happy 7/7 byler day!
predictions on chapter 13 of ttmd; ttms basically, at the party Mike is going to realize that, in fact, we live in a society
while still sober, maaaaybe he'll see that the behaviors he'd been having towards will (even though he still wants very much so to be close and and whisper and touch yadayadayada), they do seem odd for friends in public.
because they'd been doing all this advances in their own bubble, secluded from almost everyone but eachother for the summer. but that's not going to last forever. and he'll realize.
they'll be going to college. Will will be surrounded by other people. other guys. guys that, unlike Mike, Will would want to kiss.
maybe he'll remember their previous conversation on how it won't change things between them (or something like that) and how Will didn't quite answer that time. he'll realize that when Will finds a boyfriend, one that unlike mike he'll want to kiss, they'll have to stop (because obviously Will is getting a boyfriend because he is objectively a very kissable and dateable person). and that is going to crush him a little A LOT maybe maybe he'd realize he feels nauseous at the prospect of will being that way with someone else. or maybe the realization's chasing him, but denial's faster. in which he'll stay very jealous and grumpy and he'll get drunk which i guess it'll lead to a small fight between mike and will (and from will's pov. he'll get angry too and more mixed-signals because mike's complaints aren't making any sense). don't think it'll be too big though (maybe they even fix themselves in the same chapter). (or maybe both. both is good) would this mean mike will also realize what this implies? that he's in love with his best friend? knowing him, I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't happen until yet next chapters either (might be in having a conversation with max and/or dustin or lucas). would he take this deadline as motivation to make the most of it while he can and for them to go all the way? or would he be so miserable they'd stop intercourse until they figure it out? we'll see.
fun scenario bonus: lucas and dustin keep teasing Will trying to find out who 'his boyfriend' is pointing at every dude that looks interested. and mike gets progressively angrier and wants to scream 'I'M RIGHT HERE' and wait did he just call himself will's boyfriend?
UPDATE ON HOW MUCH I GOT WRONG (spoilers of ch13 of ttmd;ttms ahead)
close enough future college's crippling anxiety topic ✅ I guess I underestimated Mike's power of avoiding self-realizations (still think it's gonna happen, just draaagged up until the end) ((i love that))
HE SAID IT, different context, BUT HE EFFING SAID IT, LET'S GOOO also knew Dustin was gonna at least tease will about who his boyfriend was
i love that the set-up's perfect for a lumax intervention and so um... going all the way it is

the moles on cleric will's back actually making real constellations and when you tap on the in the correct way they all glow like the night sky
that is cute, but now I can't stop picturing shirtless cleric will bored af because he was expecting horny time, but then paladin mike is like "wait WAIT, I almost got it" just tapping like he needs to find the correct order of a videogame combo

I said this a while ago, but when vol. 1 came out I had this feeling that they'd belittled Mike's grief for Eddie for the sake of plot contrivance. Thinking that I understood they'd placed it solely on Dustin as if leaving space for Mike's own emotional arc (girl, LITTLE DID I KNOW). However, I thought it would be a really interesting premise for a fic. Then vol. 2 and 3 came along and... that happened.
So, I finally assembled the courage to write it!
It starts after Will and Mike (being the DM) unknowingly flirt with each other in a campaign, but since it happens through female NPCs Lucas takes notice of it and asks Will about it. Mike gets jealous (of himself) and things escalate.
It's also a mwtfdyd fic, set in 18 months timeskip mild semi-apocalyptic Hawkins. I wanted to take the opportunity to explore the Party's feelings towards DnD as a game after Eddie's death (about Mike's grief but also as a gateway to his inner turmoil) and overall dynamics in a stress-inducing apocalypse. Mainly character-focused.
In case anyone may be interested.
