I left the mountains behind and set off with my friends Emma and Jonas towards Uzbekistan. After a thorough search and a night on the Afghan border at Termez, we arrived into Samarkand, one of the legendary Silk Road cities. This is the Gur-i-Amir, mausoleum of Tamerlane. After a month in the Pamirs, Osh to Dushanbe, I decided to take a week off the bike and go for a short walk in the Fann Mountains. This is the trailhead at Artuch, where I started the walk, from here I crossed the Alaudin Pass, which involved 1,000m ascent and descent in the same day. A rare glimpse of the stunning Hindu Kush from the Wakhan Valley. These beautiful peaks are all well over 5,000m. A breathtaking moment at this point in the journey; already we'd crossed several 4,000m+ passes on dirt road to reach the Wakhan Corridor. Shopping on a Tuesday afternoon in Murghab. The bazaar is a series of shipping containers packed with supplies, mostly from China. Thankfully, biscuits and sweets are readily available. We walked a long while in the baking sun to make this photograph. This is the tallest statue of Lenin in Central Asia. See the tiny man dressed in black? He looks so tiny right? Yeh, that's how big Lenin is. Huge. And those pink plinths. The M41 is a spectacular road. One of the best of the trip so far. This shot was taken on the decent from Ala-Bell pass, 3,175m climb between Bishkek and Osh. This guy is warning motorists about the flock of oncoming sheep.
