It's a David Waterman themed blog, I talk about him a lot.
/!\ My character interpretations are pretty obscure, my headcanons represent only my point of view. And I can go far in my interpretations.

Shelly is a reference to the shells (and it fits well with the personality I imagined for her)
Marine is a reference to...everything marine. My first idea was to name her "Marina" but I changed to "Marine" (I changed 1 letter !)
Helga, I already talked about her, it's a reference to algae.
Unfortunately for the glasses girl I didn't find a good name. My first idea was to name her River but it's not a marine pun but a freshwater pun orz...

Disclaimer: I think you already know them so I don't think it's useful to write it again
Note: exceptionally, the word “football” will be replaced by “soccer”.
Personality
I see David as an athletic, hard working boy. He performs well at school, I see him as the student who everyone asks him to help them with their homework.
Despite being an intelligent person, he is also quite dizzy and can get carried away with his ideas. Unfortunately it’s this side of his personality which is the most visible, so it leads him to being not taken seriously by his teammates.
He likes trying new things and doesn’t mind getting out his comfort zone. This idea has even became a sort of joke with David trying any activity which could exist, leading to some absurd and improbable situations.
I don’t see him as the most confident being, there are moments where he comparing himself to others, wondering if he’s as “worthy” as them. And he has a pretty inconsistent self-esteem which can be high but also can suddenly fall very low on the slightest failure.
Relations
I see well getting along with the main midfielders especially with Surf (for the “athletic” side) and Matt (for the “hard working” side)
By the way I like to call the duo between Surfin’ and David: played soccer on a whim (I wont elaborate more) I developed more about their relationship but I will talk about it in another post. I have an anecdote : Way before I had an interest for these two I liked to imagine them together. (Was that a sign I will have an interest for them later ?)
He also get along with some reserves such as Bruce for “reasons” (←I don’t really want to go into details...) and Daniel whom he greatly encourages him in his dream and they both seems to share an interest for trains (it doesn’t comes out of nowhere I swear !!!)
explaination: Daniel has Mad express, a train related hissatsu (and very few players have that technique). And when you recruit David you find him in the model shop and in this shop you can find model of trains and…Actually David was in the car section…But I assume it’s just default spot and David may collect models of trains.
He also get along with Holly for unknown reasons. (this idea is based on a thought which came from nowhere, where I imagined them interacting together and it was rather cute.) I would say that the charm of this pairing is that it’s a pretty improbable pair.
Despite David’s peculiar personality, Holly doesn’t seems bothered by him. He even finds him amusing.
David the footy boy (I added a little thing)
I think that even if David chose to switch to soccer, aussie rules means a lot to him. I see him as an immense AFL* fan. He tries not to miss any game on the TV, he has merch of his favourite team, he taking himself in photo with his favourite players…

Unfortunately none of his teammates is interested by this sport, they even avoid to talk about this subject with him because they know at the moment where he begins to talk about it, he wouldn’t stop talking about it. So he talks generally about this topic with his friends from his footy team or on internet forums (or twitter).
David stopped footy by frustration, he noticed these times, his weakness are often pointed on. Even if he tries to ameliorate himself there is no real changes. When he couldn’t bear the all the remarks he answers to all of that : “If I’m that bad at footy, it’s better I quit it !”. Then he wonders : “why do I lose all my energy in that sport nobody knows ?” and it’s at this moment he decides to do soccer, it’s easy to get into it and everybody knows this sport.
Because he has started to practice soccer way later than others, he was pessimist to the idea being selected for the national team. Realising that he has been accepted as a main defender, he had a sudden confidence boost, thinking that finally he could maybe make it.
Having high hopes to win the qualifications, the defeat against Inazuma Japan has been very painful for David, thinking that he has abandoned his former teammates for a superficial reason.
This feeling of guilt leads him to not interact with them during a certain time, thinking they won’t forgive him. (Even if actually, they find that he played well during that match and they hope to see him back.)
This has been a great moment of reconsideration on his past decisions. After this moment, he will take a step back and be more serious and overall different from his past self, while keeping a certain insouciance he always had. I think he will say to himself that from now “he will stop being an idiot” and go forward. I imagine that he would be hard on himself.
After having written that, I can’t see this frame in the same way….
Even if he likes soccer, post FFI he would return to Aussie rules football. Because despite all he really likes footy and he want to see his teammates again.
He is aware that he won’t be an international celebrity, but he has stopped to caring about this kind of details and he will focus on what it’s important.
Additions
-Before being selected, he was a self-taught soccer player.
-He likes ice skating (reference to the fact that Ice ground is one of his hissatsu).