Other topics that may or may not show up include:
post-season4 core 4 dynamics
dnd as love language (or smth I'LL TRY)
Will and Jane wondertwins kinda bond (and WillElMike status)
post-season4 Jane's journey
Suzie's acknowledgement in Dustin's grief period
Will and Hopper parent-son relationship (I swear they didn't make the effort)
byers-wheeler household dynamics; platonic crossed bylers (Jonathan-Mike; Nancy-Will; Holly-Will; etc.)
emphasis on familial-platonic dynamics in general
Jonathan's parentification and jancy's role (if I can squirm it)
Platonic elmike
...
I have more stuff that I'd like to include plus my take on some -gates, but I don't want to spoil the BIG things.
I'd also like to inquire if you'd like me to post about uploads here? I'd gathered the names of people who once said they might have been interested, but please tell me whether I shall include or delete people to the list:

Guys. A Christmas Carol style fic, but with epilogue Mike. (about closeted-ness and internalized homophobia instead of greed) (and it doesn't have to be set in Christmas either) Epilogue followup. Mike stays at home while the rest go to the party they were invited to. First comes Marley Eddie and wakes him with his guitar. Talks to him and has a speech about you know: forced conformity, that's what's killing the kids. Ghost of not-necessarily-Christmas Past goes through a lot of cute miwi and early Mike's exposure to homophobia (news, his dad, neighboorhood gossip... whatever). And maybe snippets around seasons 3-4 or, even 5. Ghost of not-necessarily-Christmas Present shows Will and the Party at Stacey's that same night without him. Will meets a guy and at first he hesitates ('cause of Mike), but they end up flirting/making out. (perhaps he also sees rovickie?) Ghost of not-necessarily-Christmas Yet to Come shows Will accompanied by his epilogue boyfriend/husband grieving him after he (Mike) jumped of the quarry. At the end he wakes up and has the opportunity to graduate again. He runs to smooch find Will. I don't know who the ghosts would be though, what do you think? Maybe... different iterations of himself? Like, I just wanna have season 1-2 Mike as the ghost of the Past interact with present Mike, to the point of wanting to punch him like What do you mean we did that to Will? What is wrong with you? Why do we look like Mr. Wheeler? What have you done? xd Maybe Present could be Robin?? And Jane could be Future (as in, be true to yourself, I may not have a future, but you still can conversation)? Like, taking the advantage of not-exactly-knowing what happened to her and what her future looks like (if she even got one), but her telling Mike how a decision impacts him, his ending and the people around him, and how Mike is in that same position. And also having her reassurance about him and Will and that she knew about them back in season 4. Let me know what y'all think. kinda unrelated, but inspired by this post
I wanted to list some conformitygate fic ideas I thought would be cool. I don't know if they'd fit all together tho (sorry, LONG post): Mike noticing something's off:
- Mike starts questioning the reality because he notices Will's eyes aren't the right shade (inspired by a comment that said that in the epilogue they looked more brown instead of green-ish) - Mike visits Jane/El's grave and finds someone that's also grieving a loved one. They talk. The conversation leads to Mike unveiling even more weird connections/parallels. btw That person is Patty Newby (or well, the figment of Henry's memories that resembles her) - Mike gathers everyone and starts pointing to them every inconsistency he has found (like, how El's ending is a copypaste of what happened back in season 1, how is Hopper back in chief, how did the military just disappear). I picture him going something like: "Max, how are you walking back again?" "That's because I did a sh*t ton of rehabilitation *sshole." "Yeah I know, but then how did you have enough time left to catch up at school and graduate on time?" And either they brush him off or maybe some of them think about it like Joyce and/or Jonathan and others don't and feel worried about him, or maybe they all try to gaslight him (I'd have to decide if in this scenario all of them are being under Vecna's control or is it just him or maybe everyone but Will...). Mike escapes: So, for this one, I have several alternatives. - So, first scenario is obviously him going through his own traumatizing memories to find the exit. Realizing that Vecna has been sneaking way before he thought, like season 3 rainfight or season 4 or even before that (and addressing season's 5 insomnia, and visions, etc.). Making him revisit older memories (like cliff jumping/will's body discovery) and offscreen past of homophobia from when he was a child (and/or internalized