A transgender Refugee's Story from Gorom Camp My name is birasa and I am a queer refugee living in Gorom Refugee Camp in South Sudan. Life in the camp is very difficult. Every day, I struggle to access basic needs such as food, clean water, healthcare, and safe shelter. As an LGBTQ+ person, I face additional challenges, including discrimination, isolation, and fear for my safety. Despite these hardships, I continue to hope for a better future for myself and others in my community. As a community leader, I do my best to support fellow LGBTQ+ refugees who are also facing hardship. Together, we try to create a safe and supportive environment, but our resources are very limited. We need help to meet our basic needs and build a safer future. Any support, whether through donations, sharing our story, or raising awareness, can make a meaningful difference in our lives. Thank you for standing with us and giving us hope. ❤️ https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-lgbtiq-refugees-in-gorom-camp-south-sudan
Thank you for your kindness and for taking the time to respond. I understand that opportunities for resettlement are very limited. Here, I live in a small space with other transgender refugees, and we do our best to support one another.
Some Canadian groups are helping a few refugees relocate, but the number of people they can assist is very small. For now, I continue to wait and hope for an opportunity in the future.
In the meantime, my biggest challenge is meeting basic needs such as food and shelter so that I can remain in a place where I feel safer and face less risk of persecution. Any support, sharing of my story, or assistance would mean a great deal to me.
Thank you again for your compassion and support.
