Non binary does not equal vaguely masculine

More accurately, nonbinary does not automatically mean white, thin, flat-chested and completely “androgynous”. 

Nonbinary people don’t have a “look” because we can literally have any appearance. You might meet the most feminine person you’ve ever encounter in your whole life, and they could still be nonbinary.

I struggle with this shit all the time because, by society’s standards, my body is very female-presenting and it sickens me how most people wouldn’t even consider me as nonbinary.

If you’re nonbinary and you don’t fit the “standard” of thin/white/androgynous, you’re so so valid and I sincerely look up to you for being so unapologetically you. Keep your head high, and don’t let anyone try to bring down your own self worth.

here’s a reminder that if you aren’t eating properly, you aren’t thinking properly. you won’t be able to control your intrusive thoughts. your emotions will overtake you. you won’t be able to verbalize how you feel, which will frustrate you even more. until you’re nourished and healthy again, your illness will continue to take hold. the only way out is to eat.

if any of my followers are interested in science, there’s actually a biological reason this happens. when the body is under attack (extreme stress, malnutrition, etc), higher function thinking (prefrontal cortex of the brain) doesn’t work as efficiently. this means that you’re not able to make smart decisions, your judgement is distorted, you can’t regulate emotions, and you won’t be able to process new information as well

instead, all your higher function thinking is sent to your midbrain. the amygdala (the part of your brain that produces strong emotions, including fight/flight) will manage your feelings, rather than the prefrontal cortex. this means you’re more likely to react strongly to triggers, and potentially in a dangerous way. your striatum, responsible for muscle memory and habitual action, is also handling functions it shouldn’t. when triggered, instead of using your skills to move forward in a healthy way, it’s much more likely that you’ll revert to old habits

the ONLY way to redirect thinking back to the prefrontal cortex is to break the cycle. it’s easier not to eat, or engage in other behaviors, but until you can regulate your intake, this pattern will continue

Yo I had the wildest night I just I can’t even

Okay I guess it wasn’t that wild but basically this guy was hitting on me at a club and would not back off at all, I kept smiling and saying no thanks because he looked crazy and I was scared if I was any more assertive I’d be murdered, and then my ex came up and started talking to me super casually so as to not cause any problems but still help me out, then the dude has the audacity to try to push him and say “Excuse me, I was talking to her” and at that point Kev (the ex) said “I’m pretty sure she said no thanks” and so the dude says “Well I’m pretty sure she’s a grown woman who can make her own decisions so how about you back off” and Kev laughs and starts ushering me away, but then the guy says “if you keep talking to her I’m gonna fucking kill you man” and before Kevin could even turn to the guy, our friend comes up and says “WHAT DID YOU SAY” and then the creepy dude PUNCHES HIM and so they start fighting and Kevin joins in and I’m just standing there and then the bouncer (is that what they’re called?) pulls everyone apart and the dude’s face is like destroyed and bloody and ugh just so gross

Like is this even real? I thought this stuff was only in the movies, it was literally my first time ever at a club and of course this kind of stuff always happens to me

A ton more shit happened too like our designated driver got so pumped from a song that he unbuckled, let go of the steering wheel, and put his whole body outside of the window while singing??? YOU’RE THE MOST SOBER PERSON IN THIS CAR WAT U DOIN

And the DD also asked me out like four times and when I said no he asked my ex for permission? As if he has the final say or some shit? And the whole rest of the night he kept explaining to me all these great qualities he has while putting down my ex, saying stuff like “I’m such a great guy, and you know Kevin’s kinda eh, I’m really trust worthy, and I’m looking for a long term relationship, Kevin isn’t the commitment kind of guy, you want someone who you can count on, who can take care of you, I’m so dependable” because talking shit about my ex who’s my bestest friend on the planet is totally the way to my heart right

Bottom line I guess is military men will either get in bar fights to protect you or be relentlessly misogynistic and there’s no inbetween ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

in therapy my therapist and i were talking about my own feelings of self worth in relationships. and she asked me to say qualities about myself that someone else would be attracted to, on a romantic and platonic level. so i named some things like compassionate, empathetic, etc. and she said “you named things that you can give someone. ways you can serve, rather than ways that you are” and y'all..my mind was blown that’s gonna stick with me forever like she then proceed to tell me actual innate qualities about myself that she liked and thought anyone else would like as well and i hadn’t even considered those because like she said i was focused on things i could do outwardly to attract and maintain connections rather than who i was as a person..goddamn!!! thats tea!!!

With this in mind, this also makes me think of the ways people describe us. When people say the reasons that they love/like you or describe you as a person, are they only naming ways that you serve them? Are they equating your worth with how much you do for them?

ex. “You’re such a good listener. You’re so generous, you’re so compassionate. You’re always there for me. You always hold me down. You’re reliable”

vs.

“You’re so funny! You’re very vibrant. You’re creative, passionate, and intelligent. You’re optimistic. You’re so talented at ____” , etc. I think that’s very telling.

Self-Talk to Help End Obsessions

That thought isn’t helpful right now.

Now is not the time to think about it. I can think about it later.

This is irrational. I’m going to let it go.

I won’t argue with an irrational thought.

This is not an emergency. I can slow down and think clearly about what I need.

This feels threatening and urgent, but it really isn’t.

I don’t have to be perfect to be OK.

I don’t have to figure out this question. The best thing to do is just drop it.

It’s OK to make mistakes.

I already know from my past experiences that these fears are irrational.

I have to take risks in order to be free. I’m willing to take this risk.

It’s OK that I just had that thought/image, and it doesn’t mean anything. I don’t have to pay attention to it.

I’m ready to move on now.

I can handle being wrong.

I don’t have to suffer like this. I deserve to feel comfortable.

That’s not my responsibility.

That’s not my problem.

I’ve done the best I can.

It’s good practice to let go of this worry. I want to practice.