homophobia when writing the letters). And this has to happen at some point (like we've been CRAVING for his pov. and I need him to suffer). BUT, I also kind of don't want this to happen. Or I want this to happen, but Vecna catches him and sends him back to square 1 vision (fixing the "mistakes", but Mike doesn't give in because Will's eyes are still not right and then he finds more inconsistencies so he didn't dream it all). Then, I present you this other scenario... - Mike goes through the signal tower (where the color of the dial changed, I think it could be a cool callback to the signals, the path being literally starting at the antenna) and enters the memory-maze, but it's not Vecna/Henry's trauma memories (or Mike-memories in which Vecna was lurking). It's Will's memories. Cute, loving memories and it's basically (or mostly) them together (which is when Mike realizes he's really trapped because the extent of moments between the two of them all over the years is eternal and it's going to be almost impossible to find the exit) And it's perhaps an opportunity to let Mike find out/piece together the fact that Will has feelings for him? Or maybe Mike realizing how much their lives are intertwined leading to him having a realization about his own feelings? Anyhow, at the end he reaches the last stage before the gate to his body (perhaps music, perhaps a clue in Patty's previous conversation, perhaps a voice calling for him "wake up") but it's not Vecna's red-cave mindscape. It's a beautiful fantasy-landscape, almost as if taken from a painting (because it's Will's bridge to the world, not Vecna's and that's why he is able to escape without him noticing/stopping him). - At some point, I think it'd be cool for him to bump into some weird memories. That being some Will-Henry memories merged together (although he might not clock it until he's out, when he figures the birthday omission thing, having seen the date in the graveyard? and remembering). Perhaps he could encounter Holly/Max/the other kids/someone that is escaping/hiding in Henry's memories (and they are able to meet because as I said some of them are merged). Or maybe they can see/talk to one another, but they can't actually physically surpass the "barrier" between them.
Mike waking up: For this I also have several alternatives (because it'd really depend on which version of the events that lead into Mike getting Vecna'd played out) - Mike wakes up. He's at the hospital and sees 1 person. Vickie. She has been the one taking care of him (or them if there are more people involved) because no other nurse wants to (because of his/their relationship to Will, using it as confirmation of Will/their gang to blame for the "satanic curse", thinking that they have aids?? and could be a cool addition how a queer woman is taking care of them?). She tells him about the demodogs' attack on the hospital looking for Max (that's why she knows and believes the Upside Down), but that at the last moment they simply run, meaning it was a trap or a distraction. And then how everyone went into a trance (or maybe only the ones closest to Will and involved in the memories of him his powers so Robin, Joyce, Jonathan and Mike; maybe it's just him and Will idk). Hopper, Joyce and Kali are still missing (hiding in the UD, probably). Or maybe she doesn't know and has to experience something with Mike to believe him (like El using her powers or another attack or something). - As for the rest of the characters, I don't know. It's hard to believe that they'd stay still and make no progress or plan while Mike's out (like, there's too many people for the plot to be static and make sense meanwhile). So, option 1 is just easier to knock them all. Although then, you'd have to come up with a proper explanation for how is Vecna capable of that (maybe that's why he wanted the 12 kids in the first place? to be able to create and sustain one or multiple worlds for 12 people?) and if it was in fact his plan, how is it that he still hasn't won (that probably has to do with Will or El or both). Then it's only Mike and Vickie and they have to make a plan together (like he tells her about the power of music and love maybe she is able to bring Robin back in case everyone is knocked out). Mike has to lead them out. - If it is just Mike, I picture it as being more of an accident. Like, Mike was Vecna's target, but something went wrong (or I guess right for them?) and it ended on a stand-by situation (kids still missing, Mike and Will knocked out, or Mike knocked out/Will taken again, but the world hasn't ended yet and it's Vecna's re-building his plan slowly to strike again). I'd expand on this a couple of points down... - Maybe a blend of both. Mike has to lead some characters out (Jonathan/Joyce/Robin) to bring Will back with the help of the rest.
