was the duties of her new position that set her on edge. She would have to do the work of three people for the praise of none. The Bulgarian girl smiled sweetly at her friend’s praise, she had been dancing for so long for no other reason than a genuine love of it that it was nice to finally be getting a sliver of payoff. “I’m going to hold you to that,” she said with a giggle, “Seeing Anastasia getting married off before me feels like a stab to the heart.” What she said was in jest, she was happy for her friend, though there was a familiar pang of jealousy.

“Raising funds is a charming idea, yes I’ll agree with you both on that. It will make you both look like angels sent to save the streets from never ending debris and chaotic paranoia. Speaking of which how are you faring after that scare? I do hope you were not in too much of a shock, the culprits will be caught I am sure. –I like the masquerade concept, perfect for Halloween celebrations. Is there anything you need from me to help out?”
“I don’t know what you mean by ‘look like,” she smirked, “I’ll have you know I am nothing less than angelic.” Rayna felt a blush crawl across her cheeks and she suddenly wished she had a glass she could drink from, anything to do with her hands which were presently balled in her lap. Her demeanour softened at his curiosity, “I won’t lie, I was quite shaken over it. I move myself across the continent and then the clock strikes terror. Not exactly ideal.. but I guess that’s just a sign of the times.” A soft sigh escaped her, “Were you nearby during? Igor told me it was just horrible. I’m not certain yet, though I will need a suitable escort if you wouldn’t mind.”

“Such a thing would be beneficial, I suppose, as it would be foolish to assume that such events were a one time thing.” She gave Rayna a critical look, attempting to determine if her enthusiasm would ultimately translate to actual effort and hard work. “Of course, that would mean a long term commitment and while I would help obviously, I do also have a full time job. That would place quite a lot of responsibility on your shoulders. Is that something you would be prepared for?” Her parents wouldn’t have any interest in such a cause, no, but Stefano would manage to get them out the way if it came down to it. “It shouldn’t be a problem.”
“Well how often can disaster strike? I’m not sure it will take up so much of my time that I’d have to give up dancing,” Rayna shrugged. Her mother had been on boards of various charities whilst rearing her children and running a revered household, the younger girl knew she needed to start early if she wanted to master the art of multitasking. “This could be the loveliest evening of all time if we do it right- It’s gauche of me to say that about something spurred from the macabre isn’t it?”

”There are worse things in life than doing what you want.” He gave a shrug of his shoulders, but he left it at that. Her question got a laugh out of him as he glanced to her. “I never did, probably never will. How come you don’t like catching criminals?”
Rayna didn’t have anything to say back to him, but the comment made a visceral impact on her and she smiled sweetly. “I never really thought I’d be the sort that is capable of such things. I reckon you need to be big and strong.”

Her excitement was contagious. Amos watched her read over the contents of the letter, a small grin stretching over his lips at just how pleased she sounded. He didn’t know what it was but he was glad that it made her happy. He was a bit surprised when she handed him the letter but raised an eyebrow as he perused it, “Uh, if it’s supposed to say something about a… winter production then yes?” He smiled widely, “What’s it about?”
Rayna couldn’t help herself, excitement took over her body and she wrapped her arms around Amos pulling him into a quick hug. Her voice was full of hope now, of an excitement she didn’t know she was capable of. She let go of him, but the wide toothy grin was still painted on her face. “It’s my company, they’re, they... They like me!” She shouldn’t have sounded so surprised, dancing was of the things that Rayna dedicated herself to whole heartedly. She was there before the other girl’s arrived and stayed long after they left. She just didn’t think anybody noticed. “I know it sounds silly, it’s just dancing but.. its my dream.”

“You can say that again,” she sighed, feeling relief that at least Rayna seemed to understand. Anastasia was getting sick of people regarding her as if she was over reacting. She paused. “Well… we’ve flirted for a few years, even sneaked off together at a few parties, but I doubt our parents know. That was never anything more than a little fun.”
Trying not to let her emotions play against her face, Rayna felt a little perplexed. “Well then shouldn’t this just be the beginning of a new adventure? I mean you’re sneaking off on life with him. I dunno, it just seems to sounds more and more romantic the more you tell me,” she said, “I may just be silly, but I think it sounds lovely.”

“Wait, so you’re goingto work this hard to dance like once and then never again?” he raised an eyebrow at her, unable to comprehend how that could ever sound like a good idea. “Put off the kids. My parents didn’t have me till they were nearly 50.” Alastor let out a snort at her comment. “Well now you have.”
“Well its different for me I suppose,” Rayna shrugged feeling small, “It’s expected of me to give all of those things up. To be married with children hopefully by twenty-five. It’s just the done thing.” She looked down, happy to know they were nearing her flat. “Mr. Moody, may I ask why you don’t like to dance?”
