Helloooo my friends! In honour of this month, and this day (June 28th), I’d like to share some Ace Attorney fics that touch on themes of self-acceptance, LGBTQ+ pride, affirmation and resilience.
When you search “Ace Attorney” in Google, the second item under the ‘People also asked’ section is: “Are there LGBT characters in Ace Attorney?” You bet your dang bippy there are! And I’m forever and always thankful to all the authors who have explored this in their writings.
The top nine fics on this list I believe are ones I haven’t yet shared before, and the rest are favourites I will most likely share again and again because they deserve all the love. Yes, I’m starting off with an epically long fic and yes, the English is sometimes not perfect (sometimes the character pronouns get mixed up... but in pride month, this kind of fits ;) ), but don't let these things be a barrier. And when this fic cooks, it really cooks. I initially came for the Narumitsu but stayed for the (surprise!), Langworth, Klappolo and absolutely bonkers of a case fic. This work also has probably one of the most sympathetic portrayals I’ve come across of Lang. And Miles! His ace/demi-awakening is something to appreciate too (thus here we are on the Pride list ;) ) I really appreciated and enjoyed the sensitively portrayed imperfect sex scenes sprinkled throughout too.

I can't recommend this series enough. It is so much fun and has created so much empathy for characters I either had mixed feelings or were kind of 'meh' about (hellooo Iris…). It is very queer. very dear to my heart and also, really, really entertaining. Here are two highlights from it:

(Ya Got) Trouble by Chatvert

This was last updated in 2021, with 44/48 chapters complete. And while I do wish that it was finished, it honestly doesn't matter. I’ve shared this fic before (once on my very first blog (Narumitsu fic recs: Neverending stories edition), this fic has some of the *best* Maya line and banter between characters:
"'Cause you and Mr. Edgeworth—" "Please don't say it, Maya. I really don't want to hear it out of your mouth." "—did the do."
It is sweet and sexy, and has solid, gorgeous Narumitsu, but the stand out take-away from the series story for me was the author’s treatment of FRANZISKA - specifically, a beautifully written trans-Franziska, and her coming to terms with the relationships she has with herself and her family, both by blood and found. I love this fic and part of the fun of doing these lists is that I get to reread them to refresh my memory like I'm in the middle of doing now! ;)

For my last entry… Oh, where do I even start??!!!! This work is about transformation, and Florida, and, and belonging, and to me, it truly felt transformative. You can see me (and the other readers) in the comments section of it, getting more and more emotionally impacted and invested as the story evolves. It and the author deserve so much love. I can’t words enough about it. It starts off with some excellent grade ‘A’ banter, and who doesn’t love a Miles and Phoenix road trip? But then oh my ducking god, it just reveals what it is truly about so beautifully and with such excellent craftsmanship. If you want to feel things, if you’ve ever been hurt by a loved one, if you want to laugh or experience Florida (!), if you want to be moved by writing that will make you feel connection, grief and hope, please read.
SPOILER ALERT: the following is the last paragraph of Chapter 5: Pleasantville. It is my favourite chapter in the whole book (and this is a book. I want to print it and press it in the hands of everyone I know who loves good writing. One day I will). To me, I think it encapsulates so much of what the LGTBQ+ Pride movement is about:
And then Miles is leaning back but only so he can yank his glasses off of his eyes and throw them to the sand, and then he’s taking Phoenix by the jaw once more and joining their lips and kissing him, kissing him, kissing him, kissing the goddamn life out of him, and he is pressing kisses to his lips and to the corner of his lips and to his cheeks and to his nose and to his forehead, and he is trailing a path down to Phoenix’s ear and telling him that he’s beautiful, that he’s gorgeous, that he’s perfect, that he’d do anything for him, anything, and that he’s his best friend, and that he loves him and loves him and loves him and loves him, and the sand is eating at their ankles and the smash of the waves is swallowing them whole and the sun is splintering out of the sky and into their eyes and Pleasantville is waking up, and Pleasantville is drawing its curtains back, and Pleasantville is looking out its windows, and Pleasantville would hate to see two men like this, and Pleasantville will see two men like this, and then Pleasantville will be changed, and then Pleasantville will be imperfect, and then Pleasantville will be perfect.