Will's role in all of this: - I'd really want to dive into Will's implication as a vital piece of the puzzle. Why was he chosen? Well, Henry and the Mindflayer were looking for a target. The Mindflayer wanted someone easy to access (aka traumatized). Henry wanted someone that reminded him of himself. That's how they found Will. But there's something more. They needed someone with the gift of creation. Someone creative, able to depict worlds to hide in (aka an abused child likely to develop maladaptative daydreaming due to escaping his father). Will is the Upside Down's creator. And that is also why Mike could be partially considered co-creator (and storyteller), because Will's imaginary comes from listening to Mike's stories. E. g. how in season 1 the demogorgon was attracted to blood and is vulnerable to fire when Mike's campaign starts with "something's coming, something hungry for blood" and to weaken him Will has to cast fireball (I really really like this persons take even though it's old). Like, if the Mindflayer is in fact in another dimension and they need a bridge, they need to find someone to create that bridge/that world. Because they don't possess that power. As we'd seen Vecna's powers include telekinesis, finding people, entering minds/memories (that El also has) and creating mind illusions (that Kali has). Nothing about reality-invention. That's why they needed Will. In fact, maybe that is how Vecna is keeping Mike in this not-fully-based-on-memories-from-the-past-but-visions-from-the-future-Truman-bubble with all those real-life-person-resembling-NPCs that Mike can interact with, using Will as a vessel for it (and maybe that is also why he is unable to directly harm him, because it's through Will and he's subconsciously protecting him, but I'll elaborate on this later). It would also explain why he is being called "sorcerer" instead of "warlock". - So the timeline would be. Will unlocks his powers through his relationship with his loved ones so he targets Mike (or maybe +Joyce/Jonathan). Maybe Will comes out to Mike in private and that triggers Vecna to act (because he knows byler canon would put him in a vulnerable position). (Him sending the demos after Max might be a distraction). He shows Will Mike being Vecna'd. Either Will reaches his powers to shield him (Will casts protection) or accepts to help/let them use him in exchange for sparing Mike's life. Because Henry cannot create reality like Will, but he can alter minds. And he is merging his and Will's mind (birthdaygate, melvaldsmilkshakegate, gettinglostinthewoodsgate xd). Therefore by making Will's reality HIS, he'd be able to CREATE/SHAPE THE WORLD AS HE WANTS IT (or the Mindflayer, maybe it's the mastermind behind it all). Severing the connections to the ones that can reach out to him, as they found out in season 2, by erasing the birthday. But, turns out Mike's bond with him is still VERY strong (also with El, he'd probably want to take advantage of her as well). So he has to pull a trick up his sleeve and he does as written. And, side effect, by saving Mike from the Vecna's vision, Mike ends up trapped in this world. Which is a two birds with one stone plan for Vecna. Because he has used Mike to get to Will (both unlocking Will's potential and blackmailing him, then using him for his own benefit) and has used Will to trap Mike, when he knows that Mike is the key to get to Will thus thwart his plans. And to top it all from Will's pov it doesn't look like Mike is miserable (at the end is the story Mike tells/writes himself, everyone's happy, mike is in love with el as expected, they get to play DnD on the basement as they said), but Vecna knows it is Mike's hell (and a personal win for being a pain in the *ss).
- I'd also like to add a new dimension to Will's powers. That being the power of empathy. That's why Vecna can access him and Will can access Vecna's powers. That's why not only he sees through but he feels the hivemind's pain (you could argue that's why the demo-monsters ARE a hivemind, why they can have personality like Dart, why they ALL FEEL what each one of them feel, since Will created it). Also, imagine the potential of Will using that power AGAINST the antagonists. Kali and El helping Will to defeat Vecna and Will helping El and Kali with Dr. Kay/the military (wondertwins, you could become SO MUCH).
