Veronica rose her eyebrows at him a little bit, “I don’t know, for you to participate in it?” She crossed his arms, “Gavin bought me something for Christmas. Did you?”

"I'm sorry..." Ray sighed once again. He shouldn't be taking it out on his colleagues, it was a personal matter that he had to deal with out of office hours. "Sorry, yeah... It's just... I left it at home." He leaned back in the chair, annoyed at himself, "And I know that you'd fucking love it... But it's just... I fucked up."

"HOLY SHIT!" Ray sarcastically cried, before sighing. "Sure, I know it's Christmas. What do you expect from me, though?"

"Is that my shirt?" (Killjoy AU)

"Yes," Kari answered honestly. She twisted the hem with her fingers, looking up at him, biting her lip nervously. "I should have asked. Sorry."

That was certainly a strange request. She knew she had to stick to the protocol for clothing outside of the apartment. However, what had him so worried? Well, she wasn’t worrying about it now. She refused to let it bother her today. No, she was going to stay in a good mood.

"Okay," Kari promised. She tentatively wrapped her arms around him, resting her head on his chest. "I’ll be careful if you are as well. You’ll always keep me safe, right?"

Without a thought, Ray's arms instinctively wrapped around Kari and a hand diverted to her head, so he could stroke her hair. "Always." He muttered, with a small smile. "I promise."

There wasn't a doubt that he would get into trouble, at some point. Sure, he was currently on the government's good side, but he had seen how quickly and easy it was to step out of line. He risked it every day, by not taking his pills. But he had vowed, since they met in the orphanage, that he would keep Kari as safe as possible.

"Let's just enjoy today," It was shaping up to be a good day, with his shift not starting until later and his best friend leaning on the rebellious side without really realizing. He just hoped it could stay like that. "I'll get changed into another shirt, we can sit down and just enjoy life." Like we used to, before we were adults in this messed up world...

"Is that my shirt?" (Killjoy AU)

"Yes," Kari answered honestly. She twisted the hem with her fingers, looking up at him, biting her lip nervously. "I should have asked. Sorry."

"Oh, thank you." She blushed, and dropped her gaze. His compliment pleased her. Today was one of her better days. She wasn’t having withdrawals, or negativity. That could change anytime, and probably would tomorrow at least. However, for now she was trying to enjoy her feelings and the affect Ray had on them. "I don’t have much outside of the typical outfits like you. If you like, then perhaps I could borrow your shirts more often to make up for that."

Ray instantly reacted, nodding and agreeing that she was able to take his shirts whenever she wanted. "Just take them when you want, honestly!"

But then he remembered something. Color wasn't allowed. He had stole the shirts from the bins, where they rid ex-Killjoys of their belongings, and wore them around the apartment when he knew there weren't any patrols around.

Of course, he wouldn't tell Kari where he got them. That might scare her, or worry her more than she was already about him. But he could warn her. "Just, you know... Be careful about where and when you wear them."

"Mark..?" Ray muttered, walking up behind a rather fluffy haired character. He knew that voice. The build matched. But... In Austin? Really? "Markiplier?"

"Hey Ray!"

Mark’s grin was wide as he greeted the other.  Ray looked as if he couldn’t believe that it was actually him, which incidentally the exact reaction he was going for when he decided to make a surprise trip to Texas.  On the plane ride over, he’d been a bit nervous that just when he landed in Austin, Ray would have decided to take an impromptu vacation to Godknowswhere in the middle of Wherevertheheck.

He was relieved to find that wasn’t the case.

"Yep that’s me.  Here in the flesh."

"Shit!" Ray laughed, before holding out a hand then giving Mark a hug once he had taken Ray's hand.

It was certainly a surprise and it was a great one, of that! Mark lived in LA. There was no thought that he might visit the Puerto Rican in Texas on a random day, such as this.

As soon as the two pulled out of the 'manly' hug, the shorter tried to find the right words, through the surprise. "I - What brings you here?"

Gavin had been amid the deepest of depths of his work at the point that Ray talked to him. The room had been almost entirely silent aside from tapping of keyboards up until that point, so the lad had almost been startled from the voice.

A curious frown formed on his face as he stood from his chair and wandered around the side into the second cubicle; leaning down against the desk to examine the screen. As he read over the large sum, his eyes widened with near-shock. It was no wonder their boss had asked them to remain behind.

"Christ… Is—-… He’s been laundering. This must be why terms’ve been low!" He knew the boss was a prick, but he didn’t expect him to be this much of a prick.

And it was illegal.

"…We could get him locked away for this."

"We could..." Ray muttered, agreeing with his workmate, while his mind was elsewhere. "We could... But..."

There was a plan brewing in Ray's mind. It was crazy. Something he would never result to. Well... He wouldn't have, until now. It could get him fired. Arrested, possibly. But, his hate for his boss had turned into creativity and had forged a way to grab that bonus that everyone deserved.

