The project is an exploration of the relationship between geometric and organic forms – transparent and opaque. Indefinite melting materia interacts with definite angular forms and gravity determines the relationship in between.
Indefinite Vases are sculptures or containers. Functional or decorative. The contrast between the cut stone and the form of the hand blown glass emphasizes the relation between space and object, an interplay between a fragile material and its solid counterpart.

Jeroen van der Gruiter is interested in how the perception of colour has everything to do with the way a surface catches the light, which changes throughout the day. In ‘The Passage of light’ he uses colour gradients to suggest architectonic structures, and fillings to emphasize shape. The series of semi-transparent glass vessels shift in hue, revealing their inner secrets as time goes by.

Abide Vessels
These vessels for an ambiguous, imagined ceremony take their cues from the strong symmetry found in religious visual language. An inexplicable, colliding, brutalist element breaks this image. Familiar yet unfamiliar, they intend to intrigue, urging the beholder to wonder and imagine about their story and purpose. The crisp, synthetic material that is in parts oxidised, - appearing aged - raises further ambiguity about where these relics fit in time.
While at first the handles seem unclear, once considered, they provide clues on how to use the object. Forcing the lid to be lifted in a specific way, they make the user perform a ceremonial action. The ancient bible instruction to not eat animals with cloven hooves, served the purpose of avoiding unclean meat. In the same way, the glossy areas give a clue on what to touch, guiding away from the delicate patinated surface.
Created for the Dutch Invertuals group exhibition, 'Advanced Relics' which showed in Milan in April 2016.