I think that's all. I don't feel I'd be able to turn all this into a fully-fleshed fic (specially since I'd want it to make sense chronologically and I'll have to order the events of volume2-3 in my mind to choose what did happen and where exactly it diverges and I really DON'T want to rewatch that again) and some of my ideas are contradictory. And I'd have to figure what El and Kali are doing meanwhile. And try to make sense of Henry/the Mindflayer's plan each season. Like, what exactly did they want Will for back then? What was their original plan? What did they change? What's their plan now? But I wanted to spell the thoughts.
If someone wants to take inspo from this, feel free (and tag me, please)

E. g. how in season 1 the demogorgon was attracted to blood and is vulnerable to fire when Mike's campaign starts with "something's coming, something hungry for blood" and to weaken him Will has to cast fireball (I really really like this persons take even though it's old).
(continuation in a reblog)
here they said "i love you" to each other. #trust
"I didn't say it" "You didn't have to"
Lowkey loving how conformitygate totally shifted the conversation from Is Eleven (Jane) actually dead or is she alive? Like, from the interviews they've given, they were probably expecting that to be the discourse after the finale and that there would be debate about it. And that they'd be asked about it (maybe they thought they'd feel proud and praised for how clever they were for such a nuanced and brilliant ending)
And then BOOM, everyone starts talking about how the finale was so bad it had to be FAKE and a Vecna vision and nobody cares about that dead-or-alive dilemma they were trying to hype (with the whole, only Millie knows this, and we have told her not to tell Noah yadayadayada).
And the fact that it started in the byler fandom.
I stand for what I said. Byler cannot be described as queerbait. Because it ain't a bait, it's a mass fishing net. It'd had to be called queerfraud or querrobbery. A queerfelony, if you will. They have no explanation for failing to deliver closure to the past offered set-up (plus bringing SO many new plotholes). It wasn't about byler hope or byler doubt. Not anymore. It was about byler trust, that the creators would follow through and byler disapointment of how they would handle it. They couldn't even shut it off properly (with the whole 'up to interpretation' and closeted-conformity-coding of the ending). We did not get to see a proper heart to heart confession followed by a rejection. And no, that 'best friends' line does not count because heck, we weren't shown if Mike knows that he was in fact Will's current 'crush' (I don't even know if they have cleared that up explicitly in an interview, which btw, wouldn't count either, storytellingwise) and that by saying that, he meant it as a rejection. (Actually, it would be way more cruel to joke in character with that dramatic pause after "No thanks", if he knew that Will still had feelings for him at the moment so I wanna believe he doesn't) All of which I found gross because they have figured out the perfect balance of leaving enough room to keep the engagement of people's closet-readings of Mike's character feeding mainly offstage material, with the safeguard of not confirming anything outright for the GA. (Basically, they found a way to keep what has been happening but beyond the very end) Though I guess you can also take a victory from this: they also could not make up a way of tying up the plot with a resolution that felt earned and overall satisfactory without addressing byler's role in Mike's character arc. Like, it's so ingrained in the narrative that the moment volumes 2-3 trail away from how these characters usually interact makes the audience think that it just feels off (and even the straight version of it cannot beat the 'Good luck, babe' allegations). The fact they misconstrued SO many more things as well leaving flagrant inconsistencies. Whose fault is that. It's proof of how poor their understanding of the show is (or their lack of effort to achieve the closure it deserves through such lazy writing).
At least, we still got the Will-getting-his-powers-from-gay-self-acceptance-arc and Robin's speech (volume 1 PEAKED). At least he was alive at the end. At least no gays were buried, yay! (I guess your level of content depends on how low your bar is) (Edit: I changed my mind, because they buried Mike so deep in the closet it deserves a proper funeral. Either that or they are accidentally paralleling season 1, having the Party witness the burial after the brutal hate crime character-assassination of Mike's (and Jane's) character) Maybe in the future we will get a better grasp on what happened behind the scenes to make them stir from the original plan (There is NO WAY that byler endgame wasn't intended given the direction for season 4 and its ending, the fact that they talked about jancy's breakup as an afterthought also points to that. And even for season 5 volume 1. In fact, it seems to be common understanding that's exactly when the episodes went off). How could anyone design a ploy this cartoonishly evil to deceit the byler audience purposefully for years like 'a mastermind' and then come up with such a stupid weak alternative for the ending? Can both things happen to be thought by the same people? What happened bts for this to change so suddenly and clumsily?
