i love that scene when lucas teases mike about having "i love you el, would you marry me?" eyes so i thought i'd ask if you have any headcanons about the party teasing them how much in love they are after they start dating? all in good fun and affection of course, never mercilessly
i LOVE that scene (i hope it’s foreshadowing more than anything else but anyWAYS):
the party decides that a week after el’s return is an appropriate amount of time of waiting before teasing mike about being so in love with el that he called her every night for almost an entire year (“wow, michael. we had no idea you were such a romantic!!” “do you guys ever shut up?!”)
every time he says he can’t hang out because he’s going to call el or go visit her or something, they call him “romeo” to piss him off (it works)Â
at the snowball mike and el announce that they’re officially boyfriend/girlfriend and the party’s just like “wait, i thought you guys have been dating since last year” “yeah, that’s why mike called you so much, he was being a good boyfriend!” “i can not believe you guys kissed before becoming official! mike, you dog!” and mike would very much punch all of them if el wasn’t holding onto his hand
mike is a really attentive and considerate boyfriend and of course the party knows this but they still try to make fun of him when he says how he’s saving up money to buy el a gift or mike tells them about the, what they would call “chick flick”, he went to go see with her during the weekend (“you are so fucking whipped!!” “yeah, well, at least i have a girlfriend”)
the party realizes quickly though that teasing el isn’t as fun as teasing mike because she never gets embarrassed about anything!!!
max will try and tease el saying things like “so, when’s the wedding?” and el will seriously reply with “not for a long time. mike says we have to wait to finish school and get jobs-” “OH MY GOD, EL, STOP”
or el will be staring at mike during a d&d campaign or class and dustin will catch her and try to make fun of her by putting his chin in the palm of his hands and sighing dramatically and saying “isn’t mike so dreamy?” and el won’t even catch his sarcasm, she just smiles more and sighs and goes “yeah”
it’s a little weird for will to make fun of them though because el’s basically his sister so the most he will do is make teasing comments during dinner like hopper will ask them how school was and will says “oh, el had a very good day! she looked so happy when i saw her after lunch! remember el? when i asked you about your smudged lipstick?” and she’ll kick his shin under the table
despite all the teasing, the party really is happy that mike and el are togetherÂ
even though they all make gagging noises and scream things like “MY EYES” when they kiss in front of them or they all collectively roll their eyes when el rests her head on mike’s shoulder, they know that mike and el literally went through hell and back to be together, and it makes them happy to see their friends happy. especially when they know there is not a chance “those two crazy kids” (“shut up, dustin!”) won’t make it
and that is why they all also have a secret bet going on about when they’ll get married
