Hi there, wondering how long you guys (as Reading Nature) have been around? When were you founded? I just stumbled upon your blog the other day.
Hey!
The crowdfunding campaign started in May 2012 and lasted one month. We managed to get 60% funded and we are currently making the scientific experiment depicted into our explanatory video: http://www.rockethub.com/projects/7404-reading-nature
Thank you for passing by!
Reading Nature
Thank you for your support!
Guys, we did it!
In one month we collected 1.300$ from 31 supporters from all over the world. This is just incredible! Here comes the names of the supporters (alphabetic order) as you would find them on the webpage of RocketHub.
Thank you heartily!

DNA is a long novel
This novel is written within 24 hours. This is the time necessary for a human fertilized egg to recombine the 46 chromosomes mum and dad gave to you. Think about this. It’s the most complex and extraordinary novel ever composed, and it takes the shortest time a tale could be ever written.
You are not composed exclusively buy mum and dad DNA. As soon as you born, you become part of the word and the word becomes part of you. Precisely, it contaminates you. Millions of bacteria are seeded on your skin at the time of your birth. They will proliferate and cover you as a glove. As the first drop of milk comes to your mouth, thousands of bacteria will colonize your gut. From this moment on, they will digest your food, protect your body from invaders and produce vitamins that your body don’t know how to make.
They are part of you and will leave you only the day of your death.
What is #SciFund? SciFund is an experiment: can scientists and researchers grant their projects through online crowdfunding systems? The experiment was peroformed already once, back in 2011. A group of scientists organized a platform on Rockethub website to finance 50 different scientific projects. Backers were numerous, and the initiative rose more then 70,000$. Most importantly, the campaign gave to many nerdy PhD students, postdocs and investigators the possibility to get a public window to show off their jobs.
Now we are doing this again.
#SciFund is more then rising money for research. It's an exchange. We want to involve the future users of our gain of knowledge at a more interactive and close level then ever before. You are now evaluating the research that people does, all over the world. You decide if it's worth it or not. You can comment on it and feedback your ideas.
Welcome to the third dimension of science experience.
SciFund Lab Notes - part 2!
After extensive discussion, me and Fernanda, with the vital help of Laura and Jonas, set the stage for the video shooting. It's hard to be in front of a camera and to look serius while you are hoping that people understands you at the point where they will support you. Economically!
Here's what happened behind that camera. A lot of fun!
Working on a #SciFund campaign is not easy. I decided that I needed help. I contacted Fernanda Torre, experience designer, to give me tips about my scientific message, make it understandable and engage people with a good video.
Here it's what happened!