So, congratulations! You haven't being queerbaited, only queermislead and queerdefrauded! In my book, the most 'baity' thing they are absolutely guilty of is dragging the lack of explicit mileven during season 5 up until the very very end. Like, mileven was severely ill-treated too in expense. No build-up. No addressing where they left. No acknowledgement of the issues brought up. No resolution. It looks like they waited to spit in Jane's arc by centering it around how it impacted Mike. And for what? THAT was queerbaity. But, the rest of the series? Nah 'Cause it wasn't simply 'a bait'. But. A. Mass. Fishing. Net. Edit2: Eating up ambiguous epilogue byler and/or conformitygate Mike. It's canon. It happened off-screen.
I've made up my mind. They definitely have time to accomplish Byler. And, as I said in another post, most of the character dynamics and arcs have already been tackled and resolved (Steve-Dustin, Jonathan-Nancy, Lucas-Max, even Joyce-Hopper...). They've cleared the path so they can focus on what's left: Mike, Will and El (and Henry/Vecna) Will and El (and kinda Henry/Vecna) have had their conflicts laid out. Mike's on the other hand has been kept under wraps. His lack of a role this second half of the season is way too prominent not to be deliberate. Like, we've managed to develop (at least) one emotional turmoil that tightens and eventually leads to a cathartic moment for every character EXCEPT for this one. We have also stated in an interview that we wanted to send the message of "accepting yourself is way more important; regardless of what the person you love feels back, even if it doesn't work out" and we are going to proceed to talk (sloppily) about unrequited crushes, but we have made sure NOT to show a rejection that would help us convey that was what we were aiming for Will's arc. (They directly compare it to putting out the message of "It’ll all be right if this secret crush you have works out". And how could this scenario even be a possibility to pop in their mind if they know that Mike definitely doesn't reciprocate Will's feelings in the first place? Why would they ponder over this specific lesson as something the audience might take out of the story if Will doesn't get the boy in the end?) In fact, we have made sure you are not going to see Mike's perspective on this. And turns out that results in not showing ANYTHING about him at all.
(Interesting... I wonder what could possibly be in store for him...) Oh! By the way, in that same interview we avoided to talk about Mike and Will's dynamic by completely dodging the question! (in case you haven't noticed i've tried to use irony to make a point) Plus all the other hints gathered and the textual inquiry in the show to look out for signals... (I don't believe in coincidences, not anymore) It's looking good for a byler endgame, isn't it? Does it drag plausible deniability until the very end for the sake of a plot twist? Yeah. Could that give the impression of sounding a little bit 'queerbaity'? Absolutely. I know, it's a shame that they haven't had explicit development like the rest of the couples. It's a pity, really. But... do you know what that means? They'll have to make up for lost time.
Imagine the finale of one of the TV shows OF THE TIME being a Mike-centered and, most significantly, a BYLER-centered episode. The first episode that is going to be premiered on the big screen, mind you. I can get behind that. Let me remind you of... "That's wrong. It should be yellow" says Holly while CRASHING a BLUE tile at the merry-go-round. Hot take?: binge-watching and out-of-the-story-speculation hopes have really altered our perception of volume 2. It wasn't bad, only unfinished.
Maybe we should stick to what this fandom has been known for doing best: in-show-analysis. And remember. You aren't being queerbaited. Because if so, we cannot classify everything as merely 'a bait', but a mass fishing net.
They would have no explanation for failing to deliver closure to the current offered set-up. It could be considered as queerfraud.
Please. Stay safe.
Hey so this hasn't happened yet
OH MY GOODNESS This takes place AFTER Will's coming-out. THIS is Mike Wheeler AFTER knowing Will likes boys. That is how he LOOKS LIKE after REALIZING Will has had a CRUSH on HIM.
I'm so ready.
