Kei’s status as an ajin means that he cannot take hormones, as they’ll immediately flush out of his system with each reset. as a reward for placing at the top of his class, his mother promised him the surgery he so desperately desired; the only drawback is that the resulting scars did not disappear after his accident in front of the convenience store. his lanky frame and fairly low voice have always made it easier to pass, but it was only with Kai’s insistence as children that Kei came out openly and, in turn, further alienated himself from his peers. his classmates became more accepting over the years, but his emotional distance from them remained firmly intact.
“Sorry–.. I’m.. embarrassed..”
❛ you should be. ❜ savage. straight for the jugular. ❛ making a spectacle of yourself in public like that... just how stupid are you? ❜
You are at war with yourself. Caught between What you truly are- And what you’re supposed to be.

he’s been on the run for -- two days? three? at this point, he’s lost count, but if the blood on his clothing is any indication, it’s been far longer than he’d like to have gone without a proper shower. when he’d been discovered behind some cafe, he’d initially run away until the young man promise him safety -- but how long that promise would last, or the level of truth behind it, was still unclear. for the time being, he’d enjoy the rest... not to mention a decent meal that didn’t come out of a broken vending machine. ❛ ah ----- i appreciate you not contacting the police. i don’t want to cause you any trouble, so i won’t stay long. i promise. ❜

ajin is the best thing i’ve read since tokyo ghoul
@sitched:
Someone’s fun at parties. She blinks slowly, taking in the full weight of his words, trying to hold in an uncomfortable laugh. ❛ Sounds like you need new friends. I know mine never would. ❜
he’s silent for a moment, pondering her comment and the weight of her certainty. would someone really put that much faith into another human being? they were setting themselves up for failure, counting days until they were inevitably thrown to the wolves ----- and while Kei had, at one time, felt comfortable turning to someone in his time of need, he’d left them behind when he felt he posed too much of a danger to their well-being. no, he reminds himself. when they outlived their usefulness. still, it isn’t an argument he’s keen on continuing. his English is better than most of his former classmates, but still imperfect; going toe-to-toe with a native speaker would practically be suicide. instead, he adopts an uneasy smile and shakes his head, as if dispersing the subject entirely.
❛ haha -- of course. i didn’t mean to be a downer. ❜
@reanimates
“ This is a bar kid. Are you old enough to be here? ”
❛ i’m sixteen. ❜ he assumes that’ll suffice for a reply, coupled with a few deadpan blinks in the cop’s direction. ❛ is that... considered young? ❜
❛ Yeah, wouldn’t want anyone liking you for the real you. ❜ // @reanimates
❛ why are people so obsessed with being liked? it’s not like it really matters in the end. friends can and will turn on each other in a heartbeat. it’s just human nature. ❜
Kei has a tendency to displace blame. initially, he was convinced that his escape led to Kai’s injuries after the bike accident -- “if i hadn’t asked for help, Kai would never have been hurt”. however, he quickly shifted his way of thinking and blamed the passing motorcyclist -- “if he’d never shown up, Kai would never have been hurt.” this trait often makes Kei see himself in a selfless light, justifying actions and choices that potentially involve others’ deaths. it’s not that he sees them as pawns, necessarily -- he’s better than Sato, in that regard -- but more so as liabilities. if they assist him, they know what they’re getting themselves into. that’s what he tells himself. their lives need not weigh upon his shoulders, and yet, they do, though he refuses to come to terms with it. the surgeon’s sacrifice on the rooftop also haunts him, constantly plants a seed of doubt and gnaws at the back of his mind. he tells himself that there was nothing he could’ve done, that it wasn’t his fault that the other man died. somewhere deep inside of him, he hates thinking that a life was lost to preserve an eternal one, especially one belonging to such a seemingly abnormal child. it’s all a means to an end, in his mind. he can’t die, so why are they willing to do so for him? he’ll never say it aloud, but he hopes that putting an end to Sato’s plans will at least partially atone for all the lives that have been lost in the process.

in the brief spans between his various deaths and resurrections, there was no light. no tunnel. no promise of an ethereal existence for those that believed in such things. in his experience ( and he’d had plenty ) there was only darkness, an all-consuming black void that seemed ready to swallow him whole -- but this was different. for once, he wasn’t alone. confusion registers on his features, red eyes staring down the stranger. ❛ -- who are you? why are-- what is this? ❜
@hokkyok-u || starter call.
A CHILD? out of all the things with which Kei’s been greeted, post-revive -- a bloodied truck and armed soldiers, to name a few -- he could safely say that a wide-eyed little boy was the last thing he expected to see. this, of course, complicated matters. assuming this child knew of the existence of the ajin and decided to tattle to his guardians, Kei’s impromptu stay in this small, hole-in-the-wall town would be rather short-lived, and he’d be back on the road with naught an ally nor plan to his name once again. TREAD CAREFULLY, he reminds himself. NOBODY’S HARMLESS. ❛ uh... i’m sorry you had to see that. but don’t worry; i’m okay. i’m not hurt. see? ❜
A SMALL NOTE. Kei is absolutely able to form relationships with everyone’s characters. however, he’s notorious for seeing people around him as a means to an end, then tossing them aside ( or, in some cases, disposing of them ) when they offer no more worth. long story short, if you plan on writing with Kei, consider this a forewarning -- he’s probably using you.
hope u get run over
Hoping is all well and good, but ultimately, it gets you nowhere. Be the change you wish to see in the world. Get in your car and run me the fuck down instead of waiting for others to do your work for you, you coward. You lazy fool.
