The idea that every medical professional guaranteed the covid vaccine would offer complete immunity is on its face absurd. I'd be surprised if you could find me one example of an individual medical professional saying that, and you certainly couldn't find a reputable medical organisation that made that claim.

I like to tell pro aborts that I'll answer their question once they've answered mine.

Similar scenario but instead of a baby its a white man who is completely healthy outside the fact he can not walk and needs a wheelchair.

And instead of embryos its a black man in a coma, he was in a terrible accident and must stay on life support. He's expected to have a good change of survival and to retain full functionality if he stays on life support, for lets say 9 months, but if you remove him now he will die in seconds.

You must move fast to not get burned, so you only have time to save one and since you are going down stairs you can't take the wheelchair or other medical equipment.

So are you racist or ableist?

Because clearly if you pick the white guy in the chair that must mean you hate black people and think their lives are worthless.

But if you pick the black able-bodied man that means you think people with disabilities are worthless.

Right?

Suddenly its a silly scenario that doesn't mean anything.

Yeah and suddenly the answer no longer means the person you don’t save you see as lesser and not a real human being.

When they make up the scenario, they demand our answer reflect how we feel about human worth but just flip it around on them - don’t even change the scenario, just the lives at stake - and now that’s not the dilemma at all.

They are disingenuous at their very core and they need their stupidity thrown back at them whenever possible.

To the dumbfuck hate followers in the notes going “bUT iT’s noT PrOPerLY AnaLoGUoUS”: the whole point of the original hypothetical was to be a thought-terminating argument against pro-lifers so the pro-abort creator of it could feel smug over them. He even said as much when he presented it on Twitter. So based on that intent, anon’s hypothetical works as a fine analogue to that one. You just think the original hypothetical is fine because you agree with the creator.

Edit: Though as I think about it, I appreciate the proposed “corrected” hypothetical of making one side have 5000 people on it, because it serves to further lampoon the original pro-abort hypothetical by requiring an explanation as to how you can save the 5000 of one group in time but somehow not save the 1 in the other group. Maybe that’s a big reason why the original hypothetical got shat on!

The point of the original hypothetical was to highlight inconsistency in pro-life stances. If a fetus is morally equivalent to a baby, the asymmetry of 5000:1 should make it an easy instant choice to save the fetuses. But for some reason, people struggle to say that, highlighting that they may not truly consider them morally equivalent.

Hypotheticals do not have to be realistic to be good tools for engaging with ideas. A point being delivered smugly does not make it inherently wrong. After all, you're being smug here.

"Disingenuous" has definitely become the hot new term on conservative Tumblr, I'm seeing it everywhere. And almost never used correctly.

Mostly just AAG and people reblogging from her, to be fair. And it largely seems to come from her just agreeing with whoever is sending the current anon, whether it contradicts something she said yesterday or not.

It remains hilarious to me how she’s the foremost conservative thinker on here. Worth keeping in mind anytime we on the left are told to question our beliefs more. Right wingers fall in lockstep. They do not think or question. It’s a huge part of how they got this far despite not being able to govern worth a damn.

At some level, the constant discourse and discussion over unimportant issues on the left is what really fucks us up. We could use more solidarity and grace with each other.