Inside joke I see
Volume 2 doesn't doom Byler, but it does condition its execution (a comprehensive rant)
I don't think the release of volume 2 has done anything to let us think Byler won't be endgame.
However, I do think it has cemented the writing is not taking the audacious approach.
And, I also think we have the right to be upset and comment on the interview regardless of the true intentions towards the ending because wow
Bear with me.
There was nothing IN THE SHOW to disprove or recontextualize previous evidence. The most we could argue about is the lack thereof. Which is the same amount we had before its release (that being Mike's pov.).
And actually, since the fandom went spiraling into collective meltdown (which, fair enough, we'll get to that) I haven't seen that many people looking up closely on clues we DO might have gotten. Like, Mike and Robin's dialog about records (they made a point of it being it audible enough amongst everything else that was happening it got subtitled). Or how they had Max reinforcing the idea that love can break you out of Vecna's control and how she felt Lucas' hands (Does it sound familiar? Maybe... how about when Will broke the Mindflayer's influence through the hand Mike had held back in season 2?). Or how Mike was wearing a camouflage print through the coming-out scene, something meant for hiding.
The closest we have to a 'byler rebuttal' is Will saying to the group it's 'just a crush' or assuming 'Mike's his Tammy', but then again. He is unreliable.
He also thought that he could not control the hive mind until he figured out he could. As the rest of the characters.
Nobody possesses the whole truth. Just as Max thought El was the one who saved them at the cave (while the audience knew that wasn't true, but from her pov. there was nothing that could lead her to think otherwise). Or as the different units of the gang had different pieces of information around the supernatural puzzle with wrong details in each theory until they shared all their perspectives (and I'm pretty sure there's probably still a bigger picture that hasn't been revealed).
So no, Byler isn't off the table yet. BUT, it is quite telling on where their priorities stand by selecting to take this particular direction. A decision that involves denying both the characters and the audience more screen time of them as a couple (just as Robin and Vickie's played out off-screen). Or at least, to have both of them explicitly pining for each other, letting the audience know they have the potential to be a couple and allowing some time to readjust to this new angle before the finale (eg. making clear to the audience that there is a very real possibility of Mike liking Will back and ending up on a cliffhanger of whether they'll be able to make it).
A decision that drags the resolution (and dare I say evolution) of Mike's character arc because we simply cannot know what's happening inside him. Because we are being kept in the dark ON PURPOSE. Either that, or Mike just turned into an emotional wooden plank in the season he was supposed to carry substantial 'emotional weight'.
A decision that fuels mockery and the capacity to call byler shippers delusional until the very end.
And for what? For the sake of making a risky revolutionary plot twist? I'm telling you what that would be: having two main male characters canonically in love with one another spending time on screen together in one of THE mainstream shows of the time.
Honestly, I think they might be shooting themselves in the foot. Because the people that won't think that it 'came out of nowhere' are the ones they are letting down (aka the byler fandom). They might also be exposing the community to be the target of even more harassment when byler becomes canon, as if bylers are at any fault of pressuring or brainwashing the creators to go for a 'forced' ending
And that could be the concerning part on itself.
Secondly. About that interview... yikes
Then again, I don't think they disproved Byler entirely. They could have, but they didn't. And they even might have had no malice or intent of coming out thatway.
Nevertheless, they ARE responsible for the words used in their explanations. Of what they said, what they didn't say and how they said it.
They CHOSE to answer a byler related question leaning towards the shipping side of it. About it "not being a thing when they were young" (which then again is b*llsh*t, Spirk historians would be ashamed). They might as well be talking about the love-triangle-frenzy of Mileven against Byler, or Jancy against Stancy (a bit hypocritical given the fact that they themselves fanned the flames with Steve's character direction this season and the marketing department has sure taken the chance for profit). Reducing the byler phenomenon to a mere shallow whim of "who ends up with who". Which tells me the DB don't really know the byler side of the fandom because I haven't seen any other shipping community so invested on subtext, clues, subversion of character archetypes and narratives, film intentionality, and overall appreciation for detail provided by the work and effort of the crew. Wanting to really understand and enjoy the show from an analyst perspective.
