Batten Sportswear by Shinya Hasegawa. Convertible tote/backpack. I've really been into the products of Batten Sportswear for the last two seasons. This bag is a great example of the kind of smart, versatile thinking that goes into the line. Bought at Extra.
Ordered this great pair of shoes by Hiroshi Tsubouchi from Swedish retailer Tres Bièn Shop. Wasn't familiar with his line before, but the color, the soles, everything amazing. I don't rightly know if they'll ever make an appearance outside of the shoe museum, but I have worn them once, in my apartment, and took them off again before they got dirty.
Stopped by Nepenthes just to check in as I was having lunch nearby, and came across their pop-up store for the Japanese brand Monrõ. This scarf drew me in immediately with its geometric design. I found the pattern reminiscent of the American South West and Himalayan Buddhist mandalas, a compelling, and comfortable combination.Â
I tell people that I bought an iPad to put my portfolio on because I was tired of carrying the full-sized print version, but that was only partially true. The biggest reason was because I wanted this great leather sleeve from Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair.

Inventory Magazine
I used to hesitate before ordering from stores in other countries. Would the t-shirt and stickers for that obscure band actually show up two to three weeks after I mailed my cashier's check off to the London address with the strange numbers at the bottom? Was it worth the hassle of doing an international wire transfer for that off white, painted leather messenger bag? Now click, click, click, and it's done and on its way. Items ordered from Inventory Magazine in Vancouver:
Tools vol. 1, A great, visual guide to all kinds simple and well-made tools, workwear, gear and objects. Volume two was not quite as good.
Plant Journal, now The Plant, A magazine featuring the thoughts, musings on and images of plants that fascinate and inspire creative people. In all honesty I only skimmed it.
Truck Work, The book/catalog from Truck, a furniture design company in Osaka. To me it was similar, but inferior to Pacific Furniture Service.
A bandana from The Real McCoy’s, Love this Japanese brand's take on traditional Americana.
Post O’alls, Japanese designed, American made workwear. I got their classic Engineer’s Jacket and was a bit surprised at how perfectly it fit. I lived in it last Spring.

To Live and Buy in LA (apologies)
LA is one of my favorite cities to visit whenever I get the chance. I have a number of friends that have moved out there, and the food and shopping are great. Twice now, I've made the SLS in Beverly Hills my base of operations and headed out on foot for (relatively) nearby shops. Walking everywhere seemed to earn me a number of strange looks, but I enjoyed seeing more of the area as a pedestrian. That said, showing up sweaty and out of breath at my destinations probably did not do much to impress the store owners I met.
Some great places I stopped in at include: RTH, Creatures of Comfort, OK and Mister Freedom. My three favorite places were South Willard, Standard Goods and Heath Ceramics. The only place I found disappointing was Fred Segal-pretentious and overpriced.
