Coming Out (1989) // dir. Heiner Carow
“Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up.”
— Louise Erdrich, The Painted Drum

getting older nothing feels important, and most things feel wasted. getting older is the worst, the feeling of awareness of getting older hurts. that road is shut, boarded up. the lights are off and we’re trying to find our way back home in the dark. come to find, that house was left in the past. being happy hurts, being sad hurts and being grumpy hurts more. everyone has their trauma. so much so that everyone sounds stupid, even this stupid attempt at poetry, written in bed, on a plastic keyboard designed in California. we get tired of wanting to be better, we hold onto missed calories like the string of a balloon, like being lighter will carry us away, to some righteous land. we choose new noses in the supermarket isle, swallow our pills. we sew diagnosis letters into our skin. no-one suffers like us. the water runs clear in our tap, but who cares when you’re still crying in Sicily? the guilt about it all only makes it worse.
before you know it, you’re forgotten and no-one likes a crybaby, baby.