(Which, btw makes the "I have not seen anyone get the ending correct" comment to be reconsidered... because... where exactly are they looking?). They might have also chosen not to talk about their dynamic and avoid the subject entirely because of it being spoiler (further proving the possibility of byler being canon), but they still chose to say everything else the way they did anyway.
Meanwhile, they chose NOT to address the inherent homophobia inside the Stranger Things fandom, both against the byler audience and towards Will as a character.
They chose NOT to talk about the 'bury your gays' trope and how the community has been neglected by media time and time again.
And they CHOSE to compare Jancy's situation with Byler which... I don't even know what to make of it at this point.
I think there is a point in stating that accepting yourself, regardless of whether your crush loves you back in itself is powerful.
BUT, relating the 'unrequited straight teen crush' experience with queer identity acceptance its CLEARLY not the way of expressing it. If you want to see a truly strong take on this statement, I would deeply suggest to read this post, as it brilliantly explains it (way better than the Duffers):
💬 12 🔁 53 ❤️ 341 · I just got it. Why it was important for us to not know about Mike yet. It was for Will's story, his message, in this f
Also, equating 'you don't need your crush to accept yourself' with 'he comes out to everyone and their mother' rubs me the wrong way. And I thought we had already done that arc in volume 1.
Specially the wording of it as a 'secret', and the kind of implication of it being 'something that needs to be shared with the world'. 'Cause, no. You don't owe that information to anyone. But I might be nitpicking with this one.
Like, sure. Having accepted oneself and being confident enough to speak about it it's not the same thing.
However. Even if they are willing to dedicate two separate arcs to Will's queerness - one for his self acceptance and the other for his self confidence, even though this second one had a way weaker development - why neglect Mike's? Doesn't his internalized homophobia and potential comphet also deserve progression over the episodes? Doesn't it deserve proper addressing and payoff? As I said earlier, it hinders his arc whether they go the queer route or not (and if they don't it's even worse).
Sidenote. I still don't know how to feel about the coming-out scene. Sure, it was awkward. But maybe that's just projection? Just like some people felt like Mike was uncomfortable with Will flirting because they were uncomfortable? I truly don't know how to assess this scene.
(And I guess this is confirmation that Will is, in fact, the bravest character on the series. Because who else would have THE BALLS to come out to a room full of people in the 80s, some of them he is not even close with. Anyway.)
So yeah, the interview sucks. Words can hurt, even if they are moved by carelessness instead of maliciousness.
Ending on a more positive note, I want to list whose character arc (or character dynamics) volume 2 did resolve:
Steve and Dustin (+Dustin grieving arc by proxy)
Jancy
Jopper (romantic and parental)
Max escape
Lumax reunion
Will's self acceptance and powers
And now I'd like to list what hasn't been resolved yet:
Mike. Anything (himself and his relationship in regard to Holly, El, Will... whoever)
Jane's resolution (and by extension Hopper and Kali's)
Will's relationship with Vecna/Upside Down/Mindflayer
Henry's relationship with the Vecna/the Mindflayer And...that's pretty much it. It seems like a lot, but the finale is the length of a movie.
Jancy's resolution took 5 minutes. Byler doesn't need much build-up, it only needs addressing/recontextualization and payoff. And to prove this I exhibit this less-than-5-minutes-video-montage (it is great btw, big shoutout).
It is still possible, but it is going to be more difficult for them to pull it off in a satisfactory way. I genuinely don't know how they'd figure it out. Who knows. They might surprise us all in the end. For the record. Byler is canon (it's been established and it hasn't been debunked). Still, we can question the writing choices (and interview responses apparently).
It isn't about byler hope or byler doubt. Not anymore. It's about byler trust and byler disapointment.
It isn't even about queerbaiting. Because it ain't a bait, it's a mass fishing net. It'd be queerfraud.
Please. Whatever happens. Take care.
