'One Year In Mistria'

The theme of this batch was seasons and animals! I put a lot of thought into which characters I picked for these themes. I hope you all like these! 🙇‍♀️ (Let me know if you want the full size versions! They are each 13 x 20 inches.)

Been a while since I did a brand new piece (and a rendered one at that!). I've finally finished the design for Cheri's wedding outfit 🌸 :))

This was a deceptively simple design... for a given definition of 'simple', because while I didn't have to deal with the usual troubles of kimono/hakama structure much and comparatively minimal pattern work, this outfit had so many little details to it.

I wanted to create a design that is the culmination of Cheri's story/character arc so far and the development of her relationship with March. There's quite a lot of references to the point that I have to make a thorough breakdown of the outfit:

Inspirations

This outfit is pretty straightforwardly a western evening tailcoat with cummerbund, fit for black tie events. However, I had to put the usual Taisho Roman spin on it and make the cummerbund a modified women's obi, complete with obiage (sash, the red fabric) and obijime/obidome (decorative cord and brooch).

I've combined masc elements (the tailcoat set, the structure of the shirt) and femme elements (color palette inspired by shiromuku/bridal kimono and the long furisode sleeves) for the basic structure of the suit.

Cheri's hair is kept short so I had some trouble trying to find hairstyles for her! The bun part is actually braided, it's just covered by the kanzashi.

The shoes are, as usual with my historical fashion-inspired designs, based off of two specific Edwardian reproduction shoes by American Duchess (1, 2). I borrowed the more masc structure of the first one and combined it with the French heel and ribbon laces of the second.

The boutonniere is something that just fits right off the bat despite being from a regular Google search. Sometimes it is that simple!

Symbolism

It's not a design of mine if it's not rife with symbolism of some sort. Some of these are centered around Cheri's cultural background, but some are also tied to her relationship with March.

I was today years old during the design process when I found out that Japanese Buddhists do not have their own wedding costume. So I had to incorporate Cheri's Buddhism-inspired background with certain patterns and design elements.

The first one is the pattern on the cummerbund, Seven Treasures linked (Shippo-tsunagi). It represents seven precious materials/treasures of Buddhism, and the interlinking, continuous pattern signifies endless harmony, unbroken bonds, perfection, and eternity. On kimono gifted to a couple, it means wishing them a harmonious life.

The second one is the numerology of the flowers in the kanzashi (hairpins). The flowers come in the auspicious number set of 3-5-7 (three wisteria chains containing 5 silk wisterias each, 7 cherry blossoms), and 8 cherry buds. The latter is specifically synonymous with prosperity and expanding luck (due to the number's shape) and in Buddhism, is the number of the Noble Eightfold Path (practices to liberate oneself from worldly suffering and attain enlightenment).

The sleeve patterns contain the full moon and cherry blossoms; both narratively important symbols to Cheri's story, the former being an element of her Master's crest (which she bears until her marriage), and the latter something more tied to her personally, as cherry blossoms symbolize impermanence and signifies renewal.

As an addition to those two symbols, the pattern also contains river/kawa, which symbolizes continuity and the future. Combined, these symbols pretty much is a title drop of the project: "petals upon the river".

March and Cheri

That's not all, though - some elements, especially the sword and the metal accessories, are related to and made by March! The crest and sword actually have made an appearance in previous art, but the gist of it was that it was created to replace Cheri's heirloom sword, which broke during the events of March's 8-heart event.

Its inclusion is essential to the design of the wedding outfit, because the sword is Cheri's equivalent of an engagement ring (the wedding 'ring' is, in fact, the dagger tucked into Cheri's obi here).

Cheri's heirloom sword has copper plating on the ornaments and handguard, while the new sword has brass instead. Brass is a copper alloy that is harder, stronger, and more corrosion-resistant than copper; this is significant because the old sword (which was very old) broke after being used to strike things its structure isn't meant to withstand, on top of more than a century of wear and tear.

The brass element is incorporated into the kanzashi set as well, which March made. The flowers are made of Mistril and silver, and I specifically wanted Cheri to wear metal flowers as a call-back to these dialogue lines from March:

Cheri appreciates natural forms rendered in inorganic or 'dead' material (hence her hobby of carving wooden birds and bugs). I can appreciate the irony of rendering a flower known for its ephemerality in nigh-indestructible metal.

I've always viewed the symbol on March's necklace as his family/business insignia (and a stylized anvil besides), so I had to incorporate it into Cheri's new mon. She used to bear her Master's kamon—both as his heir, and to signify her affiliation to him as a surviving servant of the household—but as a part of her new life and beginnings, she made her own mon. It incorporates both symbols related to her Master's mon (the moon and moon halo) and symbols that are her own choosing (cherry blossom) as a way of accepting the coexistence of her past and future, and the fact that her past remains undeniably a part of who she is, despite everything.

Basically, a lot of these are related to hopes for a stronger, lasting relationship, and acceptance of the past's influence while still holding out hope for a better future.

Extras

I'm so glad that I managed to finish this before 1.0 is out! I still want to do a render for March and Cheri but I also needed a break lol. I've been putting off the design for this for so long because I got intimidated and then distracted by many other things. I had to remove several elements because I felt like they muddle the silhouette, and I'm pretty pleased of the cleaner look of the finalized outfit.

🌸 Cheri's v.3.0 Portraits Are Here! 🌸

After approximately 2 months of work, I've finished the first revamped portrait batch for Cheri. This includes their basic seasonal portraits, romanceable character-exclusive portraits (beach and bathhouse), and additional outfits alongside their alt versions. The extra outfits for this batch are:

Their iaido training gear, with tied/untied sleeves;

Loungewear, with warm and cold weather variants that is based off of the nemaki I've drawn Cheri in in certain art (1, 2);

An alt version of their summer outfit (with kimono off);

Shooting Star Festival date outfit, and;

The travelling outfit that they wore in the winter before the story starts (which is part of their Lore Portraits™️; more lore to come!).

This has been a massive labor of love, because not only did I do a ton of extra work for the additional outfits and emotes on top of that, I also fully rendered every single outfit layer for fashion study reasons. Here you can see how every layer of their outfit affects Cheri's silhouette, even if slightly!

The underlayers also work as bases for some of their subsequent outfits, so there's no such thing as wasted effort on my end.

I've come a long way since I did my first ever portraits, so seeing the obvious improvements in both my imitation of the FoM style and my own rendering techniques has been very satisfying. Now I can finally move on to the second set of seasonal outfits and the new extra portraits for wedding and other outfits I've drawn Cheri in 🌸

As a bonus, some slightly more scandalous versions of the loungewear/bathhouse portraits (which are actually not very scandalous considering the new bachelorette, but it is for Cheri's standards) under the cut!

Every month in my friend's art group we do a monthly art challenge. This month's task was to draw our OCs (and Wheedle in my case) in pool tubes for a big summer group picture!
