Been looking at this chart for ammunition dice

And I've been thinking that for like dnd 5e it might be cool to apply it for shields. The starting die you use depends on the quality of the shield, and whenever you are attacked and have the shield equipped (adding to your AC) you will roll the die and if it's a 1 you move down to the next lowest dice size.

Then when you get to the d4 and roll a 1 you have a single use of the shield left.

I feel this adds some extra tension and mechanical interest to shields - having to buy new ones every so often, and can add another layer to dungeon crawling. Do you carry on with a nearly broken shield? Or go back to get a new one?
