ok tua spoilers but. can we talk about five.

this is the five who spent 40+ years in the apocalypse, missing his family and wanting nothing more than to go home. who turned down whatever shit the commission offered him and took every risk to go back and save them in the s1 timeline. who never gave up on trying to save them even when they didn’t appreciate him for it. who spent literally three seasons fighting for his family with every breath, and now he just.

gave up on all of that, to have a dumb romance. WITH HIS BROTHER’S WIFE. gave up on his family, and hid the notes he and lila needed to go home for months. and when he did get back, he told diego he wanted to kill him.

five from season one would gut this five like a fish. five from season one would’ve never gotten with lila, and he certainly never would’ve given up on his family.

i can’t decide what’s worse- the idea that this character got so worn down over time that he gave up everything he stood for and loved, or that the writers never knew him at all

if I had a nickel for everytime a series I really liked had a great season 1 and 2, and an okay season 3 that had its ups and downs but was overall decent and had a very compelling ending, only to have a final and preplanned season 4 that absolutely butchers the characterizations and dynamics set up in the previous seasons, introduces new romance plotlines and love triangles out of the blue at the very last minute that ultimately added nothing to the plot, waters down the big bad they have been setting up all series, ignores its own past writing and ultimately creates more plotholes than resolutions - then I'd have two nickels. which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

Are you telling me the Hargreaves died like THAT? Diego and Five fighting. Lila heartbroken. Luther not getting any closure on what he wanted. No family or kids and still living in abandoned building owned by his dad. Klaus losing his sobriety, never getting to the point where he feels useful to the family. Viktor not being able to hold down a relationship for God knows why. Ben never becoming part of the umbrellas. Alison's career not going well.

They all died in miserable mediocrity in a dull timeline. After a lifetime of hardships, trying to save worlds (in their own assholy way). I wouldn't mind if they went for this so much if there was the story to back it up. I can't fathom why they would leave these characters like that.

It's so unsatisfying to us because it's so unsatisfying to the characters for no point. It doesn't make sense. I don't see whatever narrative final arc they were going for with this final timeline - it doesn't seem to say or mean anything. They didn't need a perfectly happy ending or anything. They just needed some closure.

I get there were only 6 episodes to squeeze things into, but I would've much preferred if all 6 episodes were just about them all chilling together and bonding

You see, the biggest problem with this is that Five HAD a love story all along.

His love for his family has been THE very foundation of the show and what kickstarted the entire chain of events.

He spent 45 years in the apocalyptic wasteland because he loved them too much to give up.

He found them in every possible timeline.

He reversed time for them.

He became an assassin to get a shot, however small, at coming back to them.

He’s been through countless timelines, doing his best to save and protect them in every single one of them.

No matter how dire the situation, he always pushed to find a way to save his family. His devotion was stronger than anything and there was no line he wouldn’t cross for his siblings. No matter how self-destructive the cost, he sacrificed himself again and again just for a chance at reuniting with them and saving the world so they could live.

It was a destructive kind of love, yes, but also inspiring. I think it resonated with many people because love can be intense, we love and want to be loved with this kind of intensity and dedication.

So, to throw it all away for a romantic subplot that no one asked for is not only a huge disservice to Five’s character but also goes against everything he represents. We already knew he’s capable of love and that he loves deeply.

I don’t understand how the showrunner who worked on the series for 5+ years can say that Five had to have an arc like this. It doesn’t make sense. He already had a love story. Arguably, the most beautiful and deepest of them all. He didn’t need more, what he needed was to have it returned and to finally settle down after multiple lifetimes of putting his life on the line to keep his loved ones safe.

To say otherwise means that the writers fundamentally misunderstood what made Five a great character and what fans loved most about the show. It feels like a betrayal, because it is one. It proves that the creators not only misunderstood the core character of the show but also never paid attention to the fandom and its preferences.

There’s a difference between catering to the audience and what they ended up doing, which is a character assassination at its worst. And it’s not just the character who was ruined but also the entire premise of the show, the reason why fans loved it in the first place. There’s no coming back from something like this.

Don’t you just love it when fictional characters find true love, like the kind of love that helps to shape and define their arcs and serves as their chief motivation, and then 1 season later, those love interests disappear and those same characters are like “oh yeah, they’re not here anymore, oh well.”

okay so let me get this straight

Luther lost his wife then died as a stripper with a house that's falling apart

Diego died after just having found out his wife, who he'd been unhappy with for a long time, cheated on him with his brother

Allison died without a husband, with her career at a standstill, after not speaking to her family for years and without really fixing their relationship

Klaus died after relapsing after 3 years of sobriety, scaring his niece, without reuniting with Dave and with the additional trauma of being buried alive and sex trafficked

Five died having failed to stop the apocalypse - his only goal for the past, what, 60 years of his life - with unresolved feelings for Lila

Ben died suffering inside a huge blob that ended the world, never getting to be happy with Jennifer

Viktor died because he finally, FINALLY dared to question and oppose his father, after being unable to maintain a stable relationship with a woman for years (RIP Sissy ig)

Lila died stuck in an unhappy marriage, with conflicted feelings towards her husband AND his brother, with whom she had cheated

And nonetheless without any of his family members knowing where he and Lila are? Completely abandoning his family? And potentially letting them die in another apocalypse?
