RIP - Barney Frank, Photo by Ted Dully, 1980—the year he was elected to Congress
“Being both gay and Jewish, it never seemed possible that I could be elected to anything,” he declared. And Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz, who dated a high-school classmate of his, once said, “Because Bayonne (where he grew up) was such a sleazy place, nobody knew whether Barney was going to wind up in Congress or in jail.”

It may be difficult to comprehend how subversive and dangerous this kiss, taken in a Vancouver, B C, inside the hushed confines of a photo booth in 1953, was. It was a dangerous mementos of a concealed romance, a symbol of the brave life of Joseph John Belanger, a quiet vanguard of the early LGBTQ movement. Belanger lived as an openly gay man at a time when the simple act of sharing a kiss could get you thrown in jail.