"Maybe, we keep this to ourselves..." He thought aloud. "And we fix this, on our own."

"Yes," Kari answered honestly. She twisted the hem with her fingers, looking up at him, biting her lip nervously. "I should have asked. Sorry."

"No!" Ray insisted, before taking a step forward and looking at Kari. It was odd. Different. New. He had seen her in the same sort of outfits - day in, day out - and now she was trying something new. It was... Nice. "Looks good on you."

Michaela was glad she’d had him, besides the fans who were very vocal about their opinions. She meant it when she said those words, even when they first met and hung out in New York. You could say it was a great start to a friendship and yet a relationship.

Ray was grateful. After all he had done, after all he had been through, he still had Michaela. The way they had met before they really worked together, it just all fitted so well and had directed them to this point in their relationship. They both had their ups and both had their downs, but Team Better Friends is here to stay.

"I... Yeah... Same..." Ray pulled away, smiling shyly. "Thank you, Mickey."

He was right. It wasn’t the best. Nothing really compared to being in his arms, his fingers carding through her hair, his voice soothing just above a whisper. Yet, clutching that pillow to her chest still helped, calming her a little to think of Ray. “Thank you,” Kari said softly, blinking away tears, “but you’re not here.” She just needed him right now. It almost made it worse that she knew he couldn’t be there, no matter how much it was wanted. “I wish you could be here, or I could be there. Long distance sucks. I miss you.”

"I miss you too," Ray admitted, almost a whisper into the microphone. It wasn’t a thing he said, as he wasn’t really one for emotions. Sure, he had them and showed that, but being the sappy side of emotional wasn’t something he showed very often. And even then, he wasn't quite sure what his relationship with Kari was...

"But, like... I will try and see you soon. And, if I need to, I'll take leave or call in sick or... Anything, just so I can help you through." He quietly told her down the mic, gripping onto the pillow more tightly as he closed his eyes. "Because both you and Marco just don't deserve this shit!"

Michaela laughed lightly at Ray’s antics. The roses were truly beautiful and she just wanted to reach out and kiss him, but she refrained herself. She did however open her arms to hug him after she set the cut roses on her desk.

With a shake of his head, the lad laughed lightly. Michaela wasn't lucky. Ray didn't believe that.

Sure, they both had to deal with threats from the extreme fans and had their lives dictated from outside of the relationship, but Ray was lucky to have her. She was his best friend and somehow had become his girlfriend. But he just didn't feel that he was the best she could do.

As he held her in the hug, the Peurto Rican sighed, "You could do better."

Michaela was being admittedly cocky but it’s not every day that you’re boyfriend buys you roses, let alone the ‘rose king’ himself. She half expected for him to keep them but the  small smile that formed on her face was undeniable  as she held the red flowers and leaned over to kiss his cheek.

"No occasion, Mogar," Ray told his best friend. "I just... I keep noticing how much this... Us... Like, how much you mean to me. And how really lucky I am to be with you..."

The lad felt like he was embarrassing himself. Even though it was just Michaela and himself in the office, he couldn't help but try and hide his face and blush brighter than before. Like he had said, emotions weren't his forte.

"Hey... Mickey... I'm not good at emotions, god fuckin' knows that. But like... You're my best friend and my girl... And..." Ray whipped out a bunch of roses from behind his back, with a small laugh, "Fuck it. I got you these." He looked down then muttered, "They smell better than me!" Before laughing and handing them over to the ginger.

Ryan watched him as he walked past heading to his seat, still not seeing any signs of changes. Goddammit. If he was the only one in the office he might just have to quit and subject himself to a life of solitude and large hats. Very large hats. 

He carried on working as Ray sat down at his desk, focusing on his work to try and blank out the younger man. Until of course he noticed him. He turned and looked at Ray rolling his eyes at the comment. “Take a wild guess” He said as he just looked at him, really not in the mood for jokes. At least he hadn’t brought up Edgar yet. That was probably going to be the worst thing he was going to have to deal with from the office.

"Did you become Edgar?" The transformation wasn't the surprise, not after what Ray had seen in the mirror this morning, but the animal Ryan now shared genetics with did. It was almost as if whatever the fuck had happened to them both, knew what genes would make Ryan's life even worse. Which made Ray almost instantly regret the comment he had made.

"Sorry..." The lad muttered, looking at his hands in his lap. What would he want said to him, if he became a walking version of one of his own jokes? "It's... I... Uh... That's real fuckin' rough."

Of course, Ray didn't have the courage quite yet to show his. Despite it being less... Being easier to hide, than Ryan's, the lad didn't want to just show it and hope for the best. Which also meant, he wasn't going to explain why he was so easy going on the matter, without Ryan prompting him to.