-Because Southern Cross is one of his hissatsu, I want to believe that he likes stargazing and he has knowledge in astronomy, I really want to believe it because it’s an occupation which fits him well !
-He likes collecting models (reference to the fact of when you recruit him you find him in the model shop.)
-I have a joke where David is actually a secret agent. He hadn’t rejoined the BW to participate to the tournament but for another reason…
-When David is serious, he’s serious !
-Nice reminds him of a close friend of him who is the captain of his footy team. So it was for that reason David easily became friends with him.
Actually there are some players who remind him of his former teammates.
-He doesn’t like rugby players due to bad experiences he had with some. And doing rugby is a no for him.
hopefully there is no known rugby players in the team...
I made a discovery ! The voicelines of many characters are the voicelines you can assign to the custom characters according to their personality ! So it would mean :
David has the "compassionate" voice
Surfin has the "audacious" voice
Bruce (and Sully too) has the "fool" voice
Clark has the "sarcastic" voice
Quincy has the "sophisticated" voice
It was the only characters where I recongnised the voice
Anyway I consider these voicelines as belonging to them first and foremost (yes, in this cast of thousands of characters). It's just these voices fits them so well ! (except Surf...)
Drawing landscapes is intimidating but the process of drawing this subject is satisfying to see. I don't feel that same satisfaction when I'm drawing characters.
I continue my tradition to make a little doodle to illustrate the post.
Clark is a character who has somewhat intrigued me with his pretentious particular nickname and his rebel-ish looks. I think he may have a personality who kinda “stands out” (?), so I find he has the potential to be a pretty amusing character.
I already developed things about him way before.
Disclaimer : I (still) have shit writing skills, they may be incoherences or unclear stuff I may editing this post to correct some mistakes. And of course like all the posts I publish, this represent only my point of view.
Personality
I depict him having a strong personality, he’s somebody who directly acts when there is a problem and who is not afraid saying what he thinks.
I find he’s the embodiment of the boy in his rebellion phase who is deep down a little bit lost without admit it. He takes very care of his image and refuses to do (publicly) things who could make him look bad.
He may be abrupt at times, but he’s not a bad guy either, he can be more sympathetic. His roughness never comes out of nowhere and is always justified.
I like to think that before middle school he was absolutely nothing of that he was even…the exact opposite. Adolescence is the period where people want to change…
A boy close to nature
I represent as somebody who is pretty attached to his land. He’s proud of the great biodiversity of his small state and that’s why he actively contribute to conserving it. Especially regarding the wildlife, because the native animals are the biggest pride of his country and they are so cool and unique ! And when was a child he had a special bond with them (if I could say shortly it's them who gave more confidence to Clark)
He’s frustrated that many species disappeared so he doesn’t want letting that happening to the currently endangered species.
He also wants to discover the wilderness of the mainland and see places he could never see in his home state.
Relations
I depict him generally with the medium-height fellows of the team whom he gets along pretty well
But he gets along particularly well with Reef (we see playing beach volley together and in the game, during FFI opening ceremony we could see their sprites next to each other. They look like total opposites but they have similar interests. It must be something between these two…) Also my absolutely favourite pairing in this team is Reef/Clark
They knew each other several years ago so they were already familiar to each other.
By the way Clark was frustrated that when they met again at the FFI they wasn’t as close than he expected. It leads him to be jealous of “some players” (I wont say who :) something something “I knew him before you all !” something…
Clark consider Reef as somebody important and when he’s with him he (unconsciously) quits his “Kraken” persona and acts in a more normal way.
And I like depict him with Holly due to the fact that I characterise them in a similar way (but they have their oppositions too). They are bound by being both rebels and…liking money ??? (btw I don’t know if anyone knows what kind of logic I used to come to this conclusion)
Besides them, he also get along well with Shine, I think they share the same way of thinking ←interpret as you want.
And I see Clark highly admiring and respecting Karmei. Conserving the cultural heritage of the country is as important as conserving the native wildlife.
Additions
-It sound cliché but I really want to say to it ! He absolutely hates being cute but he secretly likes cute things.
-He likes hiking
-One of his biggest talents it’s economising ! If he can spend less, he spend less ! the fact he has “Economy” talent in the game gave me the idea he may be form a low-income background so he must be wary with spending. Even if at same time I think that some players have this talent just to make their stats more interesting.
-He doesn't like being seen hair down. Even if he is complimented when he’s like that, he finds it softens him too much. He’s often considered as unrecognisable like that (and he’s really unrecognisable !)
Apparently, he stays hair down when he’s at home (because nobody will see him so why bother) or when he want to do “some things” but he doesn’t want to be recognised by somebody.
