I wanna add that “Likes do nothing but make artists upset” is meant very literally. Likes are not how this website functions OR how we do things here. No one can see your likes and the dash does not show you people’s likes, only what they’ve posted or reblogged. You CAN set your likes to visible and then people CAN go on your blog and look at them, but those are extra steps and it’s not how content is meant to circulate on this site. What you’re meant to do is 1) follow people and then 2) reblog stuff to 3) populate the dash of the people who follow you. It’s a give and take, and if you don’t reblog things and also don’t make posts of your own, you are a dead-end for content and the social aspect of this so-called social media website. If you don’t reblog and/or post things, people have no reason to follow you, and thus no one will engage with you. Even worse, people might think you’re a bot and block you.
I get the impulse to lurk, I do that the majority of time I’m here on tumblr. But lurking on tumblr works differently than on twitter: you quick reblog. Just reblog without adding comments or tags, takes the same amount of energy to hit the like button and is infintely more valuable. Reblogging on here is the equivalent of Twitter likes, not the equivalent of a retweet; that would be adding a comment on the post itself or in the tags. Likes here are for bookmarking or showing sympathy on a personal post that’s not for reblogging.
I also understand the embarrassment of showing people what content you engage with, but that’s the mortifying ideal of being known, babes. If you’re not willing to engage with other people at the minimum requirement of engagement according to how the website works, why are you on this website?
Or… can we just let people use a site how they want in what ever fashion they want and with out this need to conform to the way You/Ya’ll do things. Just let people live.
