Soph looked up from the desk as she heard the gingle of the bells on the front door. It had only been a couple hours since she heard the news about Miles. He was like a brother to her, someone she looked up to. Someone her son called uncle. "Are you here to give your condolences or just gawk at us?" She questioned as she pinned them with her stare.
the others words knocked the confidence she tried to carry right out of her , her hands tightening around the strap of her bag lips pursed as she tried again for control standing at the door for beat . she had to be sympathetic and delicate , she wasn't here to talk about a prized pig at a fair or show stopping car but someone's death and a hopeful glimpse at their life , " i'm a journalist and i was hoping i could maybe ask you some questions . you are sophia cole , right .. ? an only child she never fought for her parents attention and affection . they sat comfortably in middle class in a city that's more an escape for others on the weekend . her father high up in a chain of command at a resort and her mother an artist . despite no need for it and their expressed happiness in her life at school she still tried to one up everyone , tried for the highest grades , tried to compete in tennis , cross country , everything she could think to do she did .
she just wanted them to be happy and proud despite them saying she didn't need to push so hard for that achievement . idle hands did bad things anyway , she had a small little group of friends that she kept from elementary school until graduation . even despite that she was never caught at parties or sneaking out . she was mostly at home facetiming a friend as she wrote for the school paper . it was writing for the paper and reading the kind of impact a journalist like walter cronkite and nellie bly had on the world that had her thinking of things in a grander way .
she started planning out her life when she was thirteen , knew exactly where she wanted to go to school , who she wanted to write for , everything was a straight line . until it wasn't when college acceptances started going out when she was old enough no penn state , nyu , university of arizona . there were more no's and thanks for your consideration letters than she'd care to admit to . the last school she thought to apply to was what stuck , csulb . just around the corner , an hour from home it wasn't cross country or a far enough to start making a real name for herself like she had hoped but it was something .
she went through college , falling off track only a bit to the college party scene and prolonging her duration there but when she finally graduated she was beyond ecstatic . now everything would start falling into place and articles with her name would start appearing in times .
but it was another hit when she had to move back to palm springs for a year writing for a local magazine about celebrity golf tournaments . frustration was the best word for that time but she still powered through , it was an overheard conversation about rift valley that had her doing her research and it was by something divine truly that there was an opening at their local paper . now she's been in rift valley for two years in an apartment with a leaking kitchen faucet finally starting to carve her own path and name from stone . she still feels stuck like she hasn't made any real progress , but she's doing the damn thing .
the world has a funny way of taking the optimist chewing them up and spitting them out , but it would make for a great story someday living through it all .

he came into the world screaming to a father already six feet under and a birth giver so uninterested in being a mother she had to be made to sign the birth certificate . it was his father’s mother that stepped up , a woman still in mourning wanting another chance . they weren’t the wealthiest a thing the kids in school were quick to make fun of when he was old enough to attend , but he felt rich with the love of his grandmother and excelled from elementary school until the end of middle school .
his grandmother passed in between eighth and ninth grade and he was sent into the foster care system where he started acting out , getting into trouble skipping school shuffling around different places as foster parents citied him as too much after a month or two . he lacked a proper place to belong , started selling drugs to start saving for when he aged out and couldn’t depend on others like that anymore . the strip in vegas was ripe with people to sell to .
it was by luck that his birth giver actually found him and reached out , by then ( when sebastian was sixteen ) she had a new family . a set of girl twins and a man that had been in the army . sebastian didn’t have to ask the door was opened as she tried to atone for leaving him to begin with .
they weren’t spared from his behavioral difficulties but her husband shut it down rather quickly , sebastian managed his ged at nineteen . then there was a little push and shove and he was on his way through basics for the marines , something he didn’t complete much to everyone’s disappointment . he left the house out of shame and out of not wanting to hear something smart from his step dad .
he still left with a skill set that came in handy and maybe knew the right kind of people that had stepped up their game from when he was in high school . no more small pond stuff but bigger picture things . at twenty-two sebastian was put into contact with someone in the santoro family interested in what he could do , so he made the move to california .
the first kill was nauseating and maybe not executed in the most professional of ways but he learned quickly , the smells he associates from the first kill is bleach from the clean up , iron , and something sickly sweet he can’t remember . he began to detach from what he was doing made things easier to swallow when you detached yourself , act without thinking too much .
he cut off what he had left of his family though he does still send his half sisters gifts on their birthdays and at christmas never marking it as being from him . the lone wolf bullshit without a trace of collateral just made the most sense .
it still amazes him that he can wash his hands and the blood just goes down the drain .