Originally I wanted to redo these drawing but I feared it would look worse than before so I put the same drawings
The way the character are placed are a reference to the placement of the states/territory ^^
The palette colour used is the state colour. Are they official ? Well for SA, QLD, I saw a page about their state colours and for NT I could say I'm based on its flag colours.
But for the rest where I didn't found an official article about this I'm based myself on colours used in sporting teams and see what palettes are more commonly used to represent each state.
Even if that project (where I'm not sure on if I finish it or not) is based on my hometown headcanons I want to make these drawings enjoyable for everyone. I made sure in the main attributes of each state there is something which could match with the description of the characters shown.
For QLD Surfin I will bring a little justification to the choice : I could say he represent well with his vivid appearance the "main holiday destination" side of this state.
I re-upload (again...sorry for the redundancy) that post because their hometown it’s something I will often do reference in my works.
You probably guessed it but deep down the reason for why they live in such different places is…Because I want to find a beautiful place where I could draw them in !!!! I put well known places because I want to be easier for to find documentation.
I feared at first the fact they lives in very different places to be too strange then I watched Australian Idol. I saw there are candidates from everywhere, even from remote places going in one place to be the next Australian Idol even if there is a risk they don't pass the audition. (sorry for the digression)
But I hope these choices makes sense and aren’t too troubling.
Northern Territory :
Karmei Kohler : Darwin (?)
I put a question mark in Darwin because I hesitate if I make him from the capital city or in more rural place
He’s the only one where I’m really not sure about the hometown, but I keep the idea he’s from NT, it’s a territory which fits him pretty well.
-Western Australia :
Quincy Horst : Kalgoorlie
Popular gold mining town and I love the architecture there.
Bruce Marlin : Perth
He looks good in Perth, I can’t explain why but he looks good in Perth.
(I did researches and all but I can’t explain)
-South Australia :
Sully Princeton : Coober Pedy
it’s a pretty well known mining town with a particular landscape.
He lives underground, something which surprise his teammates.
Daniel Barrack : somewhere close to Adelaide, I would say maybe in Adelaide Hills region.
I wanted to do reference to the fact that South Australia is a great agricultural region. Well there is agriculture everywhere but it’s especially known in South Australia. And the colours of that state (dark blue, red, yellow) suits him so well ! (yes)
-Victoria :
Matt Angle : Lorne (him being from Gippsland region could also fit but I wanted to talk about the Great Ocean Road)
I visualise him being from a regional place, fishing seems to be a popular activity. Plus with the fact he has tsunami boost imply he knows how to surf, so he must probably surf there too
I also said he could be from Gippsland, because this region is known for its fishing towns, but it’s merely an idea, I prefer visualise him in the Surf Coast.
I find he represent well the regional side of that state in general
David Waterman : Melbourne
The footy boy lives in the footy city.
-Tasmania :
Clark Cain : Hobart
I love associating him with Tasmania for many reasons (but I won’t cite them all because some could be considered as far-fetched). I always visualised him being from a place which is urbanised yet close to nature and I find that Hobart is the ideal place.
Additionally he lives in a state which is sometimes forgotten in maps, therefore its existence is forgotten, therefore like the Kraken, Tasmania isn’t real.
-New South Wales (regional):
Clive Scissors : somewhere in the New England region and not very far from Tamworth
Due to his element “mountain” I assumed he may be from a mountainous area and in NSW there are hilly areas. He’s from the north rather than south because if I could visualise being from a neighbouring state I will picture him more being from QLD than VIC .
Not gonna lie I’m very attached to the idea that Clive is from the countryside because I genuinely can’t visualise him being from the city.
Shine Beach : Byron Bay
I assumed that he would be from a pretty touristy town so I chose Byron Bay.
He likes the pretty landscapes of that town but he really doesn’t like when there are too much tourists.
however the situation wasn’t as though at his time compared to now
-City of Sydney :(the most important players are in the most important city, I guess)

To be on the ocean theme, they would live in a neighbourhood close to the sea, in the eastern suburbs
I thought they may frequent the same school.
-Queensland :
Surf Wyndhas : Gold Coast
The very present Surf culture there (well there is also other reasons but it’s primarily for that)
Holly Summers : Brisbane
I see him being from a very urbanised city and because his description states it’s pretty sweaty where he lives I chose Brisbane because it’s very urbanised and it’s known for its high temperatures (it doesn’t gets really cold in Brisbane)
Reef Hamilton : Cairns (I hesitate between saying he lived in Cairns when he was younger but moved to Sydney few years ago or saying he always lived in Cairns) ←I still hesitate
I have chose Cairns because it’s the famous gateway to The Great Barrier Reef but the main reason it's me wanting to find a pretext to talk about north QLD
