We have another victory for the people. Spar Liquor, right next to the Auto Zone & across from the 7/11 on South Capitol has had their renewal application dismissed. I led the protest of this license on behalf of Advisory Neighborhood Commission 8C @ANC8C. This store has been selling alcohol to minors and contributing to the destruction of our community. Thank you to everyone has signed our petition, helped us rally, canvass the neighborhood, and advocate to the Police Chief & the Mayor. Our commission did the research and found that the Police Chief could deem an establishment is harmful, causes immediate danger to the community and close it down for a maximum of 96 hours. After that, the Alcohol Control Board must have hearing & make a ruling. When I initially campaigned for commissioner, I was asked what would I do to address the intersection of Malcolm X & Martin Luther King. I didn’t make any promises other than to do my best. Over the past few years I have facilitated the following: the streets repaved potholes fixed street signs fixed broken utility wires fixed multiple community clean ups fed the homeless registered people to vote and honestly that still wasn’t enough. When ABRA notified me that the license for Mart Liquors was up for renewal, I knew that this could be a major break through. It’s not the only answer or the best answer. However, it is a start in the right direction of cleaning this community up. The struggle is not over. The war is still happening. This is just one battle and it’s a small victory, but we will take it. I know many will try to give me the credit, however the credit belongs to all of the residents who haven’t given up and who kept the faith. 🙏🏿 To that I say, thank you all! One of the reasons I organized to became a commissioner was to protect and defend the Black Community against the internal violence that adversely impacts us. I didn’t think 30 years ago watching this scene of “Boyz in the Hood” would prove to be so accurate. This is why art is so important. It can inspire a generation of activists. Holiday Liquors is one of the many liquor establishments in our community that have been found to sell liquor to minors multiple times. It invites gun violence that has led to multiple deaths. We must organize to remove these types of establishments from our community. Per the DC Health Equity Report: “The stressors of living in neighborhoods with inadequate access to economic and educational opportunities has been flagged as indicative of trauma at the community level. Reduced community safety in the District is correlated with gaps in health-promoting community resources. A love letter to my Brothers. Over 30 years ago at the Higher Achievement Program our divine destiny crossed paths. For some of us, even before then. Initially our love for Basketball 🏀 kept us together. As time went on, our love for brotherhood, family, genuine friendship and fatherhood kept us going. In addition to all of what has been previously stated, now in our own unique ways, our love for seeing youngins in the community strive to higher heights has cemented us. In this time we’ve never fought over money, women, or gossip. We’ve differently fought over video games, basketball and the last wing. 😂 We’ve watched each other graduate high school & college, get married, make families, helped each other move, get elected, win championships, attend funerals for each other’s family members, get money together, travel across the country together. It’s a miracle and a blessings to know we’ve gone from sleepers on weekends with big bowls of cereal to full grown men. And we have supported each other along the way. Seeing my brothers come together to honor another brothers marriage is a privilege I do not take likely. I’m honored and blessed to have brothers that also see the value of this moment in time. On International Women's Day I would like to shout out Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela aka Winnie Mandela. She was one of the best to ever do it. She was mos def about that life. A mother, a political prisoner, a wife, a leader and most of all a committed soldier in the fight for freedom, justice and equality. She did time in the hole, solitary confinement, for 17 months. She was beaten by the police, had her home raided and banned by the south african government. She stood on the front lines against apartheid and had to face the entire weight of real life colonizers. Through it all, she managed to get multiple degrees, take care of not only her children, but children who lost their parents due to police and state terrorism.
