"I don't have a charger on me," Kris spoke, a rarity given that unless they were ever directly asked a question Kris was content to stand there silently without giving any real input. They reach down to dig out their own phone to check it, the battery isn't great but it's at least half way charged.

It's screen was cracked, mildly concerning given Kris remembered it being undamaged from before. He'll chalk it up to a misadventure in the dark worlds.

"You can borrow mine if you need to make a call."

"WELL. You can text your mom for us, then. Tell her we're gonna be a little longer than we thought." Chara drops their nearly-dead phone back into the cup holder. This little errand run is dragging on a lot longer than expected. Chara drums their fingers against the steering wheel as the light turns green, peering out the window at the accident as they drive past.

Two monsters, yelling at each other on the side of the road, while a hapless third tries to keep the peace. The cars don't look all that banged up, really. It's swiftly forgotten as they move past it, though.

"If Asriel's shitty car had damn plugs in it," they mutter, turning onto another road, the houses beginning to grow more sparse, "then maybe this wouldn't be a problem, but whatever. It's vintage, he says."

It's just the two of them today. Chara's... been wanting to get to know Asriel's kid sibling. Kris is... strange. Funny as hell, when they're not dead silent. And, of course, they have the shared experience of being human, but that doesn't necessarily mean much. There's humans in plenty of places, you just--y'know, have to go to them. Chara's never been fond of humanity, though, and much prefers the eccentricities of monsterkind. They wonder if Kris is the same.

"I wanted to show you a place," they say, tilting their head a bit as the trees begin to thicken around them. Another turn. "Do you get to explore outside of town all that often? I mean--you can't drive yet, right?"

IT IS A BIG and scary world, down here, in these caverns that Chara did not know existed. That they will likely never leave. They are... not afraid, really, of the monsters that surround them--they are more like family than their original one, and Chara clings tight to Toriel's hand as their mother leads them through the crowds.

It is a holiday, today, according to monsterkind. A festival is in full swing. Chara watches the celebrations with wide eyes, full of wonder and delight. It is so much better than any celebration on the Surface, because Chara gets to participate this time.

"What, um, what's the celebration for, exactly...?" They look up at Toriel with wide eyes, looking thoroughly interested and intrigued.

HOLIDAYS WERE NEVER NICE UNTIL THE ONE where you tried to off yourself. Granted, it wasn't like you climbed that mountain on Christmas Eve--no, you climbed it about a month before, actually, if not a little longer, and you stared down into that pit before deciding the fall was more loving than the home you didn't want to return to. So you jumped, and you fell, and. . . . . . you landed. See, you didn't expect to land. And you certainly didn't expect to find a family. A real one, a new one, and when they took you in and didn't ask you questions because they seemed to know you didn't have easy answers, you found yourself more at home than you'd ever felt before. So you'd stayed, even after that first night, and then the next, and the next, and the next, and. . . well, the woman you now call mom made gingerbread, and when you mentioned sort of off-handedly how you weren't the biggest fan of crunchy cookies, she made an entire batch of soft molasses cookies just for you. You still remember how it felt, sitting in the kitchen helping her roll the dough into little balls, because your hands were better built for it and you think maybe she wanted the company. The whole room smelled like cinnamon and nutmeg and she didn't use fire magic, because she noticed the way you would flinch when monsters used magic around you those first few months, and you didn't know it, then, but she also just wanted you to feel at home. She didn't know it, then, but you'd felt more at home than you'd ever felt in your life.
