“ i don’t know how you do it, chica. i’d DIE if i didn’t have a cuchifrito spot at least down the block from me. it’d be TORTURE. “ jane says with a soft laugh and shake of her head. maybe she’d gotten too used to the benefits that came with living in el barrio but as much as jane did at one time dream of getting out like her friend, nina, actually managed to do, she felt as if she’d never be truly happy. “ i’m glad you’re HOME too, i missed you but you’re doing your thing so i’ll forgive you. especially when i get some of that PERNIL tonight, now you know i can’t pass it up.“ she teases with a small smirk on her lips. “ i’ve been good “ jane says with a shrug of her shoulders. “ taking classes at BMCC and working my butt off at the restaurant. nothing special. “

          ❝ are you making   good money   at the restaurant ,   or what ?     because let me tell you ,   these student loans are   NO JOKE   and I haven’t gotten any internships this summer because i was technically still a freshman when i applied to them.      no one   hires freshmen as interns , ❞      nina sighs.

          vanessa just sighs, says nothing because she knows nina           is right. it is a job and it’s one she’s thankful to have. without it,           her dreams would be even more unobtainable than they some-           times seem already. even so, she’s never been the best at           showing gratitude and instead complains while getting her work           done.

          as she listens to nina’s visions of her future, she can’t help but           snort. starbucks. anybody who wants to put her in front of costumers           before ten in the morning would probably regret that decision quickly           enough. but if it meant getting her studio downtown? she’d be willing           to give it a shot. ❝ hell yeah i am. can you just make sure the landlords           and whoever’s hiring in hollywood are on the same page as you? ❞           she asks, a smile finally tugging on her lips as she looks over towards           nina. ❝ when you’re busy taking over the world, at least i’m gonna take           west village. ❞

        ❝ as long as you   SAVE A SPOT   for me on that couch of yours.     scholarship or none ,   these student loans   STILL   don’t come cheap.     i’ve got to mooch off of   someone   in the city while i come back to work my fancy summer internships. ❞     she laughs ,   her head coming to   REST   on vanessa’s shouder ,   caught up in thoughts of the   TWO   of them roughing it out on the lower west side ,   living together and suffering through their early twenties   ( maybe   not quite   so early on vanessa’s end )   together ,   as the   UNSTOPPABLE   duo they’d been when vanessa was still in school with her.

     while it wasn’t fair for sonny to assume that she’d lose nina to the soul-sucking, non-public-transportation-having, everything-she’s-ever-hated west coast, it wasn’t like sonny could stop the paranoia. nina would be the first of her friends to flee the city for college, something sonny couldn’t fathom of doing. she lets out a small laugh when nina pulls her into a hug, holding on just an inch tighter than necessary. 

     “aight, aight.” she begins to pull away, looking at nina in the eye. “but i swear, if you come back here talking about kale anything, i might have to un-brainwash you for your own good. got it?”

          ❝ yeah   RIGHT ,   sonny.     if i come back asking for kale   anything   my mom will have my ass or rush me to the emergency room , ❞     she jokes ,   KNOCKING   shoulders with the girl ,   a bright smile on her face.    she   PAUSES   for a moment.     nina feels oddly sentimental for all of a minute before she   clears   her throat and changes the subject of her leaving.     

          ❝ anyway ,   what’s   YOUR   plan for next year ?    I was   HOPING   maybe i’d encouraged you to start studying for the   SATS   a few years   early ,   but something tells me that   THAT’S   a fever dream. ❞
