casual reminder: DO NOT mouth off to an entity that’s stronger than you if you’re not prepared for the consequences. some of these characters would not think twice about killing or seriously wounding your character. these characters have power and have every reason to use said power. you want to play that game? please do! BUT ONLY IF you understand the implications of doing so. DO NOT force me to go out of character simply because you cannot handle the idea of your muse getting hurt. but to expect your character to mouth off / insult / whatever to one that significantly stronger or more powerful than yours and walk away unscathed is unrealistic and unfair.

The Complications of Dark Subject Matters

Delving into heavy subject matters can be a tricky thing.

I’ve seen plenty of people defending the artistic portrayal of the heinous actions of domestic violence, rape, and manipulation of both physical, mental and emotional kind. Of non-consensual and abusive subjects of all kinds. And to a degree, yes, I do believe that portraying something horrible through media should be allowed — so long as you portray it as it rightfully is; horrible, disgusting, and something to stand against. It isn’t entirely negative in its intentions, especially if it’s a means to branch out to those who suffered from such abuse, and to open the eyes of those who’ve never seen or experienced such trauma.

But sometimes, delving into those situations can have an opposite effect. It can sometimes be romanticized or fetishized by an impressionable audience, especially if they’re younger, leading them to believe that such abnormal behavior is actually quite normal and even idealized. We’ve seen it happen all the time in fandoms, unfortunately, especially if the abusive character in question is attractive. Which is a disservice to not only the many brave individuals that these things happened to, but also to the understanding of the current and next generation. We become increasingly apathetic to the plight of victims and survivors of these everyday tragedies and ignore the people who grow increasingly uncomfortable of seeing monsters of their past in fandoms and works that were meant to take them away from those memories. All while propping these monsters up upon and faultless pedestal.

I’ve seen it. We’ve seen it.

So, while people have the right to explore the darker side of life, we cannot ignore the people who’ve seen that darkness and become concerned when they see its portrayal veering on romanization and glorification. Because maybe it’s unintentional, and that unintentional action can have unintentional and rippling effects.

But just be aware of this. Just be careful. Don’t shoot down the concerns of others who see what you see differently. And let your audience know that these subject matters are never okay, and to separate fiction from reality.

Because it’s not that hard to blur the lines.
