The beginning of setting up my online shop selling stickers and prints, I’d like to move onto fabric printing for clothes and bag sales and maybe one day a zine publication.

Starting small I’m focusing on 5 products, 3 sticker sheets, and two prints. Conceptual playful works of pop culture, fashion and nostalgia.

Fabric printing and painting. Saw this red tartan skirt in a vintage store and instantly thought of bright apple green fabric paint I’d seen in the art shop the day before. I created an ignorant chain lino cut I’d previously designed in my sketchbook and gave it a go on this skirt. Love the clashing colours and the blue really makes it pop.

I used the Lino cut more as a stencil and filled in/ detailed with a small paint brush. I used black acrylic as a base to make sure the green was really opaque, and stood out against the existing pattern.

This has inspired me to design more lino print designs such as chain charms and keys. Excited to test these out in more colours!

Printing clothes. I made a new Lino cut, ignorant style safety pins. Lino allows for an easy re-usable stamp where I can make stylistic choices to show the imperfections of the cuts.

I bought a pink glittery fabric paint, the viscosity was ideal for printing. I had experimented with a fabric medium mixing with acrylic paints, I found using a lower ratio of the medium mixer was easier to print with as a thicker paint allowed for a better print. I did however mix the fabric paint with white acrylic to show better on the black fabric, but I did lose the sparkle in the paint.

These are still experiments but they are washing well, and I’m happy with these recent outcomes.

It’s been a hot minute since I drew something. Life has been very busy and getting me down, I just wanted to throw myself back into sticker making as it’s all I have access to right now.

I made this illustration from a sculpture I made while at university. Now I’ve graduated I’m trying to look for somewhere to live and try and change my current job. Despite all the stresses all I want to get back to is my art.

ok this is “earring magic ken” who was introduced in 1992 (and discontinued shortly thereafter)

basically mattel had done a survey and discovered that girls didn’t think ken was “cool” enough

SO someone had the bright idea to research coolness by sending people to raves which, at the time, were mostly hosted & attended by gay men. so they went to these raves and took notes on what the fashions were and finally landed on this outfit, mesh shirt & all 

this doll became the best selling ken doll in history, mostly because gay men bought it in droves. (many of them said his necklace was supposed to be a cockring) but mattel and a number of parents weren’t very amused and discontinued the doll

MAGIC EARRING KEN. This bitch gay as HELL. supposedly the aforementioned rings on him are for “magic earrings” and clip on charms. These charms are advertised as totally COMPLETELY heterosexual, not gay at ALL, see there’s a Barbie that also has Magic Earring Action with clip on charms! Ken wears them to match, because he’s STRAIGHT

Here’s the issue: THERE IS NO MATCHING BARBIE. Magic Earring Ken is out here straight up wearing cock rings on his jacket with a thinly devised advertising ploy to make it SEEM not-gay. But it’s DEFINITELY GAY. (And if you’re thinking, why cock rings? Well way back in 1992 gay culture was HUGE on wearing cock rings, it was the in-style. Everyone who was gay wore one, even women; you sewed them to your leather jacket, and the placement indicated some of your sexual preference. In case you were wondering, Ken is a Bottom.)

AND IT GETS BETTER. Magic Earring Ken was on the shelves for six weeks before they pulled him. In that short amount of time? Magic Earring Ken became the BEST SELLING Barbie Doll Mattel has EVER SOLD. LET THAT SINK IN. SIX WEEKS. And now every time these wheezy old hetero windbag execs go to look at their sales board, they’re forever haunted by Magic Earring Ken at the top of their charts.

Sticker sheet progress, I’d like to aim to do three more for this mini project I've set myself. My test sticker of the “Rat Swing” came out great, I'm happy to keep using Sticker App for my printing. 

Working towards my goal of having an online art shop, it’s great to know I can always have fun making stickers. For my next sticker sheet I'd like to do something really playful and nostalgic.

Aiming to do a sticker a day. I’m making a sticker pack of my kind friends who helped and modelled for me when doing my uni photography projects. Now I've finished it’s nice to work on something for myself and which is fun, and I can share the enjoyment with the people around me. I'm successfully working and keeping visually productive to keep up the momentum of creating art.

Today we have my friend Saul, this sticker design fits with my rat stuff but was his halloween costume of “Ray Charles as a rat”.
